Sarah Blackwood-beautiful, talented, gracious and the most down to earth pop star you could ever wish to meet, and I should know as I've met her several times. Just a lovely lovely lady with no airs or graces whatsoever.
hugely underrated pop song and band - bleak in their lyrics at times but relatable and with ridiculously catchy pop songs. I always think of them as 90s Synth pop Alan Bennetts!
Having had a lot of pop music - a lot of what was played on the radio most often - go bad for me from about very late 1990s/early 2000s and nowadays not really hearing on the radio a lot of the music from the 1990s that I like despite a lot of it having charted in the Top 40, it seems a lot charted lower than I imagined some of it, even by supposed pop music artists, or artists I'd imagine the songs were pop, reaching heights such as number 27, I have recently revised what I like and concluded that a lot of it, including this song, isn't actually pop music. This isn't a pop song. It may have been in the Top 40 but that doesn't mean it has shifted lots and lots of units and been really popular. This song, back in the days when we had sales only of physical media, was only in the Top 40 for two weeks and it peaked at number 20. One week at the bottom of the Top 20 is hardly "popular" music. It was then number 33 and then left the Top 40. This is not popular music. Popular includes songs that were number 1 one week, so sold perhaps a hundred thousand copies, then number 1 for another week, selling again another hundred thousand maybe, then perhaps number 2, still selling a further maybe 70,000 copies, then number 6, still selling quite some, then number 15, then number 20 - so selling more or less what this song did one week - then slower off the chart. In total maybe half a million copies sold over a number of weeks. This song peaking at number 20 - there were 19 more popular songs even at its height, a number 20 maybe selling 18,000 copies (I have no idea, these are just guesses) and then at number 33 the following week perhaps another 9,000 copies. So - maybe under 30,000 copies sold versus a song on the chart for many more weeks and in the Top 10 for a number of them, half a million. This is about 1/18th of the total sales of that - it isn't pop, even if it is in the Top 40 but then only for a couple of weeks, many of the songs I like were just one week at number 35, maybe 9,000 copies of a dance record bought by club DJs to play in the (specialist) clubs and just putting its head above number 41 for a single week, really more a specialist music song that just sells a few thousand copies as opposed to a hundred thousand for being in the Top 10 and significantly higher in the charts for several weeks. Number 37 for one week is probably a number one of the underground music scene that wasn't too popular to be commercial pop crossover and thus left the underground. Some songs can reach number 20 for one week, even if they are specialist music that doesn't get daytime radio playlist all week and is heard in daytime only on the Top 40 and th thanen for perhaps that one week - blink and you'll miss it and if you are a daytime radio listener, that didn't listen at night to specialist shows, when fewer people listen to the radio, and didn't happen to listen the one week it was in the charts, such as 'Invisible' by Tilt, then you likely won't even be aware the song exists even if it was Top 20. That isn't pop music, it is the top of the underground (and by 'underground', I don't mean songs that reached Top 5 of the charts in the early 2000s and were claimed to be underground garage, when they are pop music in the version most played on the radio and on the charts and need a garage remix that people are not referring to when talking of the song in the Top 5, such a remix (or the original and other remixes if the pop version is a remix) isn't what people generally know as the song that is POP music top 5 and not underground. This song, given that it was only in the Top 40 for two weeks and didn't get higher than Number 20, it is among the least to middle-successful songs in the charts, but many many more songs that went Top 10 shifted way more and are actually popular. There is no evidence that this song is popular, on just a few thousand sales perhaps at number 20 and then at number 33 and then even less at lower position number 43, its final week in the Top 100. It's not pop music - I would more call it indie, as a style of music, except it may or may not be on an independent label. It's production is loaded with different elements on top of each other, which is music of a type I usually really like, but I suspect to the mainstream audience comes across as noise. They never really bought it - they were buying Oasis instead, for several more weeks including more in the Top 10 than the total weeks this got at lower than number 19 every time, or buying even more Puff Daddy and Faith Evans, that got many more weeks in the Top 40 including many in the Top 5, or a Coolio song also way more popular and more weeks, Gala or Michael Jackson. They weren't buying Dubstar No More Talk in hundreds of thousands. "Stars" by Dubstar might be more of a pop song, although even that took a second release (after originally peaking at number 40 - that isn't pop music then, it's probably a few thousand copies - as opposed to hundreds of thousands each week a song is Top 3 or 4) - although even 'Stars' only peaked at number 15 and was in the Top 20 for just two weeks - it doesn't seem to be very popular at all, even if it was on the Top 40. But... albums? Perhaps. Did Dubstar's album shift? If it did, is there any evidence people bought it for 'Stars", to make that a pop song, still less any evidence they bought it for this?
@@radiocremebrulee4431 make it better was underrated for me. I Friday night was like the bridge from their previous two album to the maker it better sound. This year 2022 they ll release a new album.
Saw them live twice in the 90"s supporting The Lightening seeds at Manchester Apollo followed by a headline show at The Hop and Grape at Manchester Uni. Loved their songs and still do.
Oh, so nostalgic... accidentally found this again and immediately remembered how much I liked it. When she says "I'll make you feel better", the word "better" sounds like she actually means "worse" - so much power put into pronunciation :D But I'm not English, so maybe I don't understand.
увидел этот клип ребенком по телеку в 1997 году и так и не запомнил название, а песня в голове куском крутилась до этого момента буквально. Нашёл её спустя почти 25 лет!

