    I purchased my Rolex Submariner back in 1983 or 84... I loved the stainless steel look and the durability of the watch. I was getting into underwater welding and all the guys that dove wore them. And James Bond wore one (back then it was a big deal because it wasn't an Omega). So I cut grass for $10 a yard and saved all the money from odd jobs and in about two years I brought my pickle jar full of paper and coins to Hausmann Jewelers and purchased my watch. My constant companion.

    Didn't Rolex purchase the patents for what they would later rename the 'Oyster case' from other entities? And i know for sure that they didn't have the first self winding watch. They made a modification of the Harwood bumper winder that had existed for almost 10 years before they released their full 360 degree circumferential winder. With other auto-wind pocket watches existing all the way back in the second half of the 1700's.

      EXACTLY correct BROTHER. Rolex just steal the ideas and claimed to be theirs and public bought it. SUB wasn't the first dive watch. Even PANERAI made a dive watch before SUB. How about Fifty Fathoms. It is 100 times better watch then a SUB and was made before SUB but no one talks about it. All these watch experts are liars, and hiding the truth. Why they don't expose fucking ROLEX. They are probably in the pockets.

    • @Dirtymutt9
      @Dirtymutt9 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are called "tropical" dials. Humidity can cause the dials to look like that. I've also heard that the radiation from the tritium used in the lume can also cause some of the patina. I'm no expert, these are just explanations that I've read myself

    • @drheud1512
      @drheud1512 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Master thanks for the reply! The theory with the humidity seems plausible. For the tritium, well actually it was radium(tritium is a hydrogen isotope, hence a gas): might be but I'm not sure. I've also thought about uv light. It could have a sort of bleaching effect, like when you leave clothes in the sun to dry...

    • @Dirtymutt9
      @Dirtymutt9 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@drheud1512 tritium on its own is a gas however the way tritium lume is made the adhesive polyvinyl acetate is trittiated(sp) during manufacture. As tritium is just an isotope of hydrogen it is relatively straight forward to do. Pretty wild the lengths they went to to make glowing indices on watches back in the day!

Any photo of him wearing a watch, will show this one and only timepiece. Now that’s a rugged watch! It’s his birthday, today, incidentally.

    Hello, actually the first self-winding wristwatch was displayed at Baselworld in 1926 it was known as the Fortis Harwood, John Harwood actually invented it in 1917... However the very first documented self-winding watch was made by Abraham Louis Perrelet in 1777, and Abrahams movement works on exactly the same principles as today's automatic watch movements. How cool is that!

      @@Watch-Crazy Yeah, there were self-winding movements very early for sure. Thought this was about wristwatches, since Rolex, you know, and I happen to like Fortis for their seldomly credited innovations :) And I like them for staying independent and delivering some nice tool watches with great technology at affordable prices. They don't get enough credit IMHO.

      @@otobotrecords Agreed, he was definitely talking about wristwatches, but my ears just perked up when he said the first self-winding watch as opposed to wristwatch... Any opportunity to get a bit of horological history out there... lol, sorry!!
      Absolutely I couldn't agree with you more, Fortis have achieved so much since 1912, and have won many awards, but as you say they are rarely talked about. Unfortunately I personally think this is more likely due to Fortis themselves not jumping on the online marketing/social marketing band wagon like so many others. But all in all excellent tool watches, many comparable to the likes of IWC... and at a fraction of the price.

    • @otobotrecords
      @otobotrecords 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Watch-Crazy I think that was only to highlight one of the many misconceptions/misattributions about/to Rolex (which I think is a good push in the right direction from a channel this big). But kudos to you for keeping the historical and horological torch afire.
      You're right one of the reasons why Fortis is not talked about more is their own fault in missed opportunities online, and probably their struggles of the past years. But what does it tell us about so many other watch channels with about 100K subscribers that seem to always miss the mark when they could and should talk about Fortis (when the topic is for example space or aerial watches)?
