I paced these two machines running TOGETHER once through Virginia from Lynchburg down to Salisbury when they were going 'home' to Alabama for their annual maintenance routine. Wonderful video!! Thanks!
Im one of those sentimental steam enthusiasts, born 100 yrs too late! Don't ask me why,but I can visualize Al Gore yelling the words"CARBON FOOTPRINT!?!?!?" I say the darker the smoke, the better the ride! If it ain't coal fired,it ain't s***! Even the lokies converted to oil, seem to upset me! But God I love every last one of them! Thanks for posting this
That 1218 is a real beauty. I just got the DVD "Pillars Of Smoke In The Sky" which shows them battling up the Blue Ridge with long coal trains from a crew point of view.
Thanks so much for this footage of the steam locos. My dad and granddad were both engineers on N&W. My dad worked until he was 75. I guess there is no footage of any of the 2100 series running from Roanoke to Shenandoah available to be seen. My dad drove those.
I have a few of these tapes left. Once they are gone, they will be as gone as the trains in the tapes. Visit the web site to order a tape for that true train collector.
It is a poor idea, and costs alot of money. Both 3985 and 844 are historical oil burners. They have been oil for a while, since 1945, part of a conversion project by UP. 1218 and 611 have always been coal burners, and I have high doubts they would ever do that, as it would mean Lots of money, and new parts.
These are not "Old Steam Days of Railroad" tapes, but rail fan photo's. Norfolk & Western Y6B's never pulled passenger consignments. Just miles and miles of coal freight.
Lol, well the A class was the most powerful, that is what you see in teh video, the others were for slow coal drags, the A, highspeed, high load, the best railroad companies could build
And it's a shame that the A wasn't done with its overhaul when NS cancelled the program. It could have been in amazing condition if the program lasted a few more years
@calinkus steam provided the traction power, and speed necessary to stage troops and equipment, when we had the greatest infrastructure in the world. While steam engines, may have required more frequent maintenance, and larger crews,it would impact the sour economy, and revive the coalfields in the Midwest, where I'm from! The railroads received land grants,as they were set up,and could do the same,to justify the created jobs. Jobs that won't be going to Mexico or China! Let's just fix America, and
@VFB1210 - And the US has more coal than any country in the world...we actually have over a quarter of the world's known coal reserves but yet we refuse to use it despite new clean-coal technologies.
calinkus; if the world runs out of fossil fuel, there wont be any steam trains!! Because coal is fossilized forest! Love the film; steam engines of any kind are beautiful to see in action, but steam is not going to re-conquer tthe railroads.
@6woodland What on earth makes you think it is a Y6B cause it aint. What you have here is old footage of N&W 1218 "A" and 611 "J" Both locos are no longer in steam. 1218 Was undergoing an overhaul when Norfolk & Southern pulled the plug on its steam program. I dought it will ever steam again as many of its parts were stolen after it was announced.
I know it would take massive amounts of cash to restore 1218. Are there any groups out there looking to make this happen? Or is it to cost ineffective to even try? Hopefully the friends of 261 can get 265 out of IRM and restore her. Long live 261!!!!
Hey there. I love Union Pacific steam locomotives, along with all steam locomotives in general. I was curious, if you could, could you try and convince Union Pacific to bring one of the "Big Boys" out of retirement? We need at least one "Big Boy" to still be in service. If you could try and talk them into it, I, and many other steam locomotive fans, would greatly appreciate it.
there is a VHS tape dealing with the comparisons,MARK ONE VIDEO PRODUCTIONS i think,in this video UP3985 and N&W 1218 A CLASS are compared and overall 1218 is marginally stronger,UP 3985 is longer by a few inches and as the narrator says "the comparisons can go forever.
@calinkus .... Fix America and bring back the jclass,Challengers, and Allegheny locomotives! Jobs that stay in America! The Middle East could choke on their greed, and oil! Where do I sign?
The original copyright owner shows no interest in converting these wonder videos from tape to DVD at this time. As it stands, we own all of the last copies made on VCR tapes. We have permission to show them in museums and to promote the sale of what is left in inventory.
@Rowzdower69ify Coal fired stream engine trains, in my opinion made a great contributtion to winning WW II. The moved men and machines to the sea ports for deployment. I believe if the world should run out of fossil fuel tomorrow, you would see coal steam return so fast that even Al Gore would be found at the ticket agent in line waiting.
Wonderful, but hate the hooty calliope-sounding whistle. Couldn't they have respectable multi-chime whistles? Glad to see a clean stack. My great uncle, a steam locomotivengineer would have been ashamed of black smoke coming from his stack.
Understood. I HATE them. Nothing better than a masculine, melodic multi-chime whistle. I'd like to talk to the idiot at N&W as to why they have such whistles. People can be deaf a discreet frequencies. If it happened to be this frequency, it could be a problem. Multi-chime whistles are better also for that practical reason. What is leaking at 1:35? At 5:38 what is venting under the tender? Thank you.

