  • Thank you so much for being here!
I love getting to know all of you so introduce yourself in the comments. If you're in the Eugene area and currently involved with vanlife, or are wanting to live this lifestyle, please email me Contact@mybasicjourney.com (: I'd love to talk!
This week I start my new job as a camp host! I wanted to show you guys an option for making money while you're on the road!
After uploading (from my phone which I never do), I noticed the sound is kind of whack. I'm sorry about this. I dont know whether it is my phone microphone, an issue with exporting, or an issue with uploading from my phone. Regardless, my apologies.
I also noticed that I forgot to add clips of the Shower/resort. I'll probably just make an entire video about it.
I really botched this one guys. Haha
Thanks to you guys (my subscribers and friends) again for being here. Subscribe for more (mini) VanLife content, as well as travel, adventure and becoming a digital nomad.
    xoxo

Try not to forget ordering an off grid shower from WalMarts. I saw the small table on WalMarts or Amazon. I got my showering, these showers are online purchases too. May have to have it mailed to one near there. Enjoy the job, one will be collecting for the Park, the camping fees. Yet, it is still a free place to campout at with Joey. Have fun no matter what ! Our lives are meant to be lived. I know one doesn't read the comments too much. Been writing and putting in a little love into my letters! Let it happen from the heart today! Paul

Love your channel. You can use a garden pump (like the one you used sanitizing the bathroom) as a shower. Paint it black and leave it in the sun. A hoolahoop with a shower curtain hung from a tree works as an enclosure. Not as good as the bath house, but free.

Tip...make sure there is NO shade on your solar panels as it reduces efficiency. Also try to place the panel perpendicular to the sun as much as possible...this means you need to adjust it frequently...like every hour or so. Happy camping!

@@MyBasicJourney I agree with the solar advice. Plus, I also have a 120W 3-fold panel (ACO). I can get mine to fit on my dashboard inside the car- it's big like a car shade. But the great thing is if you're parked toward the sun, you can leave it locked up in your car so that it charges your battery while you're away. Let me know if that works out for you. :)

    • @johnbergholm
      @johnbergholm 4 ปีที่แล้ว

D A that is a great suggestion and no doubt it works but at reduced efficiency. Auto glass is made to cut down on solar transmission to help keep the vehicle interior cooler. Perhaps you could just as well put it on the outside of the windshield (while stationary, of course) with the van facing into the sun.
Also, if you can afford it, Chantelle, perhaps you can connect a second panel to the first. I don’t know if there’s a mechanism for connecting multiple panels together but that would help speed up charging. I have two 100 watt rigid panels connected in parallel mounted on my van roof and they charge my power station at approx 20% per hour.

Honestly, I would simply make friends at the resort, ask if you could make an appointment to talk with the manager, explain your battery charging ( overnight) and your shower needs and see if they might accommodate you for free as a professional courtesy.

You may need to get another solar panel ( case type) to have for extra charging. I'm in Ontario, Canada. I would expect the camp host site to have electric and water. Just a beautiful campsite.

    • @carmenwheatley7316

Great 👍🏼 Info. Just a couple of thoughts. Really....a shower 🚿 at the “resort” daily or 4/per week should be included in your benefits. Also, the electric ⚡️ charging of your Jackary there also, secured, so you don’t have to be there; especially since you are required to do work on your laptop. Please pass this on to management. Coming from someone not involved they may take note.

Just a tip: when the manager brought the mop bucket for the bathroom, he/she also brought a clothes washing machine. When the power was out for weeks after a hurricane,I used my pro mop bucket and a plunger. Water, soap and clothes in the bucket, agitate with a tiny $ tree plunger, place clothes in wringer and wring out,. When finished, repeat with just fresh water to rinse. I also popped a tent up in the yard to hang my clothes inside, in case of rain. I agree with the guys about angling your solar panel. Place the end flap on the table, and use a piece of wood, like one of those logs at the bottom(behind the panel) to keep it angled. Longest exposure to sun is Facing South to South South West. That way you get the most time coverage while you go off to work on a site. Maybe if a you look into rapid charge cords for your phone, you can charge the phone on the way to the resort, or shopping. Also, adjust your upload schedule for days off at a Starbucks or wherever, in town. There are also very inexpensive solar battery packs that I use, like the patriot battery bank, but brand really doesn't matter. you leave them in the dash of your car and drain them nightly. some under $20 you could dedicate one to your USB fan, one to your phone or night lights, and recharge them all day www.amazon.com/s?k=solar+batterypack&ref=nb_sb_noss

Some kind of camp toilet is a must to make things more comfortable........a small cassette toilet is my choice. You can line it with a plastic bag 4 number 2 if you don't want to empty it, but they are designed 4 both. You can put fabric softener in it to brake down the solid waste and use septic-tank safe toilet paper and that's that.

