Never heard of the band but their name and Mat's covers pretty much guarantees goodness. The eponymous play is an absolute gore fest with body count in the thousands. There's human sacrifice, the hero's daughter gets her hands and tongue cut off, the hero kills her rapists and then feeds them to their mother in a pie. Wild Bill Shakespeare knew how to throw down.

I visited graves of my grandparents last week, and I realise that this song is a pure gold and great message to people. I feel that line: The ones love us best are the ones we'll lay to rest, and visit their graves on holidays at best. The ones love us least are the ones we'll die to please.
Also Bukowski have such a quote: We're all going to die, all of us, what a circus! That alone should make us love each other but it doesn't. We are terrorized and flattened by trivialities, we are eaten up by nothing.

It was the late 80’s and I was a frail 4-5 year old with chicken pox. My mother’s younger brother lived with us and was a complete music freak (and the best uncle on the planet). He knew I never slept and when my parents would go to bed he’d bring me out into the living room of our cozy double wide trailer and show me music. I was a weird child with autistic tendencies but he was the one that figured out earliest that music would reach me. He showed me all the bands he was into on those nights. Huskier Du, Beat Happening, XTC, Van Halen, Whitesnake. Uncle Chris didn’t care about genres, he loved anything with a great sounding guitar. I remember seeing this video a couple of times in those days and then quickly forgot it. Until I was in high school and MTV featured it in some “greatest music videos ever” countdown. I was transported back to those days and The Replacements quickly became my favorite band in high school. Uncle Chris died in 2009 but every time I hear this I think of him and the love of music he gave me which brought me out of my shell. I owe him and this band an incredible debt of gratitude I’ll never be able to repay.

This was cutting edge alternative back then in the '80s when a lot of the new bands were coming out of Minneapolis (like the Replacements, Live and Husker Du) or Athens like REM, Dreams So real, Pylon, etc; a few years before the grunge movement out of Seattle took off with Nirvana and Pearl Jam! I agree they were fabulous...and "Trouble Boys" is a difficult read. I saw them on a good night...funny, playing well, smiling and enjoying, and rocking a small club. I booked them to play " The Boardwalk" in Manchester in 1990., and placed flyers on cars to attract people to the show
It's a small sum now to Mr Westerburg, but he owes me £670.

I saw these guys at an all-ages show when Tommy Stinson (bass player) was 14. It remains one of the seminal shows I've ever been to. The 'Mats were the epitome of the 'we don't give a fuck, love us or hate us but we're playing our asses off' bands. Unfortunately, when an 'underground/punk/alterative, whatever you want to call it' gets attention from a major label - and it's happened to many bands - they implode with the success.
