Miles Dyson is a great character. In just a short period of screen time he comes across as intelligent, a loving family man, courageous, and determined. I always wondered if he was modeled after Lieutenant Commander Ronald Macnair who died in the Challenger explosion.
Eh, questionable. Dyson redeems himself, but he was pretty skeevy before that. He knew Cyberdyne was up to some incredibly-shady shit, but he turned a blind eye so he could play with their toys. Not exactly the actions of a responsible person.
@@michaelccozens that passionate monologue he gives his wife about the automated pilot never getting tired, probably points to the extent of his idea of what the technology would be used for. I'm sure if he categorically knew the technology would be harnessed to eliminate mankind, he'd at least express some misgivings about it all.
Almost all of the effects in this movie are practical, including almost all of the stunts like the drainage channel chase and the helicopter chase, and even most of the scenes with the T-1000 being deformed from damage. But it's shocking that the T-1000's effects still hold up so well today.
and when the T-1000 copies a person and both are on screen at the same time, that was done with identical twins, including Linda Hamilton and her twin sister.
Indeed, really great use of practical effects and tricks (like using Linda's twin sister and a double for Arnold in the scene where they had to reset Arnold). The only complain I have with the Terminator makeup was the ending scene where his left arm was already gone. It's obvious that his real left arm is hiding under the jacket because of the bulk. I would imagine this was really difficult to hide given that Arnold has big muscular arms. haha. Other than that, really well done! T2 effects is so good that it beats a lot of recent movies that use CGI heavily ('cause most CGI effects don't look natural when overused and not done correctly).
@@gundummies CGI is really only still easily noticed in organic stuff, inorganic stuff is hardly ever noticed. I personally like the liquid metal effects in the newer movies, because it looks more accurate. Just like the real use of mercury in this movie when the beads of it are rolling around together far outdoes the CGI liquid metal in the movie.
The reason the T1000's feet are forming to where he's walking and you see the ripple effect in his face is not so much because of the heat but because he's beginning to break down/malfunction after being damaged and reforming so many times.
While I agree, I kinda like how T3 closed the loop of inevitably, and "time travel" in this movie universe cannot be changed , the film had issues of course but the premise was great
yep, this is the end. This movie is so perfect that no other Terminator movie can reach this level. And hasn't so far ... all further sequels are not really worth watching. T2 is one of those action movies which only happen once a decade: Aliens, Die Hard, T2, Total Recall, The Matrix, Mad Max Fury Road, John Wick I also recommend "True Lies" ...
Yeah, I wouldn't recommend Duaffy watching the rest of the Terminator sequels. They aren't anywhere near as good as the first two. They just drag out the story, and then they use time travel shenanigans to reboot and retcon the story so much that you no longer care about what's happening.
I have to disagree. Yes, T3: Rise of the Machines is inferior, because it tries to rehash the same thing all over again. But I feel like after that, they learned. Terminator: Salvation was a fascinating perspective on things, with incredible FX and sound design. Terminator: Genisys, ok, that one's kinda T3-like, but it's not a _bad_ movie by any means. And Terminator: Dark Fate was great!
@@sandwiched Terminator 2 is a must see. But if you plan to it is not bad to watch the first movie before. Terminator 3 is an entertaining movie and is not bad for it's own, but can't stand the quality of Terminator 2 and you will be disapointed if think it will be as epic as the second part. A 3rd movie was not needed, but is an interessting one if you watch it for one time. Genesys I would say is allright, but do not feel like a real Termator movie. It is more like a spin off. Genesys is fun but haven't any good story or is very deep. Dark Fate I did not really like. It was like some other movies that try to have some old main actors in it old days and try to recreate something you can't copy anymore.
The only thing I found good about T3, was exploring how a different terminator could be, but mostly I thought after watching it, it was not only not necessary, it didn't live up to the expectations created by the first two.
I can agree with the sequel movies not being as good. I personally had a lot of fun with Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. It ignored all movies after T2 and told it's own story. Plus it had great characters, Summer Glau and Lena Headey where amazing.
The ending to the theatrical version is considered better as the movie ends on a black rain soaked road like her monologue before as Sarah gives a speech about hope rather than what they did here.
I am pretty sure the extended version on my "ultimate" dvd ends with the dark road monologue and the happy ending is a part of the extra material. Edit: And yes it is alot better

