    So this morning I went to register for my spot in the Fort Sam Houston RV park, and guess who I ran into at the office. Yup, you guessed it. I walked in the door and said "Hey Phil" and you should have seen the look on his face. After I laughed I told him that I follow them on TH-cam. Well, we hit it off and my wife and I spent about 1 hour chatting with them. These folks are very real. I enjoyed that time visiting with them. Hopefully, we get to visit a bit more before they have to go. As a new RVer, I have already learned so much from them in that one hour of conversation. You guys are awesome and I continue to say, you are my favorite military RVer couple in TH-cam.

    Check to see if they are giving you a 1099 at the end of the year so you pay taxes, some RV parks will do this. They'll put a monetary valve on the work you'll done so they can write it off.

    I'm on a workcamping gig now as we speak, care taker of a private ranch. Most gigs are based on a low salary. You need to be careful with the hours expected from you in exchange for a RV site, normally around 20 hours a week. Lets say your labor is worth $12-$15 an hour , that would be around a $1000 a month of labor just in exchange for the site with hookups. They got very lucky with these clean restrooms. I was a camp host at a very busy National Park, lasted about a month. Worked my butt off, most campers were complete pigs, having to clean campsites and restrooms every day. There are some great workcamping gigs out there, just do your research before committing. Any questions, I'll be happy to reply. Almost forgot, if you are a handyman, basic electrical, plumbing, painting, you can do very well, these positions are in high demand. Great video!

    Great advice about camp hosting. I suggest surgical mask and gloves when cleaning bathrooms especially toilets. Both are pretty cheap to buy. "Particles" can become airborne when scrubbing, sweeping etc. Airborne particles can make you sick it's also a good idea to change and clean your clothing in sanitizer after cleaning bathrooms. Too many really nasty germs lurking about in human waste to take chances.

    I’m a housekeeper at a college! I made this seven year investment to save money since free tuition is one of the benefits. Our son graduated this past May with two degrees in fours years, so he got the most for this mommas toilet cleaning dollar! We are looking forward to doing extended travel in our fifth wheel and hosting/work amping is something we will be considering. No bathhouse cleaning fear after looking after college kids.😂Thanks for your easy laid back videos with great information.

    families living on the battlefield.
    It was a extremely interesting thing to do. We met a lot of folks, shot the canons during displays plus the talks. We only worked three days each week and stayed for two months. We would definitely do it again.

    We hosted for 5 months at a state park in Oregon. We did not have to clean bathrooms and if there were any bio-hazards in campsites or cabins (from kids coming out to party for instance) we just had to report it to the rangers and they would handle it. Expectations were low, but they were happy if you went above and beyond. An example of this is I helped stack a few cords of wood that were dumped outside the wood shed. All told we loved it and would do it again. The only downside my wife didn't like was she felt like she was on display and on duty 24x7 because we were in the marked camp host site. She has a bit of persecution complex and I didn't feel that at all.
    State Parks also tend to put limits of a couple of months per position or in the park, so it is easy to set up your duty for as little as a month at a time if you want to stay mobile.

    • @pukwudjivc
      @pukwudjivc 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I should add we did this during the winter and there were points where we had over a foot of snow. There were times when we knew there was only one other person, the other camp host, in the whole park and it felt a bit like The Shining, but that was pretty neat.

    Last year we planned to spend our summer doing this type of trade work for campsite duty. We talked to a few places and a person also asked us to take her and spouse's place just like you did, however it was a LONG way from where we were at, it turned out to be an old trailer park and their expectations for us were huge, bathrooms, 24 hr on call, office and landscape! We gave notice there and signed on with a chain type campground about 150 mi away, again things were immediately not going to be what owners described before we arrived. Normally, our good-nature would be to just grin and bear it but the sacrifice would be our 2 little dogs (and us) being upset all day long, daily, so we left within 1 hr. The next 3 months was a series of similar disappointments, including an on-site security assignment that we were offered a very long distance away but paid actual $$$ plus a site, so we felt that we could work very hard for that type of arrangement, we rushed to the site, no work started for 2 weeks and our resources had been stretched thin and they asked us to pay a huge amt of $$ for the site which was a mudhole on the side of a road,until the work would start. At this point we had met our boiling point and headed for home, greatly disappointed in people in general. How can they lie to people, get them to travel great distances and then treat them like day laborers or less? We feel that until campgrounds understand our situation, we would never do hosting again unless it was 20 miles from our house and we had a written contract. This video was honest and will help others foresee that things are not all rosy like cg owners portray. Basically it sounds like you together worked 80 hrs a month, lets say equal to $10/hr $800 for a $350 site, thats how much Escapees Club charges for really nice sites for a month and you pay elec. That is wrong of them. The final cg we tried, they parked us in a ditch about 10ft from I10 in New Mexico.....we woke up the next morning and told them we were going to retire from camp hosting!

    • @todayissomeday
      @todayissomeday  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is just crazy! I am sorry to hear about your terrible experiences with camp hosting. If you every decide to do it again I would recommend you try the federal agencies. They are regulated and have very specific job descriptions and contracts. National park service or Army Corps of Engineers would be excellent choices.

Now we find we prefer being active rather than sitting. We hit the road April 1st heading back out west to workamp April-Sept at a private campground, paid for all hours worked 2 days off per week more if we want it. We find it is a great way to supplement SS income and add to the savings acct. We are 80 and 78 and have hosted about 8 seasons and love it. We go beyond the call of duty giving our time to campers day and night ---- literally
    We have 4 bath houses and 45 sites to do every day. Campers love how fresh we keep them
    However after all these seasons of absolutely perfect work they won't renew our contract next season just because l called a couple of times politely telling how their rules weren't being followed by our management. Unbelievable and cruel --- we want to work and we DO the work. Even on our day off

    We have done this for years in Florida and I am at the point now where I will never again do bath houses. My husband got a bacterial infection that almost killed him. He had to go daily for IV antibiotics for almost a year from a bath house in St. Augustine. He was so sick that the Dr even said they did not know if they could keep him alive 48 hours. They kept asking us where had we traveled out of the country because they had only seen this in feces of people from third world countries. We had not traveled out of the state but at this park it seems every one thought taking a dump in the shower was where they were supposed to do it. (State Park)
    I enjoy working ranger stations and nature centers but will never again go where bath houses are involved and last year when we went out I refused to do it at all. Not my idea of a vacation at all. But also in Florida you cant get a winter job because all the snow birds come here and take every single job available all winter long and only crazies or desperate people for a place to live will do it in the summers here.

      Thanks Cecilia. We agree....6 months is way too long to sit. We got into this lifestyle to travel!

      Read my posted comment. We tried out several locations last summer, they assign the worse sites they have. Our first one the workcamper site was right next to the office and clubhouse in Wa, doper owners. Our last site was in a ditch 10ft off I10 in New Mexico.

    The bathrooms. In college part of my duties we’re cleaning the restrooms in the Student Union. 😬😬 not perfect but you know. I learned that the ladies were the messiest - (disclaimer, in this neck of the woods.) I sit to pee so ladies focus.!! 🙂🙂

    I would guess that size of the campground and its condition might be a consideration in choosing a campground. Met a host couple at the combined base in Charleston SC. Very new small and the hosts that we met since we stayed next to them indicated they would come back to that campground to host anytime they could. Wonder if you have been there?
