    Needing help or time IS NOT WEAKNESS!. It took me 18 months of therapy to believe that and I often must remind myself that it’s true. I look forward to the return of your heady-er content at a time when I too have the bandwidth to consume it. It is a crazy busy time of year and we’d all do well to give ourselves GRACE to just be where we are. Thanks for always sharing when you owe me nothing. I appreciate you and your work.

    Oh Hannah, girl, you are doing just great. First off all, your hair is BOMB ! I love it, it makes me want to overcome my forever long fear of the hairdresser and get something done ! Second of all, I look forward to you receiving the Paloma Wool sweater, everything she does is amazing and I love seeing her brand get support outside of Europe ! Finally, and most importantly, you dont owe us anything, dear. You do you, life gets in the way, as it does, and you really don't have to account for your decisions to us, at least I don't think you do, ever. We are lucky for your presence here and will take what you can give. If it starts to keep you up at night, well... it's not worth it. You put so much work into it, I truly want it to bring you joy. Anyways. Rant over. Love you, love your channel, Sending you loads of positive vibes 💓

    Hannah, “please remember to take extra good care of yourself so you can be the most effective version of yourself as you do your work in the world”. Maybe not making these “spicy” videos is what it means to take extra good care of yourself right now. You’re certainly not letting any of us down!❤️
    Also, on an unrelated note, you’re seriously inspiring me to cut my hair haha!

    This is such an interesting video Hannah - I’m not sure if this is useful for me to say as I don’t know you, but might be an interesting point for discussion. Do you think the way you describe beating yourself up about not meeting all your project goals you set for yourself is linked in to a wider worldview you have about work? From watching your videos for a while now I have always felt that we have quite different views about work.
    For example, in your outro, the idea that it is important to take good care of oneself /so that/ you can be effective at your work sits in contrast to my own personal view on why taking care of oneself is important, which is essentially that each person has an innate value separate from what they can produce or achieve, and deserves to be as healthy and happy as they can be as an end in itself. I’m not saying that you don’t think that, but your outro has always inspired a complex reaction in me for this reason. I’ve also found it interesting how the opportunity for women to work unimpeded seems to be a major focus of your feminism.
    I suppose I hope you remember to take extra good care of yourself full stop, and that you don’t feel self care is only justified as a means to an end to allow yourself to pour out more of yourself into projects. I apologise if that seems too directive from a stranger on the internet, but I really enjoy how you examine things that other people have said in videos etc, for example as you did in your holy grail video, so I hope it is okay for me to say.
    I hope you feel proud of how much you have achieved with your TH-cam channel, and able to freely make choices about what and how often to post.

      awesomelyizzy I know this comment was for Hannah, but I just want to say thank you so much for offering this perspective. I’ve spent a large portion of my life struggling to disentangle my idea of self-worth from my levels of productivity. I am still working on finding ways to feel worthy outside of the work I can do, and your comment helped put that into words I’ve struggled to find for so long. It was something I needed to see. Also, I thought your analysis of the perspective Hannah projects on her channel was thoughtful and valuable. Thank you so much for sharing!

      I agree Genie J , as a wife and mother with no paycheck of my own, I consider my "work" to include the mundane, cooking, cleaning, etc..., but more importantly to nurture, teach, and enrich others lives :)

    • @awesomelyizzy
      @awesomelyizzy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Genie J and nosmallwonder.etsy.com
      I definitely agree with you both about defining work more broadly, and I agree that that seems to be how Hannah defines it too. I still think it’s important to take care of ourselves for ourselves and find self worth outside of all of these kinds of work though. For example, nosmallwonder, the work you do in raising your children is vital and so valuable, but personally I believe that you shouldn’t only take good care of yourself so that you can nurture your children, but because you yourself are important and deserve to be as happy and healthy as possible.

      I get the heebie jeebies everytime Hannah starts her sign-off catch phrase and have to rush to mute or stop the video because it just rubs me the wrong way so much. It almost sounds vaguely threatening and robotic - be the *most effective* version of yourself so you can do *more work*.
      A lovely video could be Hannah talking through alternate coping/caring mechanisms where they are not seen as optimizing efficiency, but improving wellbeing.