My friend's brother said, "I can't wait for Terminator 2 this summer. It's gonna be 2 hours of constant action!" I thought that sounded pretty good. It was, however, A LOT better than just "2 hours of constant action". I really love the weird little family unit of John, Sarah, and the Terminator.
Poor Duaffy. Giving all the reasons why this is a perfect movie that doesn't need a sequel, and feeling exactly how the rest of us felt when Terminator 3 came out...
It took 7 years in the making for this sequel. CGI was not advanced when the first one came out, but Cameron's the Abyss came out in 89 and use cgi to test how it looks. He knew it was the right time to use CGI for the T2. However CGI was not the only reason it took years to make this film. There was also dispute about the property right of the film that had been going between hemdale film corporation and and Carolco pictures which eventually hemdale gave the right carolco for $ 5 million.
The CGI artist actually wrote a software specifically for this movie (or for some scenes) and it is still today challenging to replicate because the details of that software were never disclosed. There's a channel of guys making special effects who tried to recreate the scene where the T1000 passes through bars using different techniques but they still didn't get a result that was as smooth.
It's a silly limitation when you think of it, it is so easy to get around (as the Terminator itself proves), you just need to send the weapons back inside a living organism (dog, human, whatever).
@@pedanticperson1149 Actually funny you should say that. In the Robocop vs Terminator comic wayyyy back, I remember that's exactly what they did. The terminators sewed some hand weapons inside a human prisoner, then ripped em out when they arrived.

The one thing that truly pulls on my heart strings in this movie is the scene where John, Sarah, Terminator are fleeing mental hospital in the car after evading liquid terminator. Sarah motions to John for what looks like a motherly embrace but all she wanted to do is examine him for injuries. John was crestfallen. He was expecting a motherly embrace with affection. It was a gut punch for him.

