Love how the cat came in and said "Did you align the catridge?". But, a fine job as always. Akai made some fine equipment back in the day that could take some abuse.

The PL-300 is the first serious turntable I ever had, bought at a garage sale for $20. (Didn't have a suitable receiver to use it with, but....) It served me well for several years... until the tonearm counterweight broke-off, and the quartz-digital speed control failed, leaving me with something I couldn't repair myself. Still, even though it was considered 'junk" when sold new, it still out-performs most newly-offered 'entry-level' new belt-driven turntables currently on the market... and for a lot less money, too!😉

What did you do about the disintegrated rubber chassis spring boots???

Fyi people ... There's a cat on eBay who re-pops dust covers for just about all major decks...
A bit pricey but a bran new shiny clear dust cover ads alot of flare to a old beat up rig.

Hello. I am restoring one of these, and the only thing I am missing is the rubber suspension. Did you find it somewhere or have any idea of the measurments for me to order them custom made? Without the cover it works perfectly, but as soon as I cover the motor it slows down because the cover rubs against it

So do you not need to lubricate the spindle? Where would you drop the oil if you wanted to??

Unfortunately, my recently acquired PL-400 does have a speed issue. Wows every few seconds. My best guess is I need to clean the pots and switches. Any advice appreciated.

My PL-300 had the same issues. There are two pitch adjustment screws underneath the turntable, visible by a pair of holes in the bottom. You can spray some contact cleaner in the holes and massage them with a screwdriver until they turn smoothly. Mine were basically sealed shut, and this opened it up. However that proved not to be the problem, so I removed the cover (as is done in this video and found the microswitch which are connected to the 33/45 button on the front. I sprayed some contact cleaner into that microswitch and massaged the button until it clicked smoothly (it was a bit sluggish to press prior). This solved my problem, and the turntable runs at a smooth speed (not least thanks to the quartz control).

can you link the needle that you bought for a replacement? I have the same turntable that i received from my grandpa right before he passed away. i have the stock arm along with another one for im a presuming a different type of needle (honestly i don't know if this is what it is, im a bit clueless lol) but i want to know what specific cartridge to buy for the stock arm so i don't screw it up :) any help would be nice!

Hi Payton, in the video its the original cartridge and needle. Its hard to find the stylus (needle) but I recommend to buy a new cartridge/stylus combo like the Ortofon 2m Red. Many would fit without any issues, nothing too special with this turntable. But I like the Ortofon, they sound great and give you good value for money.

Just picked this same table up for 30 bucks.
The guy said that the tone arm is heavy ... But it did Infact function .
I didn't bother to ask him if he even tried to adjust the tone arm weight or the anti skate because I didn't want him to realize this could solve the problem thus killing my 30 dollar table..
    Anyway... Its in the mail.

Hey man! Very nice restoration videos! I am on the journey of restoring the same PL300 , just maybe in a bit better condition. Quick question if you may help me; the Cut button doesn't work and when I opened it I saw that there was kind of a spring attached to it and another one between the two circuit boards. They were not connected in any way, but I think they should be ...somehow. Anyway, I would appreciate if you might have any ideas or pointers so I can finish my restoration . Cheers!

Did you ever figure this out? I am restoring a PL-200 with same issue: the platter continuously spins and does not turn off - and cut button does not function.

Its not really a restoration, nothing was mentioned regarding the Tonearm, wires and bearings ?

I think so. I have a problem with the speed. Is there no V-wire inside?, do you know?

you should have moved the counterweight and the headshell before attempting any of this that is basic common sense
