Great fun Sam! Yes, SketchUp is excellent software and we use it all the time for architectural projects, car body designs, and even (gasp!) quite large steam locomotive models. We are currently producing several models of a Coronation Class loco at one-tenth scale for a forthcoming filming test, and SketchUp can cope with no problem. Two ideas you might find useful are to be careful with the thickness of walls with windows in, since it looks better if the visible edges aren't too thick. And SketchUp has limitations when printing gradual curves, such as carriage roofs, so we tend to laminate styrene sheet onto those. Your next nemesis to be faced will be painting and weathering these suckers, and you are really going to enjoy that!

Sam I have a few comments:
    1. My son finally got a 3-D printer and he LOVES it. Talk about keeping someone OUT of trouble.
    2. He is honing his design Engineering skills...although his study is in Electronics, he's enjoying the mechanical design aspect of this.
3.To anyone interested in becoming a mechanical manufacturing or Design Engineer I CANNOT recommend enough to GET one of these. Your skills will improve AND it will look GREAT on your job resume...even if you just use it as a hobby.
    4. I would have KILLED for one of these when I was younger!
Lastly, Sam - I thank you for this video because it will encourage anyone interested in possibly becoming a mechanical Manufacturing or Design Engineer.....and we can't have ENOUGH of those. I ought to know, I work in the corporate world and we NEVER SEEM to have enough mechanical Engineers. Great and fun vid!

Beautiful little coach - it's a bit 'Titfield Thunderbolt-y'. Love the modularity, too - if you made a 6 wheel chassis, and some clerestory-type roofs, and a brake section, with duckets, the permutations would be almost endless. It's brilliant!

Hey Sam, that coach is glorious! I've had a few stabs at a two compartment coach on a wagon chassis, and I completely agree with what you said about narrow-gauge. This sort of thing lets you enjoy the low-space freelance fun of OO9, but using standard-gauge components.
I reckon a brake coach is the next natural step. One of the problems with the Hornby 4-wheelers is that they're all identical - a brake coach is the solution. You might also want to consider adding step boards to the chassis.
I've had some success with two-compartment horse-drawn-carriage style coaches (with curved beading).

Since you made this coach build, I have some matching suggestions
    - a 4-wheel observation lounge (it's meant to represent the company president's coach)
    - a 4-wheel corridor coach
-an 8-wheel version of the coach you made in this video to fit the 8-wheel chassis you showed on the live stream
Some other, less-matching suggestions for 3D prints I have are
    - a fireless engine to fit a Hornby 0-4-0 shell
    - 8-wheel versions of the freight wagons you previously made
    - a highland railway brake van
    - a brake van with extended platforms similar to those used at NRM shildon
    -a "Birdcage" brake van

There's indeed such small and cute coaches on narrow gauge railways.
You can make a brake/luggage van of the same size and style in very little time by just modifying your 3d model. The magic of 3d editing!
A more advanced stuff to create would be a 4 axles bogie chassis, because of moving mechanical parts.

  • @DouglasParkinson
    @DouglasParkinson 3 ปีที่แล้ว

That looks very nice and shows that a little skill can go a long way :)
I have a bit of experience with SketchUp, allow me to offer some tips.
The Offset tool (shortcut O) allows you to create larger or smaller versions of a shape. It's not scaling, since all edges move an equal distance from their own starting points rather than moving relative to the centre of gravity of the shape. This would help with a number of jobs with the planking, such as finding the window shape and planking thickness; this would work very well for finding the centre points of the window corners.
Copying: any selection you make can be copied if you press Ctrl before moving or rotating it. Some of your work, such as the details on the roof furniture could be cloned as a quicker and easier method of producing multiple identical parts.
Tolerances: in general, you need a 0.2mm distance between parts for a tight fit, and 0.4-5 for a loose fit. This will save you filing parts without tolerances to get them to fit.
Also worth noting: at OO scale, 1mm in the real world is roughly equivalent to 3" or 7.5cm, reasonable overhang for the roof.
Hope some of this helps improve your workflow :)

Amazing design work - and great to see another happy Adventurer 3 user. Assuming that you're printing PLA, you have a lot more stringing issues (the whiskers on your prints) than you should have, though. You may want to do some combination of 1) drying your filament, 2) cleaning your nozzle, 3) lowering your print temperature slightly, and 4) increasing retraction in your print settings. You should be able to get even cleaner prints than you're already getting :-)

I’ve got an idea: modify the 3D model to create a brake coach to go with it! It shouldn’t be too hard. All you need to do is remove the windows on the second compartment, remove the seats and move the doors a little bit

You could also use them as workmen transportation coaches for maintenance duties.

