    ___________
This gift you gave from the beginning
Warm light, dry land, blue water brimming
And more, from the earth there came a growing
From seed to bloom, all the while you were sowing
It was love, love given in the water
And peace, God’s peace written in the letters
Of the earth, God’s earth, given with a promise
    Can we keep it?
And stars in the night to gaze on them kindly
Great light, cool moon, all aligned in the sky, see
From water came life and so from the land
To feed, not to fight, to stand hand in hand
It was love, love, given in the starlight
and peace, God’s peace, given in the sunshine
and the earth, God’s earth, given with a promise
    Can we keep it?
Out from the silence I hear a voice, I follow it onwards
You whisper to me, I am reminded of every gift you gave
So, spirit lead me unto the waters, unto the earth you made
Teach me the secret to ever care for, to look after it
It was love, love given in the water
And peace, God’s peace, written in the letters
Of the earth, God’s earth, given with a promise
Can we keep it? Can we keep it?
    Can we keep it?

This is such a lovely song! Love the references to Genesis, and the idea that creation is a gift and a covenant promise, where we have our end of the bargain to keep (Genesis 2:15). And it makes sense that if God promises not to destroy the earth (in Genesis 9:8-17), we would respond in love and do the same. Thank you!

Imagine giving someone a gift that you made for either their birthday or Christmas... something you thought really hard about according to that person's interests... something you spent a lot of hours on and money for the necessary supplies... something you were just sure they were going to absolutely LOVE...
only for that person to laugh, break it, and destroy it. How would that make you feel? You tell the person about everything you put into that gift, and they just tell you, "Get over it. Nothing lasts forever." That's how so many people treat the gift of the world that God gave us.
Gen 2:15 - we are supposed to SERVE (abad) and PROTECT (shamar) the earth (sounds like police mottos, right?) So why do so many people get upset when those of us sounding the alarm about how we're destroying the earth speak up? No, it's not going to last forever... but we don't need to make this planet a living hell for future generations. So much has changed in just the 40-ish years I've been alive... I fear what will be left for the younger ones I love. Love your neighbors - even the younger ones and the ones that haven't been born yet. If you destroy the earth for them, you're not loving them.

To care for creation also involves following the food given to us by God at the beginning (Gen 1:29). Food that is derived from peaceful living and not violence and death - which harms creation and causes immense suffering for ALL of Gods created Earth including humans, animals and nature alike. God blesses humans and animals as one in the beginning (and throughout the entire Scriptures with many pointers to our equality with animals by our Lord Jesus as well) God made a promise not just to us but to ALL His living creatures (Gen 9:12-16) See this book for lots of details - A Faith Embracing All Creatures by Tripp York and Andy Alexis-Baker ❤ Read with an open heart and an open mind, this book has the potential to profoundly deepen our relationship with God AND His entire ‘good’ creation.

These are pretty songs but they focus more on the creation and not enough on the Creator or his *real* gift to us--salvation. This earth will pass away and God will create a new one. Of course, we should be good stewards but our focus should be on Jesus and his incomparable gift, which, again, isn't the earth.

All creation is groaning. The salvation Jesus brought wasn't just for us humans but also for the entire cosmos (see Ephesians 1, for example)

@@PhilTomson Salvation is for sinners. Humans are sinners, not the creation or the cosmos. Creation is *affected* by man's sin and fall--it groans--but it doesn't sin.

Romans 8: 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
No one song can tell the whole story of the good news. The Bible takes 66 books and hundreds of pages. The idea that our entire focus should always only be on Jesus is a bit strange. This song is a beautiful, haunting reminder that God put creation under our care, and one of the first fruits of our salvation should be a new love and care for the creation. Today is Pentecost Sunday - a great day to remember that as the Holy Spirit renews us and reminds us of God's love, that renewal and love should flow out into our love and care for the earth and everyone in it.

@@carolkuniholm2143 Yes. Creation was subjected to futility because of man's sin, not its own sin. That whole chapter in context is contrasting life in the Spirit to life in the flesh--which is lived by humans, not trees or flowers or clouds. Good ol' John 3:16--"For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that *whosoever* believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life." Whosoever, not whatsoever. Jesus died for sinners and only humans are sinners.

@@lucysnowe31 Why wouldn’t acknowledging our sin also include the very good possibility that we are not taking as good care of God’s creation as we should, since we’re called to be stewards of the earth?
