The most amazing thing about this is that this was written by Stevie was he was sixteen. When I was sixteen, I was just a stupid kid while Stevie was writing songs that people would be listening to nearly 50 years into the future on some site called "TH-cam" and people will continue to listen to forever.(long after TH-cam is gone) What a genius.
Rest in Peace Tammi Terrell. Heaven must have sent you from above. Thank you Steve for writing such a fantastic piece. Much respect to the collaborators, and of course the Funk Brothers, esp. those who've departed us. Thank you Mr. Gordy.
Another classic gem straight from the vault. Tammi Terrell, god bless her soul, was a terrific and talented singer, gone before her time. She left us with this classic, which, I hate to say, sounds just as good, if not better than Stevie's version. Motown lives!
+Rodney Davis Stevie Wonder is the greatest songwriter of our time and he lets you feel his song in its entirely when he sings it. Stevie would sometimes write songs for other artist e.g. "Until You Come Back To Me" for Aretha Franklin. I love this song more than yesterday. RIP Tammi.. :-)
and God given talent!!! He was blind! played every instrument berry Gordy handed him! Unreal!!! His mom was a big influence!!! I just always loved him from fingertips and I was Born to love her....till now!! He is the BEST!
To be fair, he didn't provide the "lyrical depth." That was Clarence Paul & Morris Broadnax, his co-composers who, like fellow Motown songwriter Sylvia Moy, usually wrote the lyrics to his melodies. After 1970 the lyrics were written by Syreeta Wright. Stevie Wonder didn't start writing his own lyrics without assistance till 1972 with Music of Mind.
It's no secret that I'm a big fan of Tammi Terrell and I love her voice. Knowing her story and hearing that sweet voice can bring tears to my eyes. She lives on in my heart and I would love to have seen her in concert. Stevie W, what a legend to write a song like that aged 16.
no denying stevie's genius - and, admittedly, stevie's version has over three times as many plays as tammi's on my itunes - but i'm still struck by the the powerful and dark mood tammi brings to the song every single time i listen to it.
This has been one of my favorite songs that Stevie ever recorded. But, WOW!! the Tammi Terrell version is soooo touching. Even though the Stevie Wonder version is uptempo, there is still a poignancy to the song. It is captured so faithfully in the Tammi Terrell version. Fantastic song!
WOW, never knew she sang it before Stevie. This version is sooo unique, both are great. Stevie's is still my favorite but this one has some serious musical dynamics going on...GREAT WORK MOTOWN
He also wrote Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever for the Four Tops when he was 16. Also penned Until You Come Back That's What I'm Gonna Do about the same age. Aretha Franklin had a huge hit with it around '73 or '74.
WHAT THE... ? I had no idea this song was first recorded in the 60s. Good Lord, I thought I knew practically everything about Motown. I'm really happy that I don't! #StevieWonderisamusicalgenius
I consider myself a GREAT Stevie Wonder fan and I've NEVER heard this before. I knew he wrote the song in 1966 but I never knew Tammi ever recorded it. Love the 60's vamp. That vamp turnd into an 80's dancefloor beat. Thanks for posting!!
Thanks for sharing the story Gary, this has long been one of my favourite soul songs (both the Tammi and the Stevie version) but I never knew Stevie wrote it when he was 16!
Stevie Wonder was and still is a charismatic, ex child prodigy. He's truly blessed with multi-musical instrument playing and songwriting skills. And has musical prowess and talent. A genius from an early age. Something he's always in interviews shown to have a strong faith in. And at the time he wrote it, he'd worked hard with the excellent in-house song writing team(s) at Tamla Motown.
This is all that's great about TH-cam. Thanks uploader for posting this - I had no idea that "All I Do" was written for Tammi and that she even sang it. It's wonderful to know that at 46 I'm still learning new things every day.
Stevie is just a talented man u are born with certain genes that some sixteen year old don't or even no the first thing about love just the times are changing there will one day be a stevie and tammy
I recently viewed her story on Unsung... Too bad, all that she had to go through in her very short life, professionally and personally, and that she had never found true love.
This is truly fascinating stuff. "All I Do" has long been one of my favorite Stevie Wonder compositions........I HAD NO CLUE it was originally written for Tammi Terrell. Just how far does Stevie's genius go back anyway? My guess.....the day he was born.
It really is amazing that "All I Do" song by Tammi Terrell has a slower tempo and the lyrics are heard better than Stevie Wonder's " All I Do" in which has a faster tempo. I enjoy hearing Michael Jackson sing in the background vocals giving the song an extra charm!
Okay, Michael sounds pretty darn cute in the background. Never knew he was on the track, but now that you've shared that fact, it's undeniable. I love the contrast of his lighter, high tone with the much deeper O'Jays. A nice blend. And I agree with everyone else's general consensus regarding Tammi's version. It definitely has a hauntingly beautiful tone to it. I like the two drastically different interpretations of this song.