Thanks for your comment. I've already forgot about this and you reminded me. Check also Not So Manic Now, that song has also something similar - long verses in lyrics that doesn't fit the rhythm. Some elements are present in other songs too.
I've actually worked it out - the naked guy with the beard & moustache is God. It does not get any more English than that, I loved it first time, it's sort of song you'd play on a Sunday afternoon while washing your car and your other half is thinking this is about her hhhhhh, a lot of explaining is likely 😍😂
Every now and then I like it when I hear an older Dubstar song I'm not so familiar with. Though that gets harder because I kind of love them so Dubstar music deprivation isn't the funnest 🤣
This is an underrated 90s gem.
They made so many wonderful songs in the 90s this included. ❤
Seeing and listening February 2025. 🎉😊
I think I could listen to Dubstar from here to eternity and never get bored.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
So say wel all. I first heard it in a record shop in Brussels and bought the CD-Single and became a fan
My personal favorite is Stars. I also got the cd after hearing it in a tv show way back then.
I can listen to this song for hours, I won't get bored !!
A brilliant 90s tune, even if it is underated, I ❤ it!

She looks & sounds very much like Susan Ann Sulley (Human League)
Stars was my favourite but this is a very close second, cheers pilgrims.
I loved Dubstar…I saw Dubstar live at The Riverside, Newcastle in 1990’s, Sarah Blackwood was sitting on a suitcase outside the venue ❤️❤️❤️!
One of my favorite Chris Cunningham videos, and a fucking great song... Very Pet Shop Boys sounding.
I loved this. I still have the original CD single with Unchained Monologue, La Boheme and Goodbye also on it.

The girl I fancied put me onto them. I never got the girl but she was worth it for Dubstar alone.
Good comparison!

Love this song. They we're always underrated.
A much under-rated band, it seems. And they sample Yes at the beginning of this track - kudos!
Hard to believe this tune will be 20 years old this June.
The best song ever... Im from Brazil and im happy to known this track and listen for all this years. Thanks Dubstar!
Love this song. Saw them live twice back in around 1997. They supported The Lightening Seeds
Such a lovely memory! I loved Dubstar so much! ❤
This song has haunting beauty.
So perfect, so above the time of their time
One of the best northern bands from the 90s. All 3 of their albams are classics.
I struggled with their last album but their fourth album "One" has some great moments.

Instantly takes me back. Great tune!
I bought this album back in the day, recommended by the owner of a record shop, and I had totally forgotten about it. It sounds so good.
I adore this song
I simply love her.

Wonderful

She says "bitter", not "better". The pronunciation seems normal to me (for a british at least, which I'm pretty sure she is).
I think it's "bitter", not "better", so maybe that explains it?

I've learned about them today after sending to a friend my forthcoming tune, they said it reminded them of Dubstar & Saint Etienne

In Austria they got no Airplay! But i loved them, like many bands from UK and Ireland.
Great song and fabulous catchy melody.
Brilliant
Reminds me of Human League's Susanne Sulley in looks and voice. Never seen the video before but bought the single.
Omg really though was thinking this last night