Duaffy, Shooting the T-1000 slows him down just a bit due to physics. The impact o the bullet on his "body" mean his "body" must move in a reactive way. Like when Arnold shot him in the hip, it took his leg out from under him for a moment to making him recover first then continue moving on.
"By now, she's probably assuming that her son is _dead."_ Oh, no. They had told her that her son was _missing._ She knows this much about the methods of the T-800; it does not clean up remains. If it had found her son and killed him, they would've _found_ him and told her he was _dead._ The fact that they _hadn't_ left her room to believe he was not only still _alive,_ but aware he was being _hunted,_ and _hiding,_ and no doubt, employing methods she had made it a point to make sure he had _learned._
This movie is such a classic. It's one of the all-time greatest action movies ever. The opening in the future with the Terminator's glowing red eyes burning a hole into your soul, the motorbike chase, the hospital escape, the scary-as-hell T-1000 with special effects that still hold up really well today. All of it incredible.
The actress who plays Sarah Connor, whose name escapes me right now, has an identical twin, so the scenes where there's two of them, there's actually two of them 😎
Yes! And in the scene where Sarah fixes T-800's CPU in the "mirror," they built a mirrored set on the far side with a clear window in between. On the far side, Linda Hamilton is pretending to dig around in Arnold's brain. In the foreground, Linda's identical twin sister Leslie is digging around in a prop T-800 head and mirroring Linda's motions and speech.
Interesting trivia for you, Duaffy. They had to reshoot the garage scene at the mall several times, because Robert Patrick kept catching the motorcycle!
I also love the one where Robert learned how to fire the handgun without blinking. Even Arnold blinked in the first Terminator when he was firing his gun (though he WAS praised by weapons experts on his handling of the different guns he used).
"He can't keep himself solid. It's too hot." Honestly, this has never ocurred to me. I thought the idea was that his system glitched because of the liquid nitrogen thing. Interesting insight. ^^
Yes he took damage in the explosion. It has nothing to do with an inability to stay solid. The glitch is that he can't help copying anything he's touching. His face takes on the grillwork texture, his feet take on the floor texture. Not a liquid/solid issue. His mimic software is damaged.
well the T-1000 was a prototype...and prototypes ALWAYS have a flaw somewhere. the liquid nitrogen caused its ability transform to not function properly...and that was how it lost.
The Special Director's Cut of this movie has the perfect ending, so you can ignore all the rest of the nonsensical movies, on a fun fact Robert Patrick (T-1000) trained to fire a gun to almost never blink in order to look more emotionless and machine like.
He also trained to be physically fit, like he trained himself to run and not be exhausted. That's why when you see him run in the movie, he looks rigid - looking like he's not breathing & keeping a straight face. In the shooting of the chase scene in the galleria parking, he even actually caught up to John's motorbike irl. Such a badass.
Any instructor tells you not to blink or flinch while shooting, or you miss. He had to go above anybody else to not show anything. He owned this iconic role.
Hard to believe I found your gaming channel about a year ago, where you were posting your reactions. You're still one of the few channels I follow and this is one of my favourite movies of all time!!! Worth the wait.
Everyone forgets that T-800 loses an arm in the gear, actually T-1000 pushes him in to the gear insuring that there’s something to be reverse engineered by humans and although it’s crushed they were already working whit a crushed chip.
Fun Facts: 1. The actor playing as the T-1000 (Robert Patrick), when he chased after the bike running, he had to be told several times by the director to "slow down" because he was able to catch up to the bike from being too fast 😄 2. Skynet is afraid of the T-1000. It's the most intelligent infiltration unit it ever made, virtually indestructible to all forms of physical damage and able to easily mimic human emotions, it was a super fast learner, so Skynet stopped making them from fear it would learn empathy and then learn how to beat Skynet
I always loved how the T-1000 is clearly more intelligent and doesn't have the more basic intelligence the T-100 has. It taunts people, it shows emotions like fear and anger. I wish they'd made the third movie about this theory I've seen, where Skynet developed empathy over time and intentionally made the time machine to prevent itself from ever being created.
Robert Patrick (the guy who plays the liquid T1000 terminator) trained so hard for the role, its insane how terrifying he is. He trained to not blink even when rapid firing guns, so much that he only blinks ONCE the whole movie, where he first fires his whole magazine at Arnie, and he was actually upset that they didn't have time to reshoot it. He trained to not pant or show his breathing when running. And he ran so fast that in the first take when John Conner tries to escape him on the bike, he CAUGHT THE BIKE. Imagine the first time you see the actor that is meant to be hunting you down, and he outruns a motorbike.
The people burning in that clip? They're the lucky ones. Further away, and you get to suffer the agonizing days- or weeks-long death of radiation poisoning, as the "Chernobyl" series illustrated so well (and they toned-down the gore and suffering in that depiction significantly). Nobody should have nuclear weapons. We're objectively not responsible enough.
Dyson's death haunted me in 1991. I was 9 years old and it took me forever to get past it... Then... fast forward to 2021... I watched my own father pass away and take his last breath. And it's VERY accurate on how Dyson does it.
'Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles' series picks up after T2 and goes in it's own direction from the other sequels. Much better than T3. I loved it.
That TV show was a wild ride.. And the female terminator in season 2 she was amazingly played and seemed so real till you found out she was a terminator.. A far more advanced model than the T-1000 also might i add
3:50 You have beautiful long hair too! 12:29 You have to wonder how such a sick pervert ever got a job with vulnerable people. 15:43 ((hug)) They should not have made a third movie, the story is complete here.
Your reaction at 21:50....... And that you couldn’t see Miles Dyson’s sacrifice..... That’s the most genuine reaction I’ve ever seen. I, too, felt so very bad for him. Watching that scene in theaters 30 years ago, I didn’t like that his character had to die. That scene where Sarah Connor wanted to kill him and seeing his sad reaction that he was gonna die in front of his family-still to this day-is heartbreaking.😔💔 Miles Dyson wasn’t an evil scientist who knew anything about Skynet. He was someone who was very passionate about his work and just wanted to do something better for the world. And it costs him his life.
This is definitely the best one I've seen. I haven't checked out Dark Fate yet, but have literally never heard anything good about it either so I'm not expecting it to surpass this film.
For me, best Sci-Fi Action movie is Blade Runner (1982). Best Sci-Fi movie period, in my humble opinion. But only if you accept that Deckard is NOT a replicant. If he's a replicant, as Ford contends, then the movie is pointless.
"Other than that, I couldn't come up with an idea" Don't worry, neither could they. T2 was a perfect bookend to the 2 movies, and honestly none of the sequels come remotely close and (to me) feel like a cash grab on the Terminator name and I wouldn't bother watching them. Though, I did hear that the TV series - The Sarah Connor Chronicles - was good
In Spain, the phrase is actually "sayonara, baby", cos "hasta la vista" was too obvious. And a part of the latest one was filmed in Lavapiés, here in Madrid, about 5 minutes walk from my house. And I found out too late!