This Tammi Terrell woman was something else ... deeply talented ... David Ruffin and Marvin Gaye were enthralled by her ... and so are the rest of us. x
Stevie was only 16 when he composed this... and others like "Uptight", "Hey love", "i was made to love her" or "the tears of a clown".... pure genius !
didn't know Stevie had written this song for Tammy T. He had a big hit with it himself years later. I first know of Tammy because of duets with Marvin Gaye.
I consider myself to be the biggest Stevie Wonder fan under 40 and I didn't know that he originally wrote this song for Tammi Terrell. And @ age 16?? INCREDIBLE! This is one of my favorite Stevie Wonder songs and this discovery makes me love it even more. Tammi Terrell was an phenomenal talent that went too soon.
i heard this version in a casino playing cards and since then it has had my ear since then. I really like Stevie wonders' version but i must say she brings so much more soul and realization to the lyrics and makes my think more about my past love with ex's. that's what i feel an artist should do for the listener, is evoke emotion, memories and feelings. After I read her bio her version takes me even more.
Finding this is great. Thanks for uploading share Gary H. I've loved this song for years, and couldn't recall where I'd first heard it...Now I know. Wonderful Steveland Morris, and Tammi Terrell. Certainly is dynamic and a magical listen...KTF
I just bought "A Cellarful Of Motown" and listened to this version and had NO IDEA Tammi cut it first. I love it!! You speak of Richard Pegue (RIP),I was born and raised in Chicago and came up listening to Richard waay back when he was on WGCI on Sat. nights. I credit him as well as my Mom and Pops (RIP) for all I know concerning true classic music.
Hey, I'd never knew that Tammy Terrell recorded this! It's always been one of my favorite Stevie Wonder songs and I thought it would be hard to top, but I have to say I like Tammi's version just as much. Thanks for posting this!
Tammi DID make it big. If you've heard "Ain't No Mountain", or "You're All I Need to Get By" or many other Marvin Gaye duets you've heard Tammi's work. She was widely regarded as beautiful and talented. If you mention Marvin , many people will think of Tammi.
Wow, Tammy did this song when she was 16. Stevie was about the 15 when he wrote this song. Shut the front door. They should had promoted the hell out of this song. You know if Tammy had lived a little longer she could had replace Diana. Just listening to her sing this song she sound like Diana at times.
Sorry I meant she was an adult when she recorded this song. Btw Stevie was 16 when he co-wrote this song. His version of this song is on his Hotter Than July album released 1980
Tammy such a beautiful woman did not deserve what she went through, Today, Radio stations would've been playing classical hits from the 70s and 80s if she was alive then coz she went on recording and performing until she was too ill, but her legacy lives on
hi i love this ,i sure wish i paid more attention when it hit. back in the city on hayes st in the1960s tammi is a great special person, it is our loss that she is not producing here on earth at this time. we will have to catch up. when we get there, here now. pl pl

Stevie wrote this wonderful song though. Without Stevie's great musical brain, Tammi's version would not even exist. To me the fact that Stevie wrote it as a teenager is amazing - A true musical genius.
i liked Tammi's version but at 2:57 is when i almost started to cry, every time stevie's version comes on it hits me in my musical soul and makes me want to cry
My buddy, a music historian, told me that Stevie wrote this in the 60s but I had no idea Tammi sang it. I thought Stevie sat on it like he did with 20 albums worth of songs. He could release an new album a month for the next 20 years.
One learns something new every day! there aren't many geniuses in our world. stevie, however, defintely qualifies as a true musical genius - was so far ahead of his peers in his writing and tune-crafting.....
Timeless song, the words speak volumes, love how u coupled the two songs together. Both renditons are jewels to the world, the world lost an angel when Tami's flame was exstinguished so prematurely if ever their was a candel in the wind it was her, Stevie must have been crushed.
Originally recorded by Tammi Terrell in 1966 though unreleased, this was shortly thereafter recorded by Brenda Holloway on March 24, 1966 and, again, put in the can. tammi's rendition is probably my favourite song of all time. romantic and tragic at the same time, dark and beautiful.
The most amazing thing about this is that this was written by Stevie was he was sixteen. Yes, Tammi’s version is addictive.
I agree Ihad an original
Another classic gem straight from the vault. Tammi Terrell, god bless her soul, was a terrific and talented singer, gone before her time. She left us with this classic, which, I hate to say, sounds just as good, if not better than Stevie's version.
Motown lives!
What blows my mind that a teenage kid (Lil Stevie Wonder) wrote this....What kid has so much lyrical depth?
+Rodney Davis Stevie Wonder is the greatest songwriter of our time and he lets you feel his song in its entirely when he sings it. Stevie would sometimes write songs for other artist e.g. "Until You Come Back To Me" for Aretha Franklin.

Love Tammy Terrell, Her and Marvin made such beautiful music.
Classic Tammi and Stevie!!!
VERY NICE. THE WOMAN HAD A SPECIAL SOMETHING SOMETHING. SHE MOVED YOUR SOUL WHEN SHE SANG.
loveyouall66 - She had me when she sang: “and let me tell ya boy”.
