Just getting in to the hobby with my 6 year old son. How do you know if it's an art rare? Do you just have the different cards memorized and know that it's a variant?
on the bottom of the card you can see little numbers and “special cards” will be a bigger number and have stars next to them for rarity so for example a rare card will say 210/150 so it’s a higher card number than the actual set! if you guys ever get an ETB also it explains the rarity rules in the players guide or you can look it up online as well :)

I only got a larvesta alt art and base sylveon stellar ex out of my entire ETB, it’s all luck