That's were I used to work. Former Steam Dept Employee
This is depressing...
I miss those things.
Damn! What a beautiful beast!!
If it is coming from the Pistons, the cylinder cocks are opened by the engineer to exhaust condensed water. Usually when starting or at low speeds.
Look at those beautiful giants! Thanks for sharing
That 1218 is a real beauty.
I just got the DVD "Pillars Of Smoke In The Sky" which shows them battling up the Blue Ridge with long coal trains from a crew point of view.
i love these monsters, thank you very much for posting these!
Indeed, who knows
Fantastic sights and sounds - and filming. Way to go!

Picture this;
the A, and the challenger type in a race both carrying 3 miles of freight.
ho-lee-shit!
I have a few of these tapes left. Once they are gone, they will be as gone as the trains in the tapes. Visit the web site to order a tape for that true train collector.
Brings back lots of great memories.
That first clip of the J really got to me. I absolutely love that engine.
i got to get this!!!!!
danke for the wonderfool video
great video of a great loco!
Love them hooters
Awesome! thank you!
Amazing clips. Such beautiful engines.

whats different from the challenger and the y series engine? which one is stronger? thanks! great video and awesome sound! i love it!

Meh... Alot of time... for 1218, years maybe. 611 maybe a matter of months, as she is completely 'preped' just needs new stuff.

@VFB1210 I was thinking about a small nuk reactor producing lots of steam. Of course the smoke stack will not be needed.
@VFB1210 - And the US has more coal than any country in the world...we actually have over a quarter of the world's known coal reserves but yet we refuse to use it despite new clean-coal technologies.
nice film very nice!!!!

The J is in a league of its own, as well as CO 614, it is a shame that those engines are not running. They are both in great condition

@6woodland So true. However, than are in color with sound. You can't have both.
or 610?
The N&W Class A has more HP than any of the Challengers, including the UP 3985. I work fro the UP an am very familiar with the 3985.
Ah, yes that's it; starting and low speeds. Thanks for the info! I always wondered about that. :)
Will 1218 ever run again?
It will one day. All we can do is hope for it.
I know it would take massive amounts of cash to restore 1218. Are there any groups out there looking to make this happen? Or is it to cost ineffective to even try? Hopefully the friends of 261 can get 265 out of IRM and restore her. Long live 261!!!!

the class a's had the same wheel arangement as the up challengers but they do look bigger!

+kevin brooks the UP Challengers were 4-6-6-4, while the A was 2-6-6-4

I sure hope you're wrong, THE 611 IS COMING BACK.
@gaycowboy Thanks, and here it is,7 months later, and fuel costs continue to rise!
@cascadesmelloando
i agree 110% its to bad that J611 never got a "hooter" whistle, it sounds *gasp* waay to Southern.

@meguell3 -- At least we have the video memories.
funny thing is any road that runs articulated steam that engine is the most powerful on their roster :P
How come the steam comes out of the sides only sometimes?
MAX & RUBY
Beautiful shots, I doubt we will ever see the 1218 run again though..
America must end its love affair with oil and embrace coal. Leave black gold for black coal!
Do you Drive these things? I didn't know that there was a steering wheel in them!!!!!!!
