    2 things....firstly you are utterly gorgeous. And secondly; did anyone else find it ironic, that during the conversation about ‘what dB level will damage your ears’ the lab technician was bashing away with a super loud dremel and zero ear protection! 😂😂😂

    Very important to make sure the OTO blocks are in correctly so there is no chance of "blow-by" from the impression material. A former colleague of mine in the hearing aid business had this happen and when he pulled the impression out the entire ossicular chain including the ear drum, malleus , incus and stapes came with it. Please make sure a trained professional takes the impressions!

    Champion Helmets does helmet reviews and comparisons where the quietest helmets are around 100 decibels at 130kph, so it really doesn’t matter how loud your exhaust is. Your hearing is being damaged just riding down the highway if the pipe is silent. My father has hearing aids and they are miraculous, but I don’t want them if I can avoid them.

    Be careful...
    I bought the CF Auto V2. First ride out was awful - worse than wearing no plugs. Turns out they had not made them correctly to fit.
    Got new impressions taken, and second set did fit but the noise suppression was a joke. At anything over 50 mph the wind noise was terrible.
    Got them to remake as CF Autoblock because I figured that would be maximum protection - They arrived but the wind noise was just as bad.
    I think they are flawed because the wind and turbulence drums on the large hard outer surface area and channels the noise into your ear.
    The CF Auto passive filter is just a nest of wire - has no affect. The V2 that they charge an extra £20 for is just a tiny sliding plastic cover over the passive filter - there was no difference whether open or closed.
    There are a right pain to fit, you need loads of lube (tiny tube is supplied) and a mirror! Getting your helmet on without disturbing their position is challenging. Trying to remove them is just as awkward and leave your ears sore trying to pry the things out.
    Going out for a day where you need to constantly put them in and out would be very frustrating. Foam pads are superior in every way from fitting, comfort and noise suppression.
    So after 9 months of back and forth I am still out of pocket and they refuse to refund claiming they are a custom made product. To be fair they have tried to resolve the issue but the products simply do not work, for me at least and am gobsmacked they refuse to refund on that basis. I was more than willing to pay the high price for them if they worked, but they don't.
    I've seen reviews raving about them, and maybe they are true reviews but ask yourself if you are willing to lose your money if they don't work for you.

    Rich was pretty decent in speccing these out for me today at the NEC. I needed something that would work as in ear monitors, whilst also being required to function at festivals and gigs as well as on the bike. Looking forward to getting mine in about a month since tinnitus and foam ear plugs are a bitch, but at the same time, listening to music with standard sony or sennheiser ear buds won't eliminate wind noise or filter out mid-high freq.

    Kate - great insight into how they're made and the people behind the product, do you listen to music while you ride? I commute 35miles each way daily, and music/radio is really important for me. I'm toying between in ear monitors and just ear plugs as I have a card freedom 4+ with the JBL helmet speakers.. do you think the plugs (rather than IEM) would be suitable enough for music through the helmet speakers?

    • @alanhassall
      @alanhassall 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      These ear plugs appear to have filters in them that allow a bit more sound through than a big hunk of solid silicone and they might work well with helmet speakers. The wind noise always bothers me. I have tried other ear plugs with speakers and haven’t had much success with them. The position of the speakers makes a big difference and I actually had to move mine forward by removing a bit of comfort padding in my Arai cheek pads. You can try the foam ear plugs as they can cut anywhere from 26 to 30 decibels before having custom ear plugs made. I finally gave up and went with universal in ear monitors with foam tips ($60 US). They plug in where the speakers plug in normally on Cardo units. Unfortunately, the IEM’s that I went with stick out enough that it makes it difficult to put the helmet on. There is room for them once the helmet is on. Custom speakers or IEM’s that are flush with your ears would be the best, but are often quite expensive.
