The original rebel galaxy was one of my favorite games of all time. It’s one of very few games that I can actually go back and play again and again without getting bored. I love the look of it and of course the music is incredible! Can’t wait to play this!
I would totally recommend it as I have both games ! This one focuses more on star fighting ! But has the mining and other options like it’s predecessor ! It feels like a natural sequel in that the first game you command giant battleships and the sequel you play as a star fighter ! I totally love both games and every fan of space combat should love both of them ! 🙌💯
This...Freelancer is awesome and I loved those bar scenes + music. On the other hand, Freelancer gave me a throwback to Aquanox with that. I actually really love that stuff.
The rest of us are enjoying the game already and will be while you're keeping valves joystick well lubricated on your high horse for the next year... cheers.

How is the switch version ? I have the PlayStation version and it’s awesome except it doesn’t have the ship editor found in the pc version . So I assuming that it won’t be in the switch version either . But it’s still an awesome game on PlayStation 4 and 5 !
Kind of a bummer they abandoned the whole capital ship idea. Not many games take on large capital ship gameplay. Where as there are a large amount of small ship games out there. Good game none the less.
About the absence of lateral and vertical thrust- by holding down the decrease throttle button you can cut engines and inertial dampeners, which can allow you to basically broadside your enemies as you drift beside them.
@@Fante247 I mean...its on PC. Before steam you had to put individual discs in the drive to run different games. If we're talking about consumer choice... I can understand not liking epic to a point. But this isnt the same as, say Walmart only being allowed to sell a game.
@@JezzaL You have to understand that exclusivity is not good for the consumer, no matter how you look at it. Also try to google Epic class action lawsuit, and understand why i don't want an account with Epic at all. Also there are countries where the Epic launcher is not available.
Absolutely right, and I played and loved Privateer (the original) to an extent that no game since then has matched. I even love the dated-looking, partially view-obscuring cockpits ... takes me back. I expect I'll be buying the game for both PS4 and Steam once it reaches each of those platforms, so the game developers will eventually get their well-earned money from me ... but as much as I would like to have it tomorrow, I'm going to make myself wait so as to steer clear of the Epic store.
For those who don't catch a Privateer, yes, the closest analogue is Freelancer. We can say that it was the last of its kind. No one after Roberts did not try to beat out of the publishers of such large budgets and terms for space simulators, in which the first place - a grand plot adventure in a brightly diverse space, not the harsh everyday life of astronauts in a realistically empty infinity. For Star Citizen, however, he was able to get even more money and time to develop from his fans. But that's another story.
I love how the cockpit color palette and explosions harken back to Wing Commander Warm and fuzzy feeling (I cried a bit when finally saving the Firekka)

I finally picked this up after upgrading my PC's video card. I just love the entire look and feel of this. Like you said, it brings me back to the Privateer days. Such a fun escape!
Privateer was and still is my favorite space simulator, where I spent most of my time as a child. Outlaw is a product almost 100% nostalgic for the old Chris Roberts space simulators (yes, the creator of the star citizen). In Privateer, there was something that is now actually lost in modern space simulators - the lightness and the essence. I love Elite Dangerous, I've spent many tens of hours in it, but like other "serious" space games, it's too focused on realism, turning space adventure into a realistic, but often boring routine. Too much attention is paid to detail, and too little sense in what to play this game for.
Again I second that! So many hours spend on privateer and privateer 2 but more on the first one. I miss those simpler times when you just load a game have some fun with it for an hour or so and did not need to have a course in physics to play it. cheers!
I couldn't have said it better myself. Old Privateer (and Wing Commander) fan myself and I'm thrilled that a game is finally being made that captures the essence of those games. All of the other modern space ship simulators seem to have forgotten to put the game (i.e. fun) in their simulators.

Heh, actually this really looks like a new wing commander privateer (for those who still know that classic). The whole narrative, set up, look of flight.
I'm absolutely loving Outlaw - probably even more than I did the original game. Playing on Veteran has been an extremely difficult and rewarding start; I'm about 10 hours in and just now figured out that you can tap into your limited power pool to refresh your shields (Hint: when you go into the radial menu, it's on the bottom right side (Transfer Power to Shields). I now need to work on making sure I don't use Transfer Shields to Power by mistake in the middle of combat ;-) Really hoping this series blows up because I'm already looking forward to a 3rd game that's larger scale, 3D space and with capital ships and/or fighters; maybe even fleet or faction building like Starpoint Gemini or a lite X-series game!
@@RetroVikingr89 It's not Steampunk at all. It's more pulp sci-fi meets outlaw biker. Steampunk is a very narrowly defined genre comprised of Victorian aesthetics and Vernian/Shelly sci-fi themes. Totally different aesthetic.

