I was a sheet metal apprentice during the 70's, and being black and male, you are not wanted. If you are not wanted, then you aren't supported. And in construction, if you are not supported, that is dangerous.

As a recent graduate of a automotive technician program. I appreciate the insight, from one black man to another. I’m very excited about the field though, sounds similar to the military haha.

As a BLACK Technician in the auto industry for 30 years and a business owner for 20 years what was said in the video is correct, we who have been in the industry for a while have experienced these issues. In my area I have the highest shop labor rate & FIX a lot of vehicles most shops can't, so I see a lot of B.S. For my young techs shut the hell up and keep your ears open, learn as much as you can although management will try to pay you the least as possible. Forget being fast, learn how to repair vehicles the right way as we have a technician shortage now the money is going to come if you have the determination. If anyone needs help on a car, questions on how to deal with service advisors or service managers, want to know what to learn to get you the max money. Contact me and we can walk it through.

My experience as a tech was short lived before switching to another strength. Started my first official job working for Sears in 2012 as a lube tech. All the higher techs would sit and wait for the big tickets. I was an hourly so I only handled battery, oil, tires, and teaching the new techs. When things got slow, I was the tire/battery warehouse guy and sole frieght unloader. There was a point where I broke down all out racks and organized everything for 2 work weeks straight because the people with the numberpads on their legs were coming to check our inventory. Even with all the other busy work, the other techs would still hand me work orders that wouldn't profit them while telling me the customer needs it done fast because they not trying to sit in the waiting room. When things got slower, I became the last lube tech and they cut my hours. I couldn't even afford the gas to come to work, so I told them I was leaving and couldnt afford to put in two weeks because it was a 30-40min drive one way. They still complained. It closed 5 years after I left.

The sad reality is not a lot of black men go to college or the trades! So you end up being the only black man surrounded by others! I have the same issue in corporate America. The only black people here are a few black women and Africans.
