  • A few years ago, I tested several inexpensive amps bought off eBay and found there were crazy claims made with unimpressive results. Recently, I've noticed a new batch of inexpensive amp boards, yet this time with more reasonable claims. I've purchased several amps I'll be testing in upcoming videos, but first up is the $10 TPA3116 mono subwoofer amplifier. Yes, I said $10...including shipping! This amp is rated to deliver 100 watts to a 2 ohm subwoofer. You know how we roll, let's see what this amp is all about!

      @wal  7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I agree, perfect little amps for home made boomboxes or even for retrofitting into old boomboxes. Again, main issue is 24 volts, but you could get by with 12 volts if you don't need as much power. Pretty cool they can handle such a wide range of input voltages

    • @PixelUser

      I've been watching another TH-camr JohnAudioTech test these little amps for a while and have not seen him do the TPA3116 amps yet and I love playing with unique amps, so I decided to pick up a few. I must say, the 2.1 models seem to be a perfect match for a custom boombox. This one I tested here would power a 6.5 or maybe 8" sub well for a small room.

  • @claysonwebster1622
    @claysonwebster1622 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    awesome video man you should definitely do more of those amps

    • @wal
      @wal  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I bought 6 or 7 of them, many were the 2.1 models (rated 50x2 and 100x1). Some were RCA input only, others were 1/8" input only and a couple are BT only. I've noticed the BT models have noise issues. I guess it should be expected for a $15 amp rated 50x2 and 100x1 with built-in Bluetooth module! I'm going to probably compare the similar amps, will test them all, but most likely not individual videos. I guess it really depends on the popularity of the videos and how many people want to see these amps.

    got this thing together with a splitted one for my ~ 200W 2.1 system. did build it with some high end high and mid range speakers and a 150W RMS Kevlar Subwoofer ... at just 1/5 of bass my neighbors going berserk on me. system in total cost me around 120$ (100$ for speakers, 20$ for the 2.1 amp). and BTW I got some high end system from Logitech and Bose, both around 200-300$ but my self made system is still my favorite one. only minus is that its slightly hissing when no audio is plugged in. but that's the only thing

    Another great video! Thank you for testing such a wide variety of amplifiers. The ratings on these amps are based on the heat they dissipate -- not the power they produce. If you can squeeze 50% of the rated power out of these then you have a quality amp.

    • @wal
      @wal  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It sure appears that way by the specs of the chips, but the sellers are advertising them in a way that would make the consumer think these are the actual wattage output. Either way, now we know the truth

    Did some tests on a TPA3116D2 sub amp. 2 ohm non inductive load 24 volts supply they will do just 100 watts at around 1% THD. Problem is the inductors on most of these Chinese amps just aren't up to the task well among other things. The TPA3116D2 chip itself can do the business if you can find a decent board. The way the batteries in this test were wired together would have caused a voltage drop, I mean stuffing wires in holes is not really a good connection.

  • @easyamp123
    @easyamp123 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    lol, I like the make line on your results sheet @8:40 "some chinese dude". Nice video. The tda3116 is the name of the board, and tpa is the chip as there are no tda3116 ic's that i've ever heard of.

    Yo BigD, nice video as usual, hope you'll get around to doing some more cheap stuff videos. It's great seeing the cheap stuff getting so close to rated power. Someone asked about running it on batteries, I got something like that going in a salvaged parts project, but while it makes a lot of noise, its quality is laughable, all reused broken parts. I would make a video but I higly doubt anyone would be interested. You said something about retiring in a comment response, are you that old? you don't seem like it, maybe you were talking about the later future and I misunderstood. Anyway, cheers and keep making great videos for as long as you can, you're doing a great job!

    Given that "TDA" is a common prefix on other amplifier ICs, it's likely that "TDA3116" refers to the actual IC (as indicated on the silkscreen on the PCB), and TPA3116 refers to the whole module (or may have been a misprint.)

    I have the Nobsound NS-08G TPA3116 2.1 amp its a much different build to this amp and id say it quite powerful as im using 2 Q acoustics 15-75w speakers and one sony subwoofer from a 5.1 system and that's rated for 130w rms and this amps really uses all of the subwoofers potential at 24V At 5amps so much so I can bottom out the subwoofer quite easily without even maxing out the amp especially using a tuned equalizer this with the subwoofer volume set to 40% on the amp also and around 45% master volume power and the speakers gets used quite well also can max out these speakers without any distortion.

    I put a small amp like this in my logitech sub when its board went bad. And it would overheat when the volume was too loud so I put the little amp in the speaker's port so air would blow over the heatsink XD and that actually solved the problem lol

  • @rickc2222
    @rickc2222 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you think this is powerful enough to drive 2 x 8" or 2 x 10" subs in parallel @ 2 ohms at moderate listening levels when used in a personal 2.1 system for music/gaming? (not planning on using for entertainment or turning it up loud).

    The power connector that they use will drop voltage for sure. Also the filter inductors they use are another weak point. The TPA3116D2 is becoming one of my fav chips for these cheap amps. It just sounds decent for the prices paid.

      This particular model has a low-pass filter and is designed for low frequency speakers only. There are several other models including 50x2 models that would work great for the two 6.5's (and the amp is full range)

    Is this output bridged from 2 channels on TPA3116? Little low power on 19V input for bridged mode but I might be wrong. What is the roughly cut-off frequency on the low pass filter on this? Thanks for the review. It is awesome.

    The input limit reaches 3v same as the tpa3118 full range mono.
    Phones or rca's cant fully drive it even if it is at the max voltage of 26v.
    Unless your stereo can push more than 500mv on plugs.
    I have one tpa3116d2 full range stereo amplifier with signal booster that I modified to no hizz, for my homemade Bluetooth speaker with a dewalt battery and Bluetooth module and a dc-dc voltage booster 12-26V.
    Also I replaced my Yamaha amplifier with 2 TPA3118 mono block boards dc-dc voltage booster 12-24V driving 2 shelf book speakers sharp CP-C3900 150Wrms and they thump... Happy with both systems.

    Thanks for testing these! I was thinking about building a bluetooth ottoman, looks like 36v and a "50+50+100watt" will push mids, tweets, and a dedicated sub very well! what was the draw at 24v?

    • @wal
      @wal  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Chris Lesmerises most of the TPA3116 based 2.1 amps want about 25v max (be careful as some have 25v caps, most should have 35v). Current draw on sub channel was around 4 amps at clipping

      @ChrisLesmerises 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know it's not quite apples to apples, but I'm looking at a 36 volt 2.1 Bluetooth board :) Thank you for keeping notes, you've surely saved me an R&D revision, at the least, saved me some test parts!

      +Chris Lesmerises I just got a 32v version using the ST508 chip and is rated 80x2 and 160x1. I bought about 7 different models of the amp boards. Most were TPA3116, but a few were different. I've noticed the BT models are a bit noisy. There are mods to lower the input gain. Still amazes me what you can get for so little $$ 🤔

    Can I use a similar amp like that to put in a smart speaker that stopped working? It's already wired for a battery pack and 18v plug in power. An Altec Lansing Stream X speaker... it just stopped working one day. I figured maybe just wire one of those up to the speakers and battery pack and power input from the cord and it should work??? I'd like to find one with Bluetooth and about 30 Watt

    Don’t forget they run best if your power supply has adequate amps as well . Anything under 3.5 amps really won’t be powerful enough and will effect the performance of the amp board

      This one has a crossover and does low frequencies only. There are 50x2 and larger full range versions out there, just note the voltage they require to reach full output. Most require 24 volts, some require 32 or even over 40 volts depending on the model.