Looks nice. The good old Privateer / Wing Commander vibes are definitely there. Maybe it's a bit on the easy side, what with that "auto-follow" option and all, so I might opt for the "old school" mode. I don't mind that it doesn't have vertical & lateral thrust control, the same way I didn't mind for that in Privateer. I believe it suits better its "relaxed" - "non-hardcore" space sim feel, after all. I'd also prefer to play the role of a strong male lead instead of a female one, but I guess that's only a minor gripe. In any case, the mere fact that this is (currently) available for the epic store only, instantly makes it a big "no-no" for me. I'm not in any particular hurry to play this, since I've got literally thousands of other great games to occupy myself with, so I'll just wait for a properly released pc version (on Steam, of course !). Sweeney will never see a single dime from me, ever.
Yeah, the assists go a bit far in my opinion but they'll help people who can't wrap their head around these type of games. Anyone even halfway familiar with the older games or modern space sims are best off playing in old-school mode. You play a woman in this game because it's a prequel to the original, you're the main character's aunt.
In the original mixing mining and combat lasers was highly effective as the miners punched shields well while the combats did good armor/hull damage. Dunno if it translates to this version but it's a thought

Wow, didn't realise this was so close to release! Looks really fun, kinda hoped there would be more ships but the ones they do have sound sufficiently varied and I like the sound of owning an asteroid base. Will likely pick this up sometime soon.
How is the economy in the game for trading? Are they fairly static prices for the locations, or do selling prices drop as you overstock a certain location?

the mining lazar is an effective weapon in the game. Look at the states of the weapon. In Elite it is just a tool, in rebel galaxy and outlaw it is both a tool and a weapon.
Just curious is there a sort of "flight assist off" like ED has so that you basically turn into a flying brick in space and momentum is based on propulsion and force instead of like a controlled environment? People that have played ED understand what I'm talking about

antwan1357 I backed it, played for a year or so, even bought a HOTAS. Paid for the expansions and played the horizons expansion bit more but haven’t played it since and have just been following its development. From what I can tell by watching all of Obsidian Ants videos very little has changed since launching horizons
I wish reviewers 9f space games would mention the bloody control schemes .....like roll control or is it only banked turning , lots of us ask this question about controls because its a deal breaker for some
@@dcsignal5241 It plays like both. With the assists and third person view it's closer to Freelancer. Old-school mode in the cockpit plays like Privateer. The universe design is straight-up Privateer.
So if there's a parking fee, what happens if you're bankrupt, no weapons or tractor beam? Obviously you'd need to go out of your way to become that destitute, but just wondering.
Could you share your mouse and keyboard settings? As for me I couldn't find one that was feeling right with the mouse. Comming from ED or X4 a big part mostly is due to missing lateral movement. But even knowing that the mouse and keyboard combination still does not fit well if you ask me. And since I have not replaced my HOTAS yet I am stuck to mouse and keyboard or controller but I do not like the later one for using if there are other options..
This really does look awesome for some quick fun to end the evening with! It's been so long since a real Freelancer successor came along. Why no one holding the rights to it has seen the value of re-releasing Freelancer before now depresses me. The only thing here I was hoping would be different is multiple ship ownership. Kinda takes the edge off all the customization possibilities when you'll probably just trade it in short order.
The opposite to Elite Dangerous? SOLD! PS. Do you recommend "old school mode"? I'm a big ban of Everspace's flight mechanics. I'm also a big fan of fun😁
Bit of a stretch here. It was pretty clear from the Kickstarter itself it was never going to be like this. You do read don't you? That being said it is impressive at the dev time for Outlaws and bad looking for SC.
@@PepicWalrus Apparently better than you. Lol. I pledged at the very beginning, before the late-stage stretch objectives were added. Back then SC was promoted as an experience in the mold of Privateer. You can still go read the kickstarter page. It'is very different from what it was at the time I pledged back in 2012, but you'll be able to see how different it is from what the proposed game is nowadays. Even with all the addition, If you delete the implied online bits, it sounds a lot more like what like what RGO is than to what SC is proposing to be. Take a look at the Hornet's cockpit view if you want to have a good laugh.
There's a selection in the game launcher that lets you switch off music that hasn't been cleared for streaming. The majority of it has been licensed though. Folks still might get strikes but that's more due to TH-cam's system being flawed than the game.
Yeah, it's fantastic that the developers included that option. I made sure to use it. Worked perfectly for Twitch, but I still had issues with TH-cam. People shouldn't let that detract from the awesome music though. It would have been wrong for me to not mention the problems however. :)

