as a foreigner (without this card) everything I do is harder and takes longer, at least double the time if I'm lucky, maybe more if I'm not. I am constantly having to switch visas as most are only good for about one year. this costs a lot of time and money, whereas the five-star card I can get is good for 10 years. I can't buy imported goods from taobao. I have needed special items from my home country and have just had to go without them (until I met my husband and he helped!). I can't directly board trains by just swiping my passport like Chinese people can do with their IDs, I have to wait in very long lines so I always have to factor in more time before the train departs. I have been turned away from staying in hotels because they aren't sure how to process foreigners' passports (it's never due to discrimination, and always has to do with the paperwork side of things). This has been especially difficult when traveling in remote areas. One time I was turned away from multiple places in one day due to being in a place that rarely saw foreigners pass through. The place that finally took me was the most expensive in the area. RIP my bank account. Functions on apps are limited for me regarding payments (think transfers, sending money abroad). Some things I try to pay for while out and about (or online sometimes) require a mainland ID and there's no other way to pay. and hopefully you don't need to get a new passport number while in China because that means everything you've ever registered for needs to be changed. and you have to go in person to do it all (ask me how I know lol). and there's way more. But I am surprised that even "foreigners" married to locals do not have special visas like a "dependent" visa and still have to apply for the yearly visas. But now, to encourage more foreign tourists, I see China is more relaxed in its procedures for visa applications. Used to have to submit pages of forms. China is also more accepting of international credit cards (eg., the International Alipay ) and the use of cash ... but these are probably in the major tourist cities. Good luck in getting your 身份证. We’ve been married for just two years and are much older than you and your husband so unfortunately we have no kids together. This winter we will travel to China which will be my first time there. I can’t wait to go as it will be my first time meeting my Chinese family. I want to get one of these ID cards for myself but I’m sure it will take some time. I’m seriously thinking about moving there and having a life there too. Should I visit the Chinese consulate here in the US to apply for a marriage related travel visa and possibly this ID card? What do you and your husband do for money and how do you balance work and life commitments (earning/costs, time, stress, etc.)? I think many of these videos are excellent, but we also really need a video on such fundamental aspects, just like the cost of living video you did!
There was some train police officers once caught a woman having a baby in her arm, in a train across southwestern China few years ago, they found her extremely calm and playing with her phone all the time without paying much attention to the baby, so they checked and found out that woman was a kid trafficker, I think the new law is being there for one, to prevent this kind of crime.
Soo nice, cannot get for our kids, our kids didn't fully qualify to be both Swedish and Chinese so no travel document, and no ability for them to choose later, maybe ok but also a problem 😅
It’s a weird feeling when watching foreigners on TH-cam enjoy the hard work of the Chinese people, especially foreigners from hostile countries like mine, mostly western. After all the grief the Middle Kingdom has gone through in the hands of these countries for more than 150 years. Now their descendant get to come over and reap the benefits of the Chinese toil, it’s strange to watch.
For all the bad blood between them, the West did bring new ideas, new tech, ... to China that completely transformed China and much of the world. So better to focus on the positive.
The Westerners who enjoy Chinese life are not those who hate and rob China, they appreciate China. The hardworking Chinese people also welcome those who are friendly and conscientious.