HE IS NOT HERE TO KILL HIM ?! thank you very much Duaffy keep on the good work you make my day with every reaction, i hope your channels grow and have a long life span.
The moment that still gets me to this day is when Sarah first sees the terminator in the mental hospital. Throughout the entire first part of the film, we see how much Sarah has changed from the meek woman she was in the original movie. She's hardened, fit, and ready to kick anybody's ass to get out of there and protect her son from Arnold. As soon as she sees him, though? All that goes right out the window and she reverts to the terrified, helpless woman in an instant. Brilliant acting by Linda Hamilton.
This was truly the Magnum Opus of the series. After this, I don't believe James Cameron was really too involved with the movies (maybe a producer at most, since it was his creation originally), so his vision was pretty well swept away after this.
I don’t wanna be “that guy” who gets negatively called out…but seriously I’d be a subscriber even if I had an accident and wound up blind…your voice is angelic
I agree. And I would say the original cut is better overall. There were several scenes I saw here where I was thinking , what is she watching? Where did these scenes come from. There is a reason there are editors. All of these additional scenes were left on the cutting room floor for a reason.
@@jjohnson4474 Sometimes, though, that reason is due to studio demands to keep the film under a certain length for maximized screening quantities and (by proxy) easier profits, at the expense of allowing things to fully make sense. @@moviemaestro800 Cameron said himself that the footage that was cut was for pacing and because it wasn't really needed to tell the story. Especially in the middle of the film in the space between the escape from the mental hospital and then the decision to kill Dyson, there is a big lull. He said he was glad that the footage could be restored to some cuts on the DVD release just so that people could see it, but that in watching it it should also be a lesson it what really is or is not necessary to tell a story. However... even on the Director's Cut version on the DVD... the original ending is still there along with the footage that was added in before it. The ending wasn't changed for pacing reasons it was changed because the terser more ambiguous ending they changed it to was a better ending. They only slapped on the alternate ending in later "extended cuts" of the film, and that wasn't Cameron's decision. I'm not even sure if Duaffy saw that version of the ending or not.. because she didn't include her reaction to it here and I'm not on Patreon so I didn't see the full thing.
Fun trivia: In one scene, Dougie the orderly had to hit Sarah in the stomach and she had to drop to her knees. @@michaelspence2508 Because it has deleted scenes. The director's cut is the same as the theatrical cut. Cameron seriously dislikes the extended cuts of T2.
@@jp3813 Nope, T2 is good, the rest are bad. The only good parts of the original are the ones James Cameron ripped off from Harlan Ellison, which got him sued and Ellison a writing credit. In fact, T2 is pretty easily the best movie Cameron has made, since most of his are bad.
In the foundry, when the T-1000 melts and mixes with the ground, it is not from the heat (if there were such intense heat as to melt metal in the middle of the corridors, both Sarah and John would die). What happens to him is that after so much shooting, breaking and recomposing himself so many times, he begins to malfunction. Explained by James Cameron in the DVD extras (yes, I have had the film for many years). Anyway, that part only comes out in the extended version, as well as Arnold's "smile", the T-1000 killing the dog and some more.
Terminator 2 is definitely the high point of the saga. I liked Terminator 3 but it's not nearly as good as the first 2 films and I wasn't real happy with the ending of T3. The TV show (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) ignored T3 and the other sequel films and I think the show (especially the pilot) is better than T3, etc.

Why is everyone react to the ultimate cut version? The theatrical cut version was so much better. These extra scenes plus the alternate ending actually makes the story weaker.
That's your opinion. The extended special edition director's cut is the accepted canon story and by far the best version. I dare even say that the theatrical cut is absolute garbage. The most memorable scenes aren't even in the theatrical version. They don't even destroy the lab in the original cut, completely negating everything they worked for to stop the war from happening.
So awsome to see someone watchin T2 for the first time. James Cameron knew exactly how to tell the story in a way, you wouldn't expect the Terminator is the hero in this movie.

Miles Dyson is a great character. In just a short period of screen time he comes across as intelligent, a loving family man, courageous, and determined. I always wondered if he was modeled after Lieutenant Commander Ronald Macnair who died in the Challenger explosion.
His death hits hardest in the movie.
Even the molten metal and lighting effects in the foundry are all practical.
Hold up, for the time it was made, yes. However, you can see how it's not as blended into the scene as the newer effects from other movies are.
He was just a prototype after all

yep, this is the end. This movie is so perfect that no other Terminator movie can reach this level. And hasn't so far ... all further sequels are not really worth watching.
T2 is one of those action movies which only happen once a decade: Aliens, Die Hard, T2, Total Recall, The Matrix, Mad Max Fury Road, John Wick
I also recommend "True Lies" ...

@Ricardo Alonso Rojas what? That film is genuinely disgusting
@Gerald H Yeah. Even though for a movie that came out 30 years ago, the CGI stills looks good.
ILM were also using the CG in T2 as a testing ground for Jurassic Park.

Shooting the T-1000 slows him down just a bit due to physics. The impact o the bullet on his "body" mean his "body" must move in a reactive way. Like when Arnold shot him in the hip, it took his leg out from under him for a moment to making him recover first then continue moving on.

