    Really helpful that you went through your pricing. How do you work out your pay? Also really helpful to see your reflections, both prairie and negative. I haven't done a craft fair yet: I'm still a beginner, but I'm already hooked. 😊

    • @pieces_of_scrap
      @pieces_of_scrap  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      So I just determine how much I would like to be paid per hour, and then I determine how much time I spent making each item, and then my spreadsheet calculates how much money I would pay myself. To start, I'm just paying myself $10 per hour that I spend crocheting an item. Does that make sense?

    • @claireseymour4902
      @claireseymour4902 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pieces_of_scrap thank you. I think if I started selling, my items would be way too expensive as I'm still a slow crotcheter🙃.

    • @pieces_of_scrap
      @pieces_of_scrap  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm also probably undercharging for my time, but to be honest, I don't have a problem with that since I enjoy the process so much! I recommend that if you're really interested in selling your items, to start by just offering to sell to smaller crowds, like friends & family doing custom orders, and you can charge a flat fee for your service to them (: That's how I started a couple years ago (before my channel). I started offering custom sweaters around the holidays and would make them for my friends and family and charge what I paid for the yarn I used, shipping, and then a little bit more for my time. Around $40-45 a sweater. It's up to you though (: Just do what you think you can handle, if you're interested!@@claireseymour4902

    I’m glad you shared your journey with us. It’s a learning curve. I think you lost money because it was a small event, it was super hot, and you should up your prices with no fear about anything. I think it was good this first one was small because you can re-think, reprice and be better prepared for the next one.
    It’s hard work and you’re doing a good job. You will get better and better as you work. You’re learning! Definitely price every item individually . The groupings should be in your strategy when you price but not out there for customers. Use your spreadsheet to plan pricing and price each item accordingly. ❤ We all start somewhere and you’ll be fine.

    i loooooove the giant eyes on those plushies, it think it's cuter! than smaller eyes. 8mm is not half of 10mm though 😂 it's only 2mm smaller, if you want half the size then get 5mm eyes!

    • @pieces_of_scrap

      It's really easy to undersell yourself! Just make sure your prices are fair to you before you think of what other people will think! A lot of the time, when I undersell my items, it's because I'm trying to be fair to the other person, but really, I should be considering how much of my time and effort went into the item I'm selling and I should strive not to undercut myself!

    If I understand correctly, you made $25.00 on top of paying yourself for your time? That's not too bad! Have you thought about raising your prices a little bit and offering a cash/Venmo discount? It seems like your prices are very fair and there might be room to tack on a dollar or so. You probably don't need any advice - it seems like you are really on top of things 😁 Good luck!

    • @pieces_of_scrap
      @pieces_of_scrap  ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, no. If I count paying myself for my time, I lost $14, and it's mainly because I underpriced 2 items that I sold multiple of. I have thought about it, but I actually just build those costs into my price. I include taxes and any fees when I price my items. Thanks so much for your feedback (:

    I’ve been to places where I’ve had hardly any sales at all and lost money, the weather can make a huge difference (I live in the north of England and I wouldn’t be able to cope, I melt at 20°C - I just looked that up and it’s 68°F!).
    I’m excited to see what happens at your next few events.

Luckily we just got some rain here last night (I live in East Texas and the weather here has been hovering around 105-109 F for weeks now, and we haven't gotten rain here since mid-July) so hopefully that cools it down some. Thanks for the prep video. Always good to see how others are doing market prep. I'm not sure I understand your material costs. Are you having costs be the price of a whole skein of yarn, when you only use a small portion of that yarn or ?

    • @pieces_of_scrap
      @pieces_of_scrap  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Thanks for the comment! I actually have a formula in my excel sheet that calculates the price of the materials I used for me. I estimate about how many yards I used for a certain product, and then a formula calculates the cost of that amount of yarn. I could go more in depth in a future video to show how my excel sheet works!

    Thank you for sharing. Most people sharing their crochet market profits don’t remove their cost of materials. I wish there was a wholesale yarn shop or website it’s quit expensive. I know some other crochet businesses that sell at markets have a $5 SALE bin it basket. I think even if something isn’t on sale if there’s a SALE sign or a higher price is crossed out and a lower price is written in psychologically, people may be more interested in buying said item(s) I love your mushrooms and Those flowered bags are beautiful good luck.

    • @pieces_of_scrap
      @pieces_of_scrap  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately, no, Square doesn't directly get pulled in the spreadsheet (I wish tho!), I have to manually add them. At this market, I brought a notebook and kept track of all of my sales in order, that included what sold, how many of each (if applicable) and what form of payment the customer used. That way I could make sure I was tracking all of those sales. This is important because when I was calculating what I made from my sales at the market while I was at my booth, I calculated only my Square sales, and then later was pleasantly surprised that I forgot to include my cash, Venmo, Cashapp, and Zelle sales. That added quite a bit more money onto my gross sales total!@@janaegraber3907

      That is very true! I feel like I gained a lot of valuable knowledge for next time!
      My husband helped me create the spreadsheet I use from scrap. He works with Excel daily and has a lot more experience with it than I do.

      @@pieces_of_scrap you should do a how you make your videos like how you edit and what you record with I have always wanted to start a TH-cam channel but not a clue where to start 😊

    • @pieces_of_scrap
      @pieces_of_scrap  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would, but it's actually much too in-depth for me to explore right now, since this is not my full time job. The knowledge I have about filming and editing actually comes from years of experience from me going to college for it as well as it being my full time job to do those things. I currently record all of my footage using my phone, due to my camera being broken right now. I edit using Adobe Premiere, which is a software that is kind of expensive for people who are just starting out, so I don't think it would be helpful for me to go into it, plus there are already tons of videos out there about it! I hope this helps a little, sorry to disappoint.

    i'm tired of seeing makers, especially crocheters and knitters, underselling their work. When you undervalue yourself, you undervalue all of us

    • @pieces_of_scrap
      @pieces_of_scrap  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I don't think that's necessarily true. I think that some people just enjoy what they do and want to sell things just to make room for new projects to work on! There will always be plenty of people out there that will pay you for what you're worth, you just have to find those people. The more you market yourself, the better success you will have. Don't get too down on those people who "undersell" their work. It doesn't take away from what you do, especially if you have your own niche. I think that is what makes each maker unique, and what makes each maker valuable.

      Totally agree. Hard to compete with slave labour prices. Some people actually don't have the luxury to undersell their work because it's maybe the only skill they have and way to make money and aren't equipt to know how to find a way around this competition. If it's already just a hobby, then charge the money these things are worth and if it doesnt sell, donate or gift it. ❤
