I loved those old country stores and you are right they were more than a place to buy things . When I was three months old I had a high fever daddy wasn't home mom needed to take me to the Dr she didn't have enough gas or money to get any . She stopped at the country store told Mr Frank what was going on he came out filled the car .one of the men who was setting around heard her went and told the others and they took up a collection for her ao she wouldn't go off with out any money . I miss the days where people looked out for each other

I remember when I was bout 7 , daddy worked in to..baccor , this was back when u strung it up in the barns. He would on Saturdays let me go with him and I hung out the ole barn picking up tobacco leaves when they fell n the dirt, and dinner time they all load up go this old white country store,it had double screen doors on front, wooden floors inside and my favorite thing get was them push up ice creams lol.. sherbet kind. But like few has said here, they have that thick sliced bologna..it tasted way better than grocery store kind. There would be a big ole wood stove sitting in middle room, several chairs and even had couch up against the wall lol..men sitting round talkin bout every time u go in there. Great memories of those days.. hope u have a beautiful Friday night n God bless y'all.. nice seeing another video from u.. and listening..

I really love it when you take a break from the haint stories. Another thing I really love about your channel is that you always show ethnic diversity in Appalachia, while most Appalachian channels do not . This really sets your channel apart from the other channels in your genre . I know Donnie Laws is good about that too and I appreciate him doing that as well. Please never stop doing that . This story brought back wonderful childhood memories of the 1960s, Jared. I grew up being shuttled between where I lived in the Appalachian foothills and Atlanta, GA where my mother grew up. The big city stores loved by my mother were cool and full of amazing things to a child but I honestly preferred the little Mom n' Pop store I could walk or ride my bike to! Sometimes, we even rode the horses there! They had a hitching rail for us. I knew the owners and they were were kind and liked me because I was a polite child. But my biggest fun (and funny story) was the first time I went to the oldest store in the area. I had seen the P&W store driving by with my parents but we never went there. It was ten miles away and wasn't fancy enough for my mother. Then one day at the barn, the owner told me and his daughter and son "Y'all load on up'n the truck, I'm gone to the general." His kids climbed in quickly, shouting with delight! I got in too, but I wondered what the general was? A person? A thing? Turns out it was the P&W! The store had gotten its start in 1923 making it the oldest store in a twenty mile radius and the only store there at all for its first fifty years! It was originally the Pearson & Williamson General Store. Mr. Pearson bought his partner out as he grew too old to work and it became the P&W, but all the old families called it 'the general' because the old name was so long! It had everything from old fashioned candy jars full of candy to hand cut meats and even wood and hardware. They sold new chicks every spring! Locals would sell their vegetables there in the spring and summer too. Even my mother grew fond of it as its fresh meats and veggies were hard to beat! It was my older brother's first job.
The country town I grew up in has been officially claimed by Atlanta now even though the area is still called Vinings. The P&W as well as my other old store are gone, as is my horse's old pasture and my house. Subdivisions and high-dollar stores are all that's there now. My childhood town now only exists in my memories, but it's still very real in my head and missed by me. ❤❤❤
Thanks for the cool story, kinfolk! Y'all take care now! May God bless you and yours. 😊

Right up to the second Grandma took her last breath on this Earth she called going to the grocery store, 5 & 10, etc as "trading". Those two weeks every summer when I was a kid, our first full day in Rockwood, about an hour or so after we had gone to Grandma and Grandpa's house to eat her good old home made breakfast of biscuits, bacon, grits and cream gravy, Grandma would look at my Dad and say, "Ron, I was wondering here after a bit if you would carry me/ride me to go trade. If'n you don't mind." ❤ Grandma wouldn't let anyone, not my Aunt's or Uncle's take her to trade whenever were there. She adored my Dad and no one else would do. I can't count the times one of Uncle's would chime in and say, "Mama, I asked you just yesterday if you wanted to go trade and you said 'No thank you.'" With her 4'9" self, my Grandma would put on her green eyed glare, left eyebrow raised (that's hereditary by the way 😁), that glare would've scared a full grown man to death if they didn't know her, and would say,
"Don't you sass me. I need to go trade today and want Ron to take me." 🤨 That is where the conversation always ended. Over the years, I have had to explain to friends and so on not from the South what take someone to trade, they are exchanging money or goods for groceries, staples, things they need at home. My Grandpa used to have bee hives and fished a lot when he wasn't working. He'd trade honey and fish for other goods or services. Jim and I have talked several times about how life will be when, or if, the worldwide grid crashes and can't be rebooted. Regular US Currency will become nothing more than fancier printed Monopoly money; it won't be worth the paper it's printed on or the metal coins are stamped from unless those coins are at least 97% pure silver. I told him we're blessed because with the 20 + years I worked in the medical field, the knowledge I gained from all of it plus my medicinal and herbal plant knowledge, passed down to me as well as learned, I would be able to trade seeing and treating sick folks for goods because of it. Two of the PA's I used to work with even taught me how to tie sutures. I already knew how to splint, cast, clean wounds and a lot of other stuff. Doctors and pharmacists learn a bit about plant pharmacology when they're in college, but unless they already had an existing desire to learn about medicinal plants, etc., they will be limited on what they know of it. I still have all my medical books from going to school back in the late 1980's as well as my gardening books. I still prefer to read from the pages of a book and not on a tablet; books don't crash and every refern note you made on paper, or in my case, in the margins of the pages, will still be right there for me to look stuff up.
Generally speaking, from the generation that are the Millennials on down, y'all were raised on digital technology from the time it exploded with cell phones and onward. Some of the younger generations have been blessed because their folks and elders also taught them not to rely solely on all things digital and technological.
I count my own kids, a 42 year old daughter, 39 year old son and now 10 year old granddaughter, among them.
And Jim is a Kansas farm boy. Country folk, mountain folk, poor folk will survive. 😉 Blessings to you brother Jared! ❤

I'm not from Appalachia. But, the similarities of culture and language between my area of south Mississippi and Appalachia make me feel a strong kinship with the people of that area.
My grandparents had a general store like the ones described in your video. They lived in the back part with the front being the store. Some of my fondest memories are spending summers there.

