I Love Akumal. It’s a great place to use as “your base” being as it is close to Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cozumel, and the ruins of Chichén Itzá. It is also a very safe place. On the downside I have experienced two negatives: 1: Beach access was limited as most of the Bay Area where we stayed were Private. There are a couple of public beaches but they were quite crowded and forget a long stroll along the shore. 2: For the past three or four consecutive years the Sea Turtle sighting period has coincided with sargasso seaweed landings that make swimming difficult, have a rather nasty odor as they rot on the sand, and make the whole beach view ugly. Hopefully the sargasso problem will correct itself. But private developments with limited public access to Beach doesn’t seem to be a priority for most politicians, neither st local or state level.
