My grandfather died this morning. This video was oddly comforting. Thanks John & co., for being a pleasant distraction during so many hard moments in my life.
Hi Complexly, great episode; however, i was bummed to see not much about how other culture's view of this have changed over time. Was a more christian focused episode.
Great episode! I wish, though, that you’d been able to spend some time discussing heaven and hell from an Islamic point of view, as the Islamic conceptions are internally quite diverse and shouldn’t be conflated with Jewish and Christian conceptions
When my mom died last week, I revisited the CrashCourse "Perspectives on Death" video from years ago because it brought me comfort when my dad died in 2019. Even though my mom and I aren't/weren't religious, the timing of this video is impeccable and has brought me a small sense of comfort. (Thanks for helping me get through both my parents' deaths, John)
The description of the "afterlife" in the Epic of Gilgamesh is that you just die without fanfare. "Dust is your food and clay is your bread" is poetic language that can also be said as "for thou art dust and to dust thy shalt return"...
The opening here just made me think of the giant sign coming into Indiana from the north that just says "Hell is Real"....a little on the nose I thought.
This is such an amazing series and I appreciate you guys willing to dive into these topics. I appreciate how blurred the lines are in real life and how willing you are to still give import to the wide blend of beliefs people hold despite that.
I guess we all will found out. Eventually. But since everyone dies alone - it is a very personal experience - even if mutliple people die in an accident e.g. plane crash, every one of them experiences their own death, that cannot be shared with the others. Death is the ultimate personal experience anyone can have. An experience that we all literally take to the grave.
I would like to see the view of death and 'afterlife' from a non-Abrahanic religious perspective. What about those who are Pagan/Wiccan, Agnostic and Atheistic?? Maybe I missed those videos, so I'll have to take a look.
I found this episode so well done and interesting! That said, I am curious about how the western christian view of the afterlife differs from that of other cultures/religions - would be great if this series expanded on that
I feel like John had a lot of fun making this episode. And you know what, I also had a lot of fun watching this! I feel like this is a close return to form that made me fall in love with Crash Course in the first place.
why the Islamic view is not presented since you mentioned the other Abrahamic religions it would have been nice to know how the death and afterlife view emerged From Jewish to Christian to Islamic view ?
On one hand, I learned things I didn't know about the afterlife (and hell literature is my focus as a historian) - thanks for that. On the other hand I wonder how Zoroastrian/Iranian heaven and hell were omitted, given that it's the origin of Abrahamic heaven and hell. Was it less influencial than Assyrian politics.
Devil's Advocate opening was fantastic! I award you one internet point! (Is it worth anything? No. But the Devil's Advocate needs to compile some more cringe, so...)
The number of metal bands from Ohio that have taken pictures with the "HELL IS REAL" sign is kind of funny. Edit to add, he mentioned Gahanna! I live there. It's not so bad.
With the Devil’s Advocate wearing a track suit and sunglasses and with all the jokes about Ohio, this might be Crash Course’s most midwestern video ever.
I only just realized John was playing the devil’s advocate, I though he was played by some other guy also I just wanted to say in case anyone was interested I was raised Jewish and my dad said the Jewish view is not to care about the afterlife but care about what we could to good in this world, of course not Jews agree with that but a decent amount do, believing this life is what matters and not a test for the next
Nothing happens when we die. There's no reason to believe or assume that any kind of sentience is possible beyond the physical death and decay of our brain. No reason to assume that death isn't perfectly symmetrical to the nothingness prior to our birth and the physical maturity of our brain.

Very Jewish and Christian episode would’ve love to look at other afterlifes more
Absolutely loving this series! The info is great, but the intentional avoidance of bias is what makes it next level to me!

these intros are peaking 👌
The opening here just made me think of the giant sign coming into Indiana from the north that just says "Hell is Real"....a little on the nose I thought.
And then he references a very similar sign 2 minutes later :)
I like how John Green referred to his The Universe Podcast from last year at the end of this episode 🤩
This is such an amazing series and I appreciate you guys willing to dive into these topics. I appreciate how blurred the lines are in real life and how willing you are to still give import to the wide blend of beliefs people hold despite that.
Love you so very much John Green! Never change
I love John's humor...
My favorite version will always be Chidi's 🌊🌊🌊
Thank you for picking on Ohio. Michigan here. 😊

