Tessie my family is from Puerto Rico. Its a tropical island. I learned at a very young age to always rinse the rice several times before cooking for this very reason.

I've started buying a couple extra cans of food and items a week. My husband and i watch the seasons carefully, and we both feel like it's the middle of August and not July. the crops went in 3 weeks late but appear to be several weeks ahead. Farmers around here have said they expect an early frost and winter, and we haven't had a real bad snow for several seasons. We are due. Blessings

I only found bugs once in my food storage. It was horrible, and I didn’t need a magnifying glass to see them! I hope that I never find that again. So glad that you didn’t find any.

It's a great time to run through food inventory ahead of autumn and winter bucket finds are fab. We found some lovely roast beef meals in the freezer i had totally forgotten about. With the whole fsmily being sick the past week it was so very welcome. ❤

You can vacuum seal stuff in jars. Cheaper than Mylar bags

I had an elderly woman who told me to do it by what you would cook at one time. IE, with rice, if you make 2 cups of rice then portion it out as you normally would if you left it on the shelf.
It is something that has been very helpful in the long run. Then take each of those bundles and put them inside your 5-gallon bucket. Yes you may have to have more buckets than what you normally would if you pour a whole 20 to 50 lb bag of rice in a bucket. It will cut down on any waste that you may have in the future by having meal prepared bags.

I have a lot of 2 and 5 gallon buckets! I have lids that twist off making my buckets easier to open. I have half gallon mason jars that I store for house use. When my jar gets empty I go refill it from my bucket and I rotate my buckets. I brought all my buckets with us 1800 miles when we moved! I have never had any problems with my food in the buckets.
I have white rice, salt, sugar, flour, different types of dry beans like pinto, black, and Mayocoba. Lentils, pancake mix, powdered milk, baking soda and powder, potato flakes and who knows what else lol. I also have those 30 year cans of dehydrated foods like eggs, butter, honey, bacon, and cheese. I can't remember what else! And spices! I keep my spices in totes. Whenever they go on sale I stock up. I love using different spices for all my dishes I make! Sometimes the more the merrier. When I lived in Washington we had a store called WinCo! I loved that store! They had a huge bulk section and great prices! You could get stuff like smoked paprika by the pound for like next to nothing so I would buy a lot to fill up a mason jar lol than I seal it with my gadget!

Not sure if its still ok to store this way but I'm still storing my dry goods in paper lunch bags sealed in seal a meal bags then into food buckets. Advice??

It’s good to buy food in bulk or good deals to be prepared. People who don’t prepare will be looking towards the people who have prepared. Looks like you found some cool soap making supplies. I want to try making soap. Any ideas how to make without lard.

I really do not know I got all of my rice for free a couple years ago from someone that worked at a warehouse and the bag had gotten ripped and it was a skid of it and they were giving it out to numerous people
Wow, you guys really go through a lot of bar soap! I order goats milk soap from Creamery Creek about three times a year. It’s just me though…. My husband doesn’t use bar soap. But I use appx. 8 bars a year or so.

Are most soaps made with lye? How is it on your skin when it is made with lye?
Yes basically all soaps were made with lye is added to any kind of fat it neutralizes it even the store bought soap has lye in it
