- A rather lengthy video documenting the history of the Reading Company's Rutherford Yard from its inception through the RDG and Conrail years to its current role as an intermodal terminal for Norfolk Southern.

The Reading Company was one of the best! It rose as a small railway company, to a huge one during the early 20th Century, and went down in history as perhaps one of the greatest railroads in American history. And plus, we still have the Reading Railroad Museum, 4 of the original T-1s, and the original corporation now known as Reading International.
Excellent program , well done on so many levels . The READING was a class act and your vid did it justice .

How the hell does someone give this documentary a thumbs down?? WTH? Anyway, this is a great watch and I love seeing the old original railroads of the north east. I'm a fan of Reading as well as the CNJ and PRR but grew up in the Conrail era railfanning with my Dad as a teenager. I always wished I got to see the late steam and early diesel era in person. It's just the best time in my opinion. videos like this and rail museums are the next best. Thanks.

Wow and Wow i grew up in this area. I remember this yard well. This yard is where my grandfather started working for the Reading. He started in 1914 as a call boy. Worked there until the early 1930s. Then he became a car inspector for Hershey Chocolate Co.and retired from there in 1964. Great video. It brought back many memories. Thanks for the work you put into this.

I grew up south of Rutherford on the line to Hagerstown and got to see a great variety of Reading and WM power. Nice to see a vid on Rutherford.

Went thru this yard in the mid 90's when it was a shell left. Nice to see.

Wow! What a great and comprehensive, historical video. Being from New Castle, PA, I've never seen this yard. But, this astounding production gives me a very good look into Rutherford's railroading past. I thank you greatly.
Thank you for uploading this video I have been looking for something on the Rutherford yard for a long time now. It was good to see how the yard and my old hometown changed over the years Thank You again.
I live about 20mins away from that facility. Some may complain about the demise of the original yard. But it least got a new lease on life, unlike many other closed yards on CR.
I may be an Okie and a Rock Island fan through and through... but reading Mike Bednar's articles on railroading in the NE in The Railroad Press/Trains Railroads of the Past sparked an interest that I still have regarding the LV, Reading, Pennsy, CNJ, WM, Erie, and the others up there. Well done as always with the slides and video selection! Also the music was good too, normally I don't like music with railroad videos but this was alright!
If you appreciate Mike Bednar, then you would enjoy his narration on the John Pechulis videos on many of his titles. I have grown to appreciate the NE railroads as well through his efforts. Being a railfan photographer, model railroader, and all-around train nut, I have watched hundreds of videos on youtube, this is by far the best I have ever viewed. The combination of video, excellent still shots, text, and music are perfect. I can't say enough positive points about it. Did you take the slides and video yourself? Just an outstanding production, thank you.
Thanks for your comments. About 60 percent of the material is my original work, a lot of the early Reading stills came from various sources, too numerous to give individual credit.
11:23 Note that Baldwin 535 does not have a fuel tank between the trucks. It's in the short hood!! Same with Canadian Pacific's.

What a shame, if the roundhouse wasn’t destroyed by fire, maybe it could’ve been turned into a museum, like the one in Baltimore. Who knows.
Highly doubtful. It would have been demolished anyway along with all the other structures at the site to make room for the intermodal terminal.
@@fmnut That’s what the modern railroad industry has changed unfortunately.
Looking at the demolition pictures of the coaling dock, I was trying to see if my dump truck was in any of the photos. No, it's not, although a couple show the crane. I was a "hired truck" on that demo job. It lasted almost a month longer then anticipated because of the massive amount of rebar in the concrete, making the job a lot harder then the original bid.
Yes, almost every coaling dock demolition I am familiar with was underestimated due to the heavier than anticipated construction. The fellow that got the contract for the one at Hagerstown used explosives. The only thing that did was knock it over on its side, he still had to jackhammer it apart.

This was so sad to watch from beginning to the end. This once massive, colorful, extremely busy freight yard with multiple business buildings... GONE
