  • I like a good turntable. Is this one any good? Let's fix it up and make it rock again.

    Thanks for the video.
    I got one similar as that, the SL-2 ,but I could not remove the arm to clean it.

    Thanks for video! I just acquired a PL-950 turntable and need to do some maintenance.

    I have one of these as well, and I have to say despite it being on the low end of their series of turntables back then, it's a very reliable and good sounding turntable. And also, that weird color of the deck? Yeah, that's actually the color the way it's supposed to be! (although I see you did get it to look better!) All the Pioneer components are this color from this era. Great video!

      Thank you. I have several other turntables featured on my channel... I don't pass up good deals on things that need basic repair and maintenance. Many people who want to play their albums would be better off with an older refurbished one, since there's few modern choices that really work well within a budget.

    Glad I found your video, since I'm fixing a speed issue with my Pioneer PL-5 (similar to PL-7 but without Quartz Lock). Your speed adjustment technique was very interesting. Would a strobe disk on the turntable work just as well?

    • @DeadKoby
      @DeadKoby  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, if you have a strobe disk and light, that would work too.... I went to war with the army I had. As a musician, I have stroboscope tuners for instruments... so using a shure test record with a constant test tone, I can tune the tone.

    Great Video Thanks,
    I have a Pioneer PL-7 just like that one I now I've learned how to align and adjust it.
    Just for curiosity: Why didn't you use a strobe plate to test the speeds?

    • @DeadKoby
      @DeadKoby  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Use what you have..... and I don't have a strobe plate... and printing one didn't seem like a good idea at the time.

    Hey what kind of stylus/needle did you get as a replacement for this turntable?

    • @DeadKoby
      @DeadKoby  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's tricky to remember. It's a Stanton cartridge, and I found a Pfanstiehl stylus that fit correctly and sounded good.

    I've always hated to do the alignment on turntables but so many people just set the cartridge straight in the head shell and think it's done but nope you will get sibilance and other distorting sound and like you also need to do is set the hang over! I don't know if you did that? Did ya?

    • @DeadKoby
      @DeadKoby  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I always do...but don't obsess
      If it's right on the protractor and sounds good, it is good.

    You mentioned that you cleaned the speed switch (Deoxit?). How did you access the switch without opening up the table?

    • @DeadKoby
      @DeadKoby  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I DID open it up... but it was a royal pain and didn't want a 2 hour video. I use MaxPro electric contact cleaner and electronics lubricants... no disrespect to DeOxit, but I'm a maxpro dealer.

      I did not have that problem. Does the motor spin by hand? If it does, then I would check that it is receiving voltage. I found the service manual at this web site. I hope it helps you. www.vinylengine.com/library/pioneer/pl-7.shtml
      Yo no tuve ese problema. ¿El motor gira a mano? Si lo hace, entonces me gustaría comprobar que está recibiendo voltaje. Encontré el manual de servicio en este sitio web. Espero que te ayude.

    Pioneer's PLL(Phase Locked Loop) turntables do not need a speed sensor....
    Restoration???? You did absolutely NOTHING that would be considered RESTORING on this TT! You did a plinth clean and setup and replace a suspect stylus! What an absolute waste of time!!!

      @@jerryking7502 I was actually being polite. Perhaps you didn't like my wording. If you follow my channel, I fix up lots of things with the intention of selling them. I take them from non-operation, to SOLD. That's the formula, and there's plenty of videos that do just that. If you were looking for details on the inner workings of this, sorry to disappoint. Some things take a little, and some take a long time.... like the Jukebox.