Absolutely crazy Sam, the detail you’re able to put in is astonishing!! That’s actually worthy of a place in Hornby’s RailRoad Range if not even the full range (maybe a bit more separately fitted detail or a cast metal chassis for the main range to appeal to your ratings!! 🤣) I think it’d be a cool idea to do a Bullman but where his legs are the axelboxes to hold the wheels so there’s no chassis of a wagon and it’s as if he’s on roller skates!! Would you be able to review an Irish Model at some point as well?? Thanks for keeping us all entertained! Stay safe!

Looks good. I would've made the luggage racks larger, and contoured the inside of the walls to the same as the outside. Also the side panel raised bits seem to sit a bit too proud of the walls, but I don't know how much you could reduce that by. The light fittings seem a bit large too.
It'd be fun to see a range of these coaches, with different wheelbases. 3 and 4 compartments on a longer 4-wheel chassis, and more on bogie chassis. And maybe some open coach designs, like the L&MR 3rd class ones. And if you design a modular coach that can be printed in sections, maybe you could make a stupidly long one too (maybe longer than the oxford railgun?)

Wow! How inspiring...You are doing miracles as far as I can see. Well done!
I look forward to your next adventures in this area.
These wagons of yours...Chassis - Open - Box - Tank - and now Coach are wonderful.
    Will you be painting them?
Can your printer make a simulated wood texture?
New Chassis = try for a bogie design
New wagons = Rake of coaches and a luggage van followed by a brake van
New Idea = You mentioned 'narrow gauge, how about it? OO9 is popular and the little coach, with a section cut out of the middle and rejoined would look quaint enough for a gauge/scale that has a prototype for everything...

More 3D brilliance! I am in the middle of building three little 3D printed coaches that fit onto Tri-ang or Hornby 4 wheel wagon chassis. I got them from another site and I am so looking forward to finishing the painting and assembly so that I can run them. I have gone the whole hog and put Pullman brass lamps on the tables and paper prints of Axminster carpet on the floors! (Retirees have lots of time) I hope you make a whole train of them and, yes, a brake/3rd would be excellent. :-)

if you want to get the best details, there are a few tunings to do on a 3d printer :
    1) lower the nozzle's size, you will achieve way better results with a 0.1mm nozzle than a 0.4mm but the downside is that it tremendously increases the printing time => mechanical precision
    2) lower the printing speed and put the cooling fan speed to the max to allow the part to cool down before the next layer => lower the thermal deformations
    3) print multiple parts to add delay beetween layers => lower thermal deformation
    4) lower the accelerations of the printer (slicer settings) => less oscillations and deformations of the printer (it's not an underformable solid) => more accurate positionning of the nozzle=> more precision
next episode : a pullman car with its boggies

I reckon a few more of those coaches all painted up would look fantastic behind the P class, you really do have an eye for detail. If you do want some suggestions then I have another challenge for you. Create a steam engine body that will fit onto the Hornby Railroad 0-6-0 chassis. Good luck and keep the faith.

wow sam very impressive. I've just been reading King Of The Light Railways by Robin Jones, all about the Light Railways owned by Colonel Holman F Stephens - The East Kent, Weston Clevedon and Portishead, Rother Valley etc. That coach looks like a number of coaches those railways used, in particular a number of former London Chatham And Dover vehicles built in the 1850's, acquired in the 1890's and use right up to the early 1940's. An interesting variation of which is the open saloon coach. Similar looking on the outside, but the interior would be like a mini Victorian drawing room , complete with arm chairs and tables. These could be hired for certain journeys and were popular with the better off traveler for going on summer sabbaticals. Many railways had them in the 1850's, most notably the LNWR and the GNR. There is a GWR example (on a longer wheel base) preserved on the South Devon Rly, and there are loadds of photos are drawings online for inspiration. One or two of them would be cool. Also a matching passenger brake / luggage van wouldn't go amiss. No passenger accommodation, but guars lookouts on the sides and larger doors.
Other short wheel base ideas? a rectangular tar wagon. a gas cylinder wagon and an acid tank would make interesting projects, again old pics, diagrams and images of preserved examples can be googled for ideas.
I will also suggest some era 1 goods stock, very simple designs, but unique and interesting wagons, again a google will bring up some pics.
After that how about a longer wheel base chassis, 14' or 18'' will be cool some later victorian coaches and some cool 1930's style wagon projects.
    I await developments with interest.
    Keep up the fine work

Make your first train a mix... freight and passenger. Baggage/royalty wagon and brake van are next. A small depot and signal, then. Stub buffer with water tank and platform (equipped with roof overhang.)
Done... now run your train, and shunt when the time comes. Congratulations!

Maybe you should make a break van! You did a little assembly of separate parts with the tanker earlier so I think that would be a logical progression in difficulty, like with installing separate break cranks inside the van.

  • @jeanricard918

Very impressive now you have to make a modified chassis with running boards and steps for the doors.
Great videos on 3D printing by the way.
Maybe a challenge would be to make a chassis with bogies, or perhaps a body for a break van or coaches?
    Keep up the good work.
