Here in Thailand Teslas were about 30% more expensive than other RHD markets like Australia. Last week BYD released the Seal here much cheaper than Tesla and BYD took 1,000 orders in a hour. I ordered one. Today Tesla cut the prices of all teslas sold here by a big chunk.

The Dolphin is currently the best selling EV in Brazil, followed by the BYD D1 and the BYD Yuan Plus. When it comes to EVs, BYD by itself outsells every other carmaker in Brazil, with over 59% market share.
And this is without the Seagull, which is expected to become the best-selling EV here when it is finally released, and might even give the best selling ICE cars here a run for their money.
BYD also has the best-selling PHEV in Brazil, the BYD Song Plus, though it's far from dominating the PHEV market here, being "just" the third best-selling brand.
This data is for just August, BTW. If you take the whole year into account BYD places much lower, as it only started truly upping its game here about halfway through the year.

Also most are still buying Hybrid those not in dense tier 1 cities from comments
It seem country side towns there are no high restrictions for petrol car.
Only in Tie 1 dense cities there are driving restrictions on ICE cars, driving on alternate days, and ICE registration is extremely hard to get

It seems that BYD doesn't have one knock out model. It is almost like they are churning out new car models for the novelty of them or just throwing things against the wall to see which ones stick.
This tells me that they really are missing an overall design philosophy. If I had to guess, I would bet that they have multiple design teams for the cars look and interior. This would explain why such a different look and feel between its models.

Hmmm... selective use of statistics. While BYD is currently "doing well" (sales-wise), the company is not very profitable. Also, BYD is not really a serious competitor to Tesla - they serve different market sectors. BYD will enjoy its "moment in the sun", but their big challenge will be the increasing influence of software and computerisation in the transport and automotive sectors. Right now, BYD makes fairly good cars - but that's all they are. The future (almost upon us) is about computerised robotic transport, and in this arena BYD is a non-starter.

Your claim that BYD is not very profitable is out of date. In Q1 2023 BYD's gross profit margin on car sales was almost as high as Tesla's, and in Q2, BYD's profit margin was higher than Tesla's. BYD has a frustrating habit of releasing its quarterly financial results about 2 months after the end of the quarter, so we will have to wait until early December to see how profitable BYD has been in Q3.

I agree that BYD appears to lack some of Tesla's competitive advantages, such as autonomous driving technology, a supercharging network and robotics. However, you are underestimating BYD's strengths. If you do an internet search for "BYD" plus the words "innovation" and/or "vertical integration", you might be surprised to discover just how accomplished the company is. As for its unimpressive footprint outside of China... BYD became the 10th largest car maker in the world by June 2023, and its August sales make it (perhaps temporarily) the 4th largest. This sudden rise is due to BYD's car sales growing about 100% (sometimes more) annually for the past few years: yes, it is growing its sales (both BEV and PHEV) more than twice as fast as Tesla.
My guess is that a lot of people outside China are reluctant to buy a BYD car because they have never heard of the brand and, being Chinese, people might assume BYD cars are of poor quality. But if they hear, "Actually, BYD is a leader in electric busses in many countries, is the 4th largest car company in the world, and is likely to be the largest BEV maker (overtaking Tesla) within the next year", then many people will suddenly stop dismissing BYD out of hand. That is how I think BYD will start to become a well-known (and acceptable) brand name to westerners. My guess/hope is that Tesla is a better long-term investment than BYD, but BYD is far from being a poor investment.

I agree but I want to have a smart car ( or access to a Robotaxi that by definition is smart ) and if my car is smart, I would worry if it was Chinese. I think the overall leader will be Tesla due to the Supercharger network, FSD, Dojo, and being the only one with a proper centralised car operating system. If anyone started doing a proper FSD like Tesla today, they would first have to build a big fleet of cars capable of collecting video for training, they would have to build the most powerful computer in the world, they would have to attract all the best AI talent etc etc, even if someone started doing that, it would take them 10 year to get to the point where Tesla is today.
The only two big companies I trust are Apple and Tesla. Apple has already proven that they don't have access to the users's data ( by not being able to access a terrorists iPhone data even if they wanted ) and that they will never allow a government to have access to it ( by deciding they would rather remove FaceTime and Messages from the UK if the government insists in having a backdoor key to access data ).
Tesla has proven to me by many of their actions and decisions that I can trust them, also their business model is not based on monetising customers data like Facebook and Google.
China is the very opposite, even when you buy Chinese shares in a company like BYD they're not really BYD shared but shares in a separate company that doesn't have to disclose all the companies data and doesn't follow wall street rules like auditing every 3 years etc.
Considering China is behaving like an Imperialistic country that can potentially trigger a war with the West, I would worry. Luckily their cars are not smart yet, they don't collect video data or have FSD yet but they'll either start doing that or have no chance of competing with Tesla. Imagine a country like China being able to control many of the vehicles the enemy is using turning each one into a weapon.