Loving your journey! I'm in Portland, and I'm currently a weekend warrior car camper. I'm saving for a minivan too! It would be so cool if a bunch of us following you could visit your campground throughout the summer.
You can clean the rust off your toaster thing real easy! I know this sounds crazy, but the tanins from black tea dissolve rust, it's how I clean all my garden tools. Just brew really strong concentrated tea in a container large enough to submerge your toaster, and let it soak for a day. Then the rust should scrub off. If the rust is REAL bad, you might have to do it twice. I get giant boxes of black tea from the dollar tree to use (but don't drink dollar tree tea, it's so full of pesticides!).
Enjoy your summer, I'll be here with you!

Easy shower set up - bucket, iron hammer portable camp shower from Amazon, Ozark trail (or other brand) two room shower/changing tent, and your collapsible laundry basket. Heat up water, put it in the bucket and put that in the shower tent with the shower pump, then stand in the laundry basket to collect the grey water. You can put the bucket on a small table so the pump is in easy reach to turn on and off.

New subscriber!! Maybe look into something like a Weboost device to help strengthen your mobile hotspot signal. Also make sure your solar panel follows the sun's path without any obstruction as much as possible. This may mean you having to adjust your panel placements a few times throughout the day. But it'll help to maximize your jackery charger. . . Oooh! And a quick low cost solve to your shower situation, you can use a liter or 2 liter water bottle, cover it with black duct tape (this will help to heat your water by using the sun's heat energy), poke a few holes in the cap to make a rain spigot. You can fill your liter bottle with water and once your water is heated to your desired temperature, then all you need to do is turn your bottle upside down and give yourself a roughage shower. Allow the water to run only enough to get your hair and body wet then stop. Lather your soap and use your wash rag with no running water. Then once you have gone through both your hair and body, then pour your liter bottle over you again to rinse.
Once you get the formula down of how much water you actually need, the process will become much easier.
Wishing you all the best of luck! I can't wait to see all the tips and tricks you discover on this exciting journey of yours!

Recently found your videos and subbed. You are a fighter and inspiring. Van life is interesting and I’ve been watching videos.. Oregon looks beautiful, a lot like northern Maine.
I watched the video about being sober. It’s not easy without support. I did my 1st detox (court ordered) in 89. I stayed sober 10 years but picked up opiates/dope again in 00 and numerous more detoxes. The last was in 06. I’ll still mess with benzos etc off/on..
Anyway, I managed to hold onto a job in 2 different cities for 28 years. One of the best workers but many detoxes, trouble, not showing up and they forced me to retire young in 2012. I’ve had it all, house, nice cars, women (another addiction) but always screw it up. I’m babbling but it just gets worse.
Having 4 years is great. You have an awesome attitude and perseverance. I’m rooting for you and look forward to next video.

Thank you, Thomas! It sounds like we've had similar struggles. So awesome that you're not into opiates anymore! I've lost too many people, as I'm sure you have. So awesome you were able to overcome it. It's not easy!!! 💖 xoxo

Hi , my name is Peggy and I hope to start my Van life next year (2021). I appreciate all your information about your build. Also for the job lead, I will definitely be reaching out to them about a position for next summer when I start my adventure. Right now I'm just in the purchase the vehicle phase. I'm 71, raised on a farm and been employed in corporate america for the past 50 years. I'm done with that and because of the COVID I've been unemployed for the past few months, but on social security and finally getting unemployment. I'm hoping I can squeak by for the rest of the year and through to end of March next year. I hope to get a vehicle soon and I'm saving every penny I can get my hands on. I talked to my oldest daughter briefly and she thinks I've gone crazy and does not agree with this lifestyle. Oh well, it's my lifestyle. Thanks again for all the information and links.

Buy solar shower or weed sprayer (you have to heat up water in your stove so it’ll be bearable) as portable shower since you have a tent anyway so you can shower everyday. You can also use shower toga for added security so you’re not full on nude in your tent.

Just a suggestion for your solar panel sit it upright at an angle to get as much sun as you can. Your jackery will come in handy alot. I saw my first one on chrome Valdez's channel. He also has a standup solar panel. Check him out of you haven't

Wow! Chantelle I’m glad I found your channel, and I give you a lot of credit for living out a dream! You should not be expected, btw, to have to use your laptop for work without them providing power for you! That’s just wrong. In the meantime I think you need an additional solar panel (and make sure it’s in full sunlight when charging...WAY faster!) Anyway I’ll be following your adventures. I don’t currently live in my van but hope to again! I wish you the best! -Dale/Minnesota

Oh bless the body wipes 😂😂
And finally the gyms are back open. Btw if you hook your jackery to the car 12v it will charge it pretty efficiently:)
    But run your car.

    • @MyBasicJourney
      @MyBasicJourney  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

So many people are suggesting that. I only drive into town (an hour commute from here) once a week. I charge the jackery with my car battery when I do. It takes like 8 hours to fully charge the jackery, so using my car battery is not a good idea, and I can't just waste my gas for that long. It's also not good for your car to idle for that long.

If you switch to a twin bed you could really maximize your space. Charge your jackets from car battery when you drive. You could fix coffee and use butane camping stove on a collapsable tray.. you can get 12v fan, 12 v rice cooker that you can cook soup, meat and steam vegetables. 12 v blanket. A secondary battery and inverter that charges when you drive would also be a great blessing for your electrical needs.