Devils advocate jumpscare at the start. Top tier content
This was fascinating! Thank you.
Well, you can conceive of infinity, but you certainly cant count to it!
As a child of the 80s, I'm surprised John didn't mention the Carlislism view.
That, you know... Heaven is a place on Earth

5:42 - No John, Ohio is the Florida of the Midwest
(Context: I am from Ohio)
Time mark 11:33 to 11:40 🤯 we live in a finite universe but can conceive of infinity! You can think about that forever 😊
I feel like John had a lot of fun making this episode. And you know what, I also had a lot of fun watching this!
I feel like this is a close return to form that made me fall in love with Crash Course in the first place.
That last scene... Bullseye. Right in the feels. Thanks!!
Ive setled on the thought that im following my loved ones even if it leads no place special.
Well, that clears that up.
As an Ohioan, i have never felt so heard as this.
Graduating class memories be like 0:15
This came up on my subscribed right after reading looking for Alaska and I feel like we’re gonna be right back in Dr. Hyde’s class

His humor helps this heavy topic. He’s hilarious. I’ll always love Crash Course

John seemed in the zone for this one. Death is kinda his thing after all
Wow, that was a really long Policy Genius ad read.
I'm going to hard disagree that the Christian concept of Hell had no connection to the Graeco-Roman concept of Hades.
My daily pondering
Good content
That was great! John makes an excellent devil's advocate. Thanks
Devil's Advocate opening was fantastic! I award you one internet point! (Is it worth anything? No. But the Devil's Advocate needs to compile some more cringe, so...)
John green you have a great narrating voice
John's suit and shirt today is really nice
You forgot the Belinda Carlislecentric point of view that "heaven is a place on earth."
Wonder how many people think we just stop functioning and our "hard drive" breaks and we cease to exist? Like completely, no soul, no afterlife?
As a Floridian I describe Ohio as Boring Florida
Pretty much the same thing that was happening before I was conceived I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The number of metal bands from Ohio that have taken pictures with the "HELL IS REAL" sign is kind of funny.
Edit to add, he mentioned Gahanna! I live there. It's not so bad.
Do we not “go to the thought bubble” anymore around here?
Thanks for pronouncing "Gahanna" right, at least. :v
As one born and raised in Ohio, I approve this message!
There is also one of those signs in northwest Indiana off of 65 too 😂
Thank you.
Theory I developed over the years. The faiths of the world are a multi-lane highway, all going to the same final resting place of the soul.
not the sign between cincy and cbus
whats up with the hell sign???
Yeah from Florida we know.
This series is spectacular
Hell is dying without being able to know how the future will be
boutta catch a flight back to Gahanna, OH, from…Florida 🥲
I’m an Ohioan and these Ohio jokes made me laugh out loud. I assume you saw that one particular sign during driving during college? 😂
"This is The Bad Place!"
Heyyyy, Chat! It's me, the Devil's Advocate!
I'm here to argue about basic facts and religious practices!
- Devil's Advocate, probably
The state of Michigan endorses John Green's statements about Ohio.
Well that escalated quickly...
I like how he didn't look to the side when talking about Ohio
With the Devil’s Advocate wearing a track suit and sunglasses and with all the jokes about Ohio, this might be Crash Course’s most midwestern video ever.
I kinda like Devil's Advocate John. He's got style!
Nobody knows what happens when you die, that is a fact of life
A Florida man from Ohio 😆 that close up was real lmao
After death your body becomes stardust - simple.
you didnt mention islam and how it represents the afterlife.
Life After Death is a real thing; decomposition involves tons of microbes and stuff. :)
I can actually answer the question "what happens when you die": We don't know.
I wish I believed in a life after death 😕
Hell is real…at least Hell, Michigan is.
I only just realized John was playing the devil’s advocate, I though he was played by some other guy
also I just wanted to say in case anyone was interested I was raised Jewish and my dad said the Jewish view is not to care about the afterlife but care about what we could to good in this world, of course not Jews agree with that but a decent amount do, believing this life is what matters and not a test for the next
We know the Ohio thing is definitively true because John didn’t switch cameras.

The theologians ain’t gonna like this
Nothing happens. You're dead.
