I bought a 2001 bmw 318i 1.9L 2 weeks ago, I'm 20 years old and paying £142 a month, had to replace coolant tank and done a service. Needs 3 windows regulator sorting out and rocker cover soon. Its a huge gamble buying these cars, you never know what to expect 😂
10 weeks ago I bought my E46 318 CI SE convertible 2005. Absolutely love it. One breakdown, coil failure which put the car in limp mode witch, what I thought was a terminal problem. The AA man who turned up and was an ex BMW mechanic soon found the fault, 2 cylinder not working..... Coil failure.. Fortunately he had one on the van. £59.99, of course I was grateful, so now I carry one, £18.50 on EBAY. and so easy to replace. He told me common fault..
Loved my e46 320d. Super reliable. Strongly recommend getting remap (I got a superchips bluefin for ease and also to put it back to standard if I ever needed to). It vastly improved the car without any negative effects. I also put in a K&N air filter which made no discernible difference so I wouldn't bother with that. The next best upgrade I made was upgrading to Eibach anti-roll bars. At the age and mileage of your car you might find that the fuel pump is on its last legs, if it hasn't already been changed. It's almost impossible to diagnose electronically but if you get occasional 'lulls' in power that is a warning sign
I'm looking to buy one of these later this year as a first car. 2k a year on insurance it looks like. Hopefully, I can find one in good condition. The presentation of this video was brilliant i have to say. Good job
I pay £57 a month for my 2004 320d sport, 28 with 7 years NCB. I used to work for a car insurance firm and it's usually your location that makes the most difference to the price (within reason). I've had the car 2 months and in that time I've had to replace a front calliper, new brake pads all round, new discs on the front as well as all the usual preventative maintenance with a car with little service history (all fluids changed, diff, engine, gearbox). DSC is also throwing the occasional fit so there will probably be a speed sensor I need to change out. She's on 162k miles atm and I'll probably keep her for a good few years now. I've come from having an MX5 for a daily for the last 3 years and I'm really impressed with the handling on this car to say it's around 400-500kg heavier than what I'm used to driving. Really is a lot to be said for 50/50 weight distribution.
I agree that location can change prices drastically! Sounds like you’ve done a lot of the maintenance work already so hopefully the car will treat you well for the next few years 🤙🏻 They handle great, never owned an mx5... I imagine they are just as good!
laughed so hard when you said £60 a month was expensive for the beamer, I was driving a 2007 1.6 Suzuki swift sport and was paying £130 monthly. xD cant wait to pay these prices for car insurance.
Why's your insurance so expensive? I'm 23 with 2 years no claims paying £604 for the year for my 2015 2.0 Scirocco with coilovers and induction kit declared :O
@@BiggaBeatz When i got mine i went through compare the market and got quotes for around £1k and then i contacted adrian flux and they offered me a policy for £604. Hi great video and yeah they are great cars had mine 3 years now there's quite a list of common problems with them but we all have our own taste in cars at the end of the day.
I think the fact the engine has less emission restrictions does help it achieve really good mpg! Can’t beat the quality of the 2000s era of BMWs in my opinion 🤙🏻
E46 320d touring 28yrs old,8yrs NCB €960 for the years insurance... Expensive car to maintain when you add lots of preventive maintenance...then mods etc.. By far the car is a great daily and has done all iv asked of it... Owned for 3 years now,in 2years of driving I covered 65-70k miles in it...rear banana arm gave way one day only hickup!

why on earth is m sport more expensive to insure? its bumpers and suspension nothing else, 320d itself is already powerful with 110kw on basic package, wtf UK Insurance for me is 32€ for 3 months, and road tax is 137€ for a year
I was paying 250 pounds a year for my e46 320cd insurance though I was about 33 when I bought it with 8 or 9 years ncd. Had it for 5 years and was a solid motor, sold it recently as had put 50k on it since I owned it and was up to 120k, was getting to that age where lots of things were starting to go wrong. Couldn't be arsed with all the money and hassle of putting it right. did a few repairs myself while I owned it. Also my road tax was only about 180 or 190 a year on it... why is yours so expensive? Also worth mentioning they like to chew through the rear tyres every 18 months or so... even for a 2 litre diesel! the fronts last forever though lol
Nice video mate, do you know around how much will cost me the insurance for a similar car? I drive on Brazil for more than 15 years, but my uk driving license I finished this month, and I’m 36 years old, cheers
Great video. I was thinking to buy one for like few months. Yesterday I decided I will "downgrade" from 2010 a3 8pa Sline 2.0 168 bhp. But I will aim to get minimum 2 litre petrol coupe e46 :)
Really good video, just found your channel. One thing to note though is I’ve found the onboard computers MPG predictions isn’t necessary very accurate on E46s. My current 330d touring has an onboard computer MPG of 55-60 mpg when doing motorway driving. ( resetting when I fill up ) However when checking it by brimming the tank and calculating the actual mpg it only manages 45ish. So might be worth checking to see what you’re actually getting. For reference 45mpg gets me about 580 miles before the fuel light coming on for comparison. Cheers
Dear lord, changed my mates 318D E90 (which has the same M47D20 engine in it) both thermostats for 30 euros, parts were 40-50 euros i think. 250 pounds vs 75 eur, living in the UK and owning and old BMW must be "nice".
Damn, my freaking astra is expensive to own... I'd better move to a 320d. Same kind of money spent on the car to fix... and it's a crap car. At least this one is nice