Interesting opinion. I wonder if you have been following Tesla's Dojo which is well on the way to becoming the most powerful supercomputer in the world and is dedicated to real world AI.
I wonder if you're aware of FSD v12 which is a game changer, it's the very first time a car was able to drive autonomously after being trained purely on video without any line of code being written for the task, very similar to how a human baby learns. Now, the only thing that matters, is video data, lots of it, millions. You don't need more programmers, you don't need more AI advances etc, it's been solved, all you need is dedicated computer power and lots and lots of video, the kind of amount that only a company with millions of cars collecting video data from several cameras has access to.
I also wonder if you're aware that the Tesla supercomputer has been developed specifically for real world AI training while Nvidia is much more generic, this makes a big difference in performance and power consumption which for a supercomputer become the most important measures etc.
I like to follow facts, being a fanboy or not is irrelevant, Elon or no Elon, it is what it is. If another company appears with better technology, I'd quickly switch my hopes to that company.
I follow this subject closely, I enjoy conversations based on facts with people with different opinions like yours, if I am wrong I want to find out.

The Jevons Paradox says that when something becomes increasingly efficient/easy/cheap, demand for it increases. This suggests that as EVs become cheaper than ICE vehicles and fully autonomous driving capabilities become widespread, demand for EVs might actually increase. I'm not saying that is the most likely outcome; merely that that is what the Jevons Paradox predicts. As such, Tony Seba (and his many fans who repeat his message) has a gaping hole in his thesis that robotaxis will reduce the number of cars, because his books and video lectures ignore the Jevons Paradox entirely.

I see your point but not quite. The reason for decreasing demand is that when you buy a car it spends 95% of the time parked so you're paying for 20 times the use you actually get. If you paid for the 5% only, it would be much more affordable. The only reason to have a car parked outside your home is to have immediate access to one, if you were able to call a Robotaxi that would arrive within a couple of minutes and would be really cheap to use due to having no driver ( and if it's an EV, incredibly cheap running cost, like 1/6 of an ICE car ), you'd probably prefer not to own a car. Also Tesla has talked of an App where anyone that owns a Tesla would be able to make it available for others to use, either from a list of contacts you provide or anyone else. During those times if someone summoned your car, it would leave by itself, take the other person somewhere and return to park outside your home, all by itself. This way many people could conveniently share the same cars. This isn't about EV or not EV, this is about level 5 autonomy. This is unlikely to happen with ICE cars because they're not smart enough and probably will never be.

@@synthmaker The world is filled with examples of people paying extra money to obtain convenience. Here are three examples to do with food. First, lots of people choose to pay for the convenience of having pre-cooked food (e.g., pizza or Indian/Chinese meals) delivered to their home rather than cook at home, even though the home-delivered food is, say, 5 or 10 times more expensive than cooking at home. Second, my experience suggests that the majority of people who work in an office environment buy lunch each day rather than bringing a packed lunch from home, despite the significant cost savings of bringing a packed lunch. Third, lots of people buy a Starbucks coffee while commuting each day rather than wait until they get to the office and make coffee significantly cheaper.
So, (warning: I'm going to use some made-up numbers) imagine a future where a person can own and operate their own autonomous vehicle for, say, $600 per month or use robotaxis for $200 per month. Many people will choose the cheaper option, just like many people choose to cook at home. But there will also be many people who are willing to pay extra for the convenience of having their own private and immediately-available car rather than wait a few minutes for a robotaxi to arrive.
As for a person using their car only 5% of the time and the rest of the time it is parked... Yes, I understand that logic. But the idea that countless people will use their own car to commute to/from work and make lots of money by releasing their car into a robotaxi fleet for the rest of the time might be overly optimistic, because demand for transport will be greatest during rush-hour when everyone is commuting to/from work, and will decline significantly during most of the rest of the day. Again, using made-up numbers, let's assume a city can be well-served (during non rush-hours) by a fleet of 1000 taxis, but there are 10,000 people who use their privately own cars to commute during rush hour and then release their cars into a robotaxi fleet the rest of the time. Since there are 10 times as many robotaxis as are needed, each robotaxi will get relatively few customers and hence will make relatively little money for its owner. If it does make a lot of of money for its owner, then within a year you will see 20,000 or 50,000 people releasing their cars into the robotaxi fleet in the hope of making lots of money, and per-car profits will decrease to a mediocre level.