There was a little store like that near my grandparents house back in the '70s...I called it " Starbase"...I don't remember its real name. It was crammed full, and if you looked around, you would find what you needed.
One walk was just wallpapered in handwritten notes, about stuff for sale, something someone needed, local church ( or other) events...a radio tuned to the local station. The place just had a life of its own, almost...

We had a couple of the resettled Apalacians up in WA State in a small town called Elbe near Mt Rainier. They owned a general store and and small burger hut next to it called, SCALEBURGERS, a huge tourist favorite. He'd sit in that gwneral store all day every day with a friend or two while she ran the burger hut. They were both in their 90s when we left about 3 years ago. He always had a friendly smile and advice for anything or anyone I needed help from. She loved running Scaleburgers and wouldn't hire extra help like he did unless they were really busy. Sure miss that sweet old couple. 🙂

What's happened to our country? If you think about it, it's not been all that long ago. I only remember one of these in operation. It was located in a small town where we would visit relatives "in the country". I think it was closed by the time I was probably 12 so they were fairly scarce but think about how quickly everything has changed. We didn't want the changes, you know? I mean, we weren't protesting progress but we remember these stores & the characters who gathered there, even the wonderful folks who ran them. But I'm in my 50's now & you're younger than that but when we are gone, there's not going to be even a memory of these places that played a major role in the lives of those blessed to have them in their community. Why can't we just go back in time?? Maybe we'd have a few less possessions but imagine just how rich we would be really. I miss those simple times when people had time to care about, not just their family...their prayers weren't like today..."God bless me & my 3...us 4 & no more." They cared about their neighbor. They helped each other when they were down. Just hope you don't find yourself alone, in need of a friend these days. The people who really cared, True friends who would never foresake you, they disappeared along with the old country stores. It breaks my heart to think that this change happened in my lifetime...already. What will another 40 or 50 years bring to an end?? I'm glad I won't be around to find out. I miss the genuine goodness in the hearts of people. Aside from this little group & a few others like it, those folks are nearly all gone. I'm grateful for this channel & the wonderful memories we all share. You were born for this. You have a story teller's soul & the perfect voice for telling us about the spooks, witches & other spirits. I don't mean to seem negative. I've just seen a little too much. I can't help noticing the changes but thank goodness you're there to remind me of the good ole days & to bring together those of us like-minded with gentle spirits. God bless & thanks again for the reminder ❤

Hey EZ! Thank ya kindly for watchin. Yeah it's so so sad that these are just a memory and we'll never ever see them ole times or the the way the folks was in them ever again. I once stood in an old store like these in the video. And I could honestly almost feel the memories them ole walls contained. Then I realized...when it fell to ruin... So would those memories. That broke my heart so so bad to the point it actually hurt. Folks back then, it even seemed like thier eyes even smiled didn't it!? Yeah you're right, I've seen my share of the Haints I guess that's what gives me that little extra when telling about them. Thank you so so much for watching, enjoying, the kind words and for just being the absolutely amazing person you are! God bless and have a good'n 🙏💙

@@JaredKingTV Thank you for your kind words & for taking a personal interest in those of us who are blessed to be, not only your subscribers but your friends. You make us feel like family & it's that personal connection, as well as your sweet, kindred spirit, that keeps us coming back for more. I especially appreciate your opening prayers & how you call the names of those with requests or just in need of a special, healing touch. As far as the haints go, I haven't seen a whole lot personally but what I have witnessed has left no room for doubt. I've always been far too curious, if that's possible. But I think the most hardened skeptic would become a believer listening to you telling haint stories. There's a Truthfulness & deep conviction that comes through I enjoy all of your stories. Some warm my heart, more flood my mind with memories & my eyes with tears but the ghost stories, this sounds crazy, but those are just so enjoyable, entertaining & somehow relaxing!! Although sometimes, especially at night, I get up & go to the kitchen for drink & "accidentally" leave the light on.😉 I just had to come back & thank you for your reply. This was around 2000 working in Missouri about 45 minutes east of Columbia little bit off of I70 is / was Bucks General store had a picture of Buck who started the store a few gerations ago in the front window. A 1920s cash register, pot belly wood stove and everything a person would need in basic daily life was sold there. A few of us would stop in at lunch had really good lunch meat and cheese and other deli stuff sit around the wood stove eat lunch it was cold outside February wood or coal heat has a deeper warming feel to me. Walking in there was like walking back in time everything sold in the store was made to last and when you bought something there was no receipt they remember what you bought if you needed to return something.
In Ohio was in a Amish General Store sold the basics a person would need and products made in the area, furniture to in season fresh farm goods.
Now you got many store that sell the same cheap products made in a foreign country owned by one investment firm.

appreciate these kinds of videos reminiscent of the people. the good Lord made mankind in his image , all were equal in His eyes. nothing to judge, in His unconditional pure accepting Love, Agape. may we return His ways. equality in respecting love I try every day. in Jesus Christ's name I stand alone Amen

Ive always felt i was born in the wrong generation. Ive always yarned for the days gone by. I miss the good old days, though i was born to late to in this life, ive always felt like maybe i had a life before this one, where i did get to experience the old day. Sounds crazy i know, but even as a child i felt the same way.

Have ya ever thought that (if you believe in such things) perhaps you always felt that way cause you lived as a person in that era in a past life? Sounds odd but, stranger things have happened. Thanks so much for watching. God bless and have a good'n