I had Privateer! I could never get it to work, though. I poured over the manual and imagined playing it.

I love the aesthetic of this game. Very 90s, very B5/Privateer, in a good way.

All you have to do is download, install then buy and download it. Then you can uninstall the launcher.
It's better than actually having to leave the house and walk further to another store. It's just a few mouse clicks while sat down =D.

If you use the inertia inhibitor it works very much like that yes. There's no vertical or lateral thrust though.

Paid for the expansions and played the horizons expansion bit more but haven’t played it since and have just been following its development. From what I can tell by watching all of Obsidian Ants videos very little has changed since launching horizons

I wish reviewers 9f space games would mention the bloody control schemes .....like roll control or is it only banked turning , lots of us ask this question about controls because its a deal breaker for some
All you kids comparing this to Freelancer, do take a look a WC: Privateer. It's very, very similar, but obviously brought way up to date.
I hope it plays more like Privateer than Freelancer as well.
@@dcsignal5241 It plays like both. With the assists and third person view it's closer to Freelancer. Old-school mode in the cockpit plays like Privateer. The universe design is straight-up Privateer.

Obviously you'd need to go out of your way to become that destitute, but just wondering.
Could you share your mouse and keyboard settings? As for me I couldn't find one that was feeling right with the mouse. Comming from ED or X4 a big part mostly is due to missing lateral movement. But even knowing that the mouse and keyboard combination still does not fit well if you ask me. And since I have not replaced my HOTAS yet I am stuck to mouse and keyboard or controller but I do not like the later one for using if there are other options..

This really does look awesome for some quick fun to end the evening with! It's been so long since a real Freelancer successor came along. Why no one holding the rights to it has seen the value of re-releasing Freelancer before now depresses me. The only thing here I was hoping would be different is multiple ship ownership. Kinda takes the edge off all the customization possibilities when you'll probably just trade it in short order.
Freelancer is abandonware now and can be downloaded entirely for free.
It is a really great game. Love the music
I'll keep an eye out for it next yer when it finally comes out on Steam. I won't do Epic...

Good game. Using my X55 HOTAS. Assigning buttons takes a while, but there is great joystick support.
Came to this vid for confirmation of HOTAS use, found a comment too. Happy days.

Can you adjust all the colors? The game looks like a 5 year old colored it with a fist full of primary colors.

That being said it is impressive at the dev time for Outlaws and bad looking for SC.

I pledged at the very beginning, before the late-stage stretch objectives were added. Back then SC was promoted as an experience in the mold of Privateer.
You can still go read the kickstarter page. It'is very different from what it was at the time I pledged back in 2012, but you'll be able to see how different it is from what the proposed game is nowadays. Even with all the addition, If you delete the implied online bits, it sounds a lot more like what like what RGO is than to what SC is proposing to be.
Take a look at the Hornet's cockpit view if you want to have a good laugh.

There's a selection in the game launcher that lets you switch off music that hasn't been cleared for streaming. The majority of it has been licensed though. Folks still might get strikes but that's more due to TH-cam's system being flawed than the game.
Yeah, it's fantastic that the developers included that option. I made sure to use it. Worked perfectly for Twitch, but I still had issues with TH-cam. People shouldn't let that detract from the awesome music though. It would have been wrong for me to not mention the problems however. :)
@@ObsidianAnt Oh totally agree. I know it was annoying Travis to have TH-cam doing that. Their content ID scanner has an itchy trigger finger. Thanks for the great (and balanced) review.
