Supers sounded boxed in like they were coming from a cone. 85th & 80's in broad terms were similar with the 80's sounding a bit smaller didn't have as much width and air as the 85th. You wouldn't go wrong with either of thw two. TBF to the Supers maybe they sound better in person as the mic might bot be able to pick up all the nuances it has to offer. Bigger isn't always better BUT these Wharfdales give you a TON of bang for your hard earned money.
Thanks for the test. I own the 85TH and can confirm that they sound fantastic. For the price, I think this is an unbeatable product. Listening to music with these speakers is simply fun. It doesn't matter whether I listen to metal, electro, pop or vocals. These things simply do it all. And the retro design is exactly my thing. Sure, there are definitely better speakers out there. But are they available for a good 800 Swiss francs for the pair?
Super denton obviously. Because of best midrange that give more body to instrument and voice and is bit closer to real sound. 85 sound clearer. Because of obviously more pronounced V curve, most people automaticly think is better, more revealing. But this is more artificial, than realistic. This artificial boost can cause many songs will sound thin, a lot of sound will be too edgy and fatiguing if you listen at louder volume and bad recordings. But also V curve have some advantage. 85 is probably good for nearfield low level listening. V curve act like loudnes button from some receivers. V curve can also contribute to less mid frequency boomines in small spaces. So for nearfield low level listening i would choose 85. For bigger space, when you can put speakers more out from the wall and want to listen a bit louder i would prefer Super denton. But overall Super denton is best speaker here, and denton 80 is no match for other two.
what's wrong with the 80s potentially adding a sub or for near field listening ? .. thought they sounded balanced against the reference .. but they were missing some low end extension .. I'd say they did fine for what they are.
@shipsahoy1793 Absolutely fine in a small bedroom environment. I have everything the 80's paired with Marantz 2270 and occasionally switch it out with the Sony STR7045. They are much closer than you think. In fact, I'd give the slightest LESS than a razor thin edge to Sony. But both make these speakers sing. Plenty of bass for near field listening and musical.
what was the amp used ? I think the microphones should be cross pointed X over one another to get a more human stereophonic image - that's what they taught me at sound engineering college for recording live ensemble sounds . Appreciate what you do though thank you :)
I've had the Denton 80 for four years. Lovely sound. But do better with a powerful amp and a subwoofer to fill out the bottom and create dimensionality. Nor do you want a source that is too congested or treacly.
You also need a track with a good male and one with a female vocal. Our ears are best in judging human voices. Most music is with vocals anyway. The one you played was not so good. These wharfedales center their quality around the mids. We hear differences here but we can not judge their true sounds. Fun video but almost useless.
I thought the same thing ! the 80s seemed to be the most balanced and similar to the reference minus a bit of low end extension.. the super Dentons were kind of veiled and the 85s were the most in your face, probably from an elevated response somewhere in the upper mids and treble area.

Thx for the test. I'm shocked how different Super Dentons sound from the rest. This is a 3-way speaker probably that is why.

Super Denton to my ears. Thanks for the recording.
Great test, again. Keep up the good work.
Denton 85 🥇🏆
Yep. 👍

85...Best All-rounder !
Agreed! 👍
Same
somehow i feel the super denton sound a bit boxed in, not very open.
Veiled
Within youtube limitations … good work. Thank you

Audiolab 9000N streamer and 9000A amplifier
Interesting, will try look that up :)
Super Denton - the best👍🏻
In most of the cases, through MY headphones - the 80 sounds best of the trio 🤷♂🤷♂
85 for me
Agreed! 👍
The 80 for me
A real sonic review. All the other sites just unbox and talk for 12 minutes.
Denton 80th pour moi aussi !
80TH
The rock track sounded very weak on the super...is this normal?
Was thinking the same… the 80th oddly had the best recreation albeit had the least amount of treble. The others sounded hollow in comparison…

How powerful?
@@itisjustacomment I found that an amp capable of 100 watts per channel and greater provides superior dynamics.

Super denton are much more full across the bandwidth .
What a great comparison!!!
The super is awful. 85th clear winner. The super was very veiled. Total lack of detail.
Seems the 80 sounds closest to the source😊

Its the 80's
Awful recording quality, it really doesn’t do the Dentons justice.
This is a not real Dentons sound, dont lissen this video. Real Dentons sound having much more Magic and Sound stage.
??? Magic?
The playlist is so naive and favors speakers with "v" sound.

lol…exactly what I was thinking. I love Wharfedales, but still got a chuckle out of this.
To be honest none sound good.
Microphone is shit