    • @awesomelyizzy
      @awesomelyizzy 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Ohtherain I do know what you mean - although I have less of a strong reaction myself it is a phrase that doesn't sit well with me. I wonder if it may be in part a culture clash for me, because unlike Hannah I'm not American.

    Hannah!!! The only true promise you ever made to all of us, was that you didn't know where your projects were going to take you, but that you would bring us along for the ride. You have delivered above and beyond by always being your honest, vulnerable, funny, beautiful self. (As an aside, I have a background in corporate supply chain inclusion and sustainability, so had some sense that you might have hit some challenges that required a pause and re-plotting.) I am constantly grateful for what you share with all of us. Keep taking extra good care of yourself. (The hair is gorgeous, btw.)

    Wow, something you said got me to thinking about what a gendered issue overspending really is. Women are encouraged to overspend at every turn, yet we are also the butt of many jokes for falling for that encouragement. The more we can back away from those ruts, the more free we are to make choices that support our own goals/purpose.

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      this is SO true. Corporations are specifically trying to disempower WOMEN by making us feel like we have to spend our money to be better women. It's a feminist issue!

      Yes X10000000! I was just thinking this last night before seeing this video. It’s a system that is stacked against us. It’s very easy for women to get stuck in the shopping trap. We are already set up to make less, and yet we are expected to always think we need to improve our image and our appearance. I’m so tired of it. It’s finally gotten to the point where it makes me feel sick and I feel like the only way to fight it is a no buy year. 💛

    I really appreciate you talking about wanting to take on so many things and and feeling like you cannot do everything to the best of your abilities. I feel like part of being a creative person means that there are always new projects we want to start, but to do everything with the quality we want is just not realistic. I’m learning how to concentrate my efforts, and go for depth instead of width. And not judging myself if I cannot do eeeeverything! It’s definitely a new change for me! Good luck and sending happy creative vibes ~

  • @AlisonBurtt

    I don't know if this helps or not, but I started a new business this year and one thing I've learned (haha learned okay AM LEARNING) is that I don't have to do everything every day. And generally speaking, in my head if nowhere else, I am always doing everything every day unless I actively stop and just do one thing. So I have a suggestion for your unmade videos. Make them in parts. Maybe don't even post them in parts (or do, just not extensively planned parts). But do the part you can make today (logistically, emotionally) and make just that part. On camera, on paper, for literally five minutes, wherever you make stuff. Not all the things. One thing. Take extra good care of yourself, Hannah! No one wants you miserable from putting pressure on yourself. You're amazing in every way and it's okay to give yourself credit for taking the tiny bites you *can* chew instead of agonizing over the pile of stuff you can't. You already know this of course, but at least for me in this stage, I find I need to give myself daily (sometimes hourly) reminders 🙈

    Dear Hannah, I am new to your Chanel, and I just have to say thank you.
    You have been such an inspiration to me as I prepare for my no but year.
    I’ve know for sometime that I had to change my spending habits, but every year I’d still shop, “just one more bag, these shoes are on sale, I’f I had another coat...” somehow those items would make me feel complete, just this one more thing.
    I can say at age 40, I have bought everything. I have literally gone through ever brand, and sparkly thing, and it’s somehow it’s never enough.
    I do love fashion and enjoy getting dressed, but it’s gotten to the point of an addiction, rather than a joy my life. Your videos have said some really helpful things that have really woken me up.
    I don’t say this lightly, but I didn’t grow up with money, and I grew up with someone who was both physically abusive and verbally abusive. That family member has long been out of my life, but that need to show the world I am a good/fancy/wealthy person through my wardrobe (after being a kid being told every day I was horrible) has made me feel worse than better.
    I have a husband and two beautiful sons now, and we live in a home filled with love and peace. As a kid I could never even imagine what it would be to grow up and not have someone screaming at you all the time... so why do I choose to spend my free time shopping, when I have everything I need?
    Anyway, it makes me feel sick to not appreciate what I have in my life. I need to use this year to let go of the past. It’s done. I can’t change anything that happened before, but I am in complete control of today, so why not do better?
    Last year I took on my physical health and I had great success. I have worked to de clutter our home, and it’s been great. But I couldn’t tackle my spending habits, or my closet. But after make slow changes in the other areas, and trust me, those changes although small and slow, were a lot of work, I don’t want them to be all for nothing. I feel so guilty cleaning out my closet and looking at all the time and money I have wasted on these things.
    I have officially unfollowed every TH-cam Chanel and Instagram page of people in the “lux” community. I realized that was a big trigger for me and I have been easily influenced in what others have. It’s been three weeks since I stopped looking at all those accounts, and I can’t believe how much better I feel.
    I know this year isn’t going to be easy, but watching your journey has honestly been exactly what I need to hear right now, and I just had to say thank you.
    I don’t really have friends in my real life I can share this journey with yet. Honestly I am embarrassed to admit how bad my shopping has gotten, so I decided to type this comment as a safer way to start. Once I get through my first month, I am going to make myself share what I am working on this year.
    So thank you and congratulations on your journey, I hope you know your success is amazing.
    Best💛

