  • G'day guys, today we are reacting to more classic Southern Rock. Lynyrd Skynyrd Free Bird. This one went off, it was a show of how a guitarist when free can rock out. It was great.

    A legendary moment...Knebworth' 76:
So, the Stones built this pompous giant 100-foot tongue that stuck itself out into the audience. Opening band Lynyrd Skynyrd was told DO NOT to go onto the tongue! No tongue! Having heard they were good, the Stones had booked Skynyrd to open, not knowing they were about to have their tongue violated. Skynyrd started slow, confusing the young Brits, who had been expecting bombast and posing and were drugged accordingly. Instead, they teased the restless crowd with that slow Southern drawl, building up the tension as some in the crowd fell asleep while others searched for more drugs. And then it began, the slow burn. The fuse was lit. No turning back now. If the Stones could have curled that tongue back up they would have. But it was too late. The damn thing took off like an airplane, triple lead guitars sailing into the sky. Ronnie was behind the guitars, pushing them towards the tongue! They slid down the tongue like a smooth promise and soon three guitars were poised on the tip, shredding. The bass player tried to join them but his cord was too short. He continued playing mid-tongue. The crowd whirled, spun, undulated, pulsated. A few coiffed strays held a stiff upper lift but as the song escalated they succumbed to the power of the mysterious colonial bards. The tongue itself vibrated under all the excitement. Mick was not amused.

Actually, no. Hot Tuna with Jorma Kaukonen played before LS and they always played their hearts and a--es off. But Lynyrd Skynyrd probably was the memorable highlight, blowing away Todd Rundgren and 10cc, and narrowing pipping the Stones.

    • @ckobo84

I took members of the crowd "falling asleep" as them just really getting into the mellow out portion of the song. Obviously the person making the video thought the same thing, if it wasn't considered a positive it wouldn't have been included.

The Rolling Stones covered up that part of the stage for their performance, it's their signature tongue shaped stage. They told them not to go on it, so during the solo Ronnie had to push them out there to make sure they were seen by everyone and to take a dig at the Stones for making such a demand.

That is an all-time classic and having been listening to that for over 40 years it's easy to take for granted. However, watching through the eyes of someone seeing it for the first time it really makes me appreciate it again. Allen Collins, Gary Rossington and Steve Gaines on the 3 (count em, 3!) lead guitars. Artimus Pyle on drums, Leon Wilkeson on bass, Billy Powell on piano, Ronnie van Zant on lead vocals. Steve Gaines' sister, Cassie is doing backup vocals. Tragically, Ronnie, Steve and Cassie were killed in a plane crash in October, 1977. Those who survived were badly injured. Amazingly, the band would rise from the ashes and tour again. Absolute legends, all of them.

I’m a drummer. I wanted to play the guitar but I couldn’t find anyone to teach me left handed. Then one day a guitarist asked if I would sit in on the drums for his band in a church. I told him I had tried, but couldn’t play the drums. He asked if I was willing to learn. I said sure.
He sat me down, asked if I was left or right handed. I said left, but right foot dominate. He told me to put my left hand on the hats, right hand on the snare, right foot on the kick, and count to four. He showed me a simple beat and then the band played every song to the tempo I followed by watching his foot tapping. It wasn’t pretty, but because no one in the church made fun of me or told me it was bad, I continued learning.
30 years of drumming later and I’m still partial to hearing a kick ass guitar heavy song.

Great reaction video Pat! I was lucky enough to see this fantastic band live in Minneapolis before that tragic plane crash tore a hugh hole in rock & roll😪. You cannot go wrong with any of their songs Pat...they had so many epic classics😄. The thing I absolutely love about Skynyrd is that absolute powerhouse guitar sound that they kicked out song after song. If you are in the right mood, when Lynyrd Skynyrd kicks into the jam at the second half of "Free Bird", it will bring chills up and down your entire body!!! Well done mate😊. Thanks for that one💖.

Thank you very much for doing this reaction video - much appreciated. This footage is from the Knebworth fair show in Hertfordshire England. Lynyrd Skynyrd was the opening act for the Rolling Stones. The one rule was that they ( Skynyrd ), were not allowed to venture out on the "tongue" ( the ramp ), as that was Rolling Stones only territory. Mick Jagger was reportedly pissed. The guitar work is phenomenal - Gary Rossington with that sweet Gibson SG, Allen Collins with the venerable Gibson Explorer, and Steve Gaines with the Gibson Les Paul ( Steve more often than not was a Fender Stratocaster whiz ). Gary is the only surviving original member.

probably the best live band, any of their albums1973-77 are just full of classics, their awesome live One more from/for the road, great simple straight lyrics that tell stories about the common people, 4 great lead guitars, Ed left in 75 Steve was his replacement, both sharing the same birthday
Skynyrd wasn't a jam band, was a hard working band, spending countless hours on getting the songs right, all of the solos were written and arranged to be played almost exactly every night, very little variations through out the years in length and changes, even their producer Al Kooper was amazed by the level of restrain, focus and hard work,

One of the best bands to come out of Muscle Schoals Recording Studio located in Sheffield, Alabama (just a hole-in-the wall with fabulous acoustics). Others who've recorded there include (but not limited to) the Rolling Stones, Bob Seger, Elton John, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, and Glenn Frey. I believe Lynyrd Skynyrd's genre is also known as Hillbilly Rock (i.e., Marshall Tucker Band, Allman Brothers, CCR, and ZZ Top). Seemed like the instrumentals went on forever, but really didn't want to stop!

I, by the by was 21 in 1976. I wasn't at this particular concert, but was able to see him another time. This man and his band were amazing, to me the best guitarist of his time... just saying, I really do feel sad to think that so many of the younger generations, yourself included, don't have the opportunity to see some of the greats that have gone. ok, I'm done, would not think to stop once the music starts!...envy you hearing Free Bird for the first time! have a great day from Canada!