    Dear Hannah, I'd watch any and all of your videos, no matter what type of content you choose to publish. Don't feel the pressure to hold yourself up to the same incredibly high standard artificially; to you, quality content comes naturally. Fashion or reckoning videos is not trash content, and although your more serious videos are truly insightful, genuine, relatable and inspiring, there's plenty of room in our subscriptions box for all the different things you feel like producing at any given time. I like you and your mind, I enjoy listening to the way you view things, whether that's lip gloss or a book of poetry, because you are very well equipped to add depth to traditionally "shallow" topics. Take all the time you need so you never stop enjoying this, so it doesn't become a burden and a chore. Your deeper videos are almost even more precious when they're fewer and further between - not that I wouldn't enjoy gobbling them down back to back, but I'd be equally grateful for sporadic droplets of your wisdom, since you being a normal human being with a finite amount of energy means I can't stand under the waterfall all the time. Take care of yourself, have some regular fun outside of this platform and be well! xx

What is so relevant about your channel is that you address those moments as you go through them, and therefore help us to address ours.

    Sorry, have to leave a second comment just to say that your content is of the highest quality ALWAYS, Hannah. You are the only TH-camr who I make sure I never miss a SINGLE video. I don’t always watch them right away, but when I’m back in the mood for TH-cam, it’s like “okay, time to catch up on my Hannah videos.” You are one of two channels on TH-cam (the other being Jen Luvs Reviews) that I actually have the notification bell on so I never miss an upload. Your content-from the silliest little ASMR video to the heaviest “How my no-buy year changed X” video-is just that damn good. And this won’t mean much to you because you don’t know us, but I also just want to share that you’re also one of the only beauty TH-camrs even my boyfriend enjoys watching. He’ll watch makeup videos with me occasionally just to spend time with me on something I’m interested in, and you are by far his favorite. He’s a snob who hates everyone (I say this lovingly!) so I’m only sharing this because it’s a compliment when I say your content is so good, even my boyfriend enjoys it. So I don’t think you owe us any apologies. You’re awesome for continuing to put out great content, and while it was nice to get a status update on the topics that kinda disappeared from your channel, it has had no effect of my enjoyment of your wonderful channel! So yeah. You’re amazing and I appreciate all you do. I’ll stop bombarding you with impassioned rants of encouragement now. Much love!

    I want to say that, I get it. I often haven’t been watching the heavier videos from any of my favorite creators because life is so busy and draining at the moment that I also don’t have the bandwidth. Hannah this is the first time I have ever used my google account to comment on any YT video EVER. I know, weird. I found you through a couple of other YT ladies that mentioned you (I think from poor memory it was @ASmallWardrobe & @TFD & @TarableDecisions), anyways, I've been on your journey for about a year, & whilst I don't get seriously into the makeup up stuff, its just not me, I've been so inspired by your journey, that you are prepared to be public about it, & the way you enunciate it to us. So you might step back, or your content has changed? BIG DEAL. I have absolutely no patience with ppl who are criticisive, mean, insulting, trolly, whatever in comments sections. Because IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, SWITCH OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do you tell your friend "oh I find you a bit boring now, your conversation has changed", do you email your favorite star & express your disinterest with the way they now live their life? Heck no, it would be rude and pretty vacuous. Criticism is just that - criticism, and it never, ever goes over well. Sometimes Im not that into a video a YTuber I like has put up, so I think nah & I skip over. I DON'T jump to; ok I'm going to respond to them & tell them exactly what I don't like. People change, every day, we learn, we grow, we find new interests, often we revisit old interests. Because you speak to us like we are friends, that's how I think of you.... so would I say criticising things to you? No. Would I be mean, spicy, hateful trolly, No. I wouldn't say that to my family, or my friends, & I certainly wouldn't essentially take out my keyboard & do it to a stranger, cause that would make me A, an arsehole and B, pretty friggin self righteous. The world will get to a better place, women will hopefully quickly get to a better place when we dial down the gossip, the need to comment, the need to judge, the need to....... We are the ones in charge of changing that behavior. You've inspired so many ppl with the journey you are on. Did you put yourself up as a guru & say do what I say, believe everything I say, I'm perfect." NO. It was the opposite, you told us you were an imperfect & therefore normal functioning human, & you talked about how you are trying to change that. Its gutsy, it's courageous & if ppl can't be happy for your growth, or change, or journey, hmmm I think that speaks to them, not you. If this is a social contract I think you have fufilled it, I don't think you ówe' anyone anything. What you do deserve is to put yourself first. To be respected because you are on this planet. And a big thank you for what you have given us. Big Hugs from Australia

    People taking notice of the ways in which your content has changed are not ‘trolling’ you. Almost every single comment about you on Reddit starts with, “I used to love her channel during her no buy year, but her content has changed, etc.” It’s not people hating just to hate, it’s subscribers of yours who feel like you’ve sacrificed quality for quantity and are morphing into the type of influencer that your channel used to be a respite from.
    Needing time to process things is normal and you should be able to do things on your own time, especially when you have other non-TH-cam related stuff going on, but dismissing the feelings of long time subscribers of yours as ‘hate’ or ‘trolling’ is just false. These are people who have followed you for a long time and are invested in your life and your journey and who see the ways in which you’ve dodged accountability. If you bit off more than you can chew, that’s understandable, but hiding it and not addressing it for like, seven months does real damage to viewers’ ability to take you seriously as someone who claims to want to be open and honest about all aspects of their shopping addiction journey. There’s a difference between valid critique and criticism and ‘hate’, and as you seek to grow your channel and morph into an influencer, I think it would make your life easier and your content better to learn the difference.

      I know it's a bummer when a book series, TV show, youtube channel, etc. used to be Just Right for you and then shifts gears and isn't for you anymore. I've had many experiences with that, and the more you liked the thing at first, the harder it is when it changes. The thing to do is let it go, and if you spend any time talking to other people who feel the same way (longtime viewers, miss the old content), spend that time talking about new channels/shows/books that fill that role, or even just continuing the conversation you wanted to be having without a channel/videos to guide and prompt you.
      The thing * not * to do is "spend a lot of time watching and talking about the new content you don't like, feeling like each new video is something being taken away from you instead of something being offered to someone else."

    I think it is more than fair for you to upload in a way that keeps you healthy and not emotionally overwhelmed, a "healthy" channel and growth are nothing if they come at the expense of your emotional capacity! It reminds me a bit of what rawbeautykristi has been talking about on her channel in regards to having opinions on the internet, since she's been on youtube for a long time she was reflecting on going from kind of flippantly sharing opinions/commentary to staying away from more serious topics due to the emotional toll it takes and sometimes being misunderstood (and other times being ignorant), to now venturing towards a more open discussion again. It makes sense that everyone can't deal with backlash or even just engagement in the same way, bc it depends on many factors including how much else demands your attention and emotional energy outside of youtube too.
    personally, any conflict or even interesting discussions very easily overwhelm my emotional "plate" and sometimes social media or other platforms like youtube can offer more in the form of escapism when your plate is already spilling over due to "irl" engagements. It's good to remember we are all just human with exciting but stressful lives!

Waiting until you can fully focus on it & be emotionally prepared for the response shows that you're self aware & taking good care of yourself. TH-cam shouldn't cost you literal blood, sweat & tears. At least not all the time.🎄🎅