That can happen when you hire a pro-track athlete to play him. ;)
"He can't keep himself solid. It's too hot."
Honestly, this has never ocurred to me.
I think I saw in a BTS video, James Cameron did say that it was the bout with the liquid nitrogen that is causing his glitches.
well the T-1000 was a prototype...and prototypes ALWAYS have a flaw somewhere. the liquid nitrogen caused its ability transform to not function properly...and that was how it lost.

He also held his breath during most of the actions (I don't think while he was running, but for the rest)
Any instructor tells you not to blink or flinch while shooting, or you miss.
He had to go above anybody else to not show anything. He owned this iconic role.

Amazing movie from start to finish! Great reaction as usual D! That "Thumbs Up" in the end is absolutely iconic!
Fun Facts: 1. The actor playing as the T-1000 (Robert Patrick), when he chased after the bike running, he had to be told several times by the director to "slow down" because he was able to catch up to the bike from being too fast 😄
Patrick also hit Arnold really hard with a crowbar and Arnold told him "don't do that again".

In Spain, the phrase is actually "sayonara, baby", cos "hasta la vista" was too obvious. And a part of the latest one was filmed in Lavapiés, here in Madrid, about 5 minutes walk from my house. And I found out too late!
Y la mitad de los actores eran españoles XD
I loved this video, you made me re-live my first time watching this in the 90s, and you reacted exactly like me when arnold told the kid to get down the first they met, i was like .... WHAT ?! HE IS NOT HERE TO KILL HIM ?! thank you very much Duaffy keep on the good work you make my day with every reaction, i hope your channels grow and have a long life span.
I loved this movie when i was a kid.
sequels can always be shoehorned in a story :)
And loved the way she screamed "noooo!"
This was truly the Magnum Opus of the series. After this, I don't believe James Cameron was really too involved with the movies (maybe a producer at most, since it was his creation originally), so his vision was pretty well swept away after this.
Agreed! This is my favorite of the Terminator franchise.
I don’t wanna be “that guy” who gets negatively called out…but seriously
I’d be a subscriber even if I had an accident and wound up blind…your voice is angelic
Yes. There is no third, or Salvation, or Genisys, or Dark Fate.
The original cut ending is better than this extended cut.
Certainly in the sense of keeping some effective dramatic ambiguity. It's just that, in hindsight, it could've also spared us all subsequent sequels.
@@moviemaestro800 nah that wouldn't have stopped them.
What's nice is that these added scenes are indeed not strictly necessary for the film to work as well as it does, but I think they're a nice bonus that makes some moments feel just a bit more rewarding. The additional scenes with Miles Dyson, for instance
The fact that Vasquez from Aliens is John Conner’s foster mom
Fun trivia: In one scene, Dougie the orderly had to hit Sarah in the stomach and she had to drop to her knees. The guy couldn't do a convincing job hitting her, but she still dropped to her knees take after take and it hurt a lot. So when it was her turn to smack him in the face with the mop handle, SHE DID. She beat the shit out of him. One take.
that's messed up, poor guy. If I was that guy I would have sued her and the movie for that crap
@@poluticon She did it to protect him.
So she's a shitty actor that shouldn't be doing stunts, then
Duaffy referring to the Terminators as ''colleagues'' is the best thing in this reaction.
"Best one yet from the saga"? No, no, there is no "yet". This one IS the best. You can tell me how you like three or Dark Fate or whatever, but none of that is better than this right here.
Dang, so refreshing to see someone who actually didn't know the twist.
29:15 You understimate the power of retcons.
I really liked that you watched the Directors Cut, because all of the deleted scenes add much needed context, EXCEPT the different ending is in no was as good as the Theatrical ending.
I definitely noticed this right away because I've literally never seen the director's cut and some takes were new to me... pretty cool
This isn't the director's cut, this is one of the extended cuts.
@@MarCuseus really? how can you tell? seriously asking
@@michaelspence2508 Because it has deleted scenes. The director's cut is the same as the theatrical cut. Cameron seriously dislikes the extended cuts of T2.
There were in fact several movies made, but in Arnold's words "they were all bad."
None of them are worth watching.
I thought the 3rd one was tolerable. But I wouldn't say to go out of your way for it.
It's like the Jurassic Park franchise: there's only one good movie in each series, but for some reason people keep watching the bad ones, too.
@@michaelw8262 The Terminator franchise has two great movies.
@@michaelw8262 If T1 was bad, T2 wouldn't have been made to begin with.
"I would not expect a third Terminator."
That's right, only 2 were made and they're both awesome.
This is indeed the last Terminator movie.
If someone says otherwise, they're just wrong.
Absolutely correct.
Chuck Norris would beg to differ.
FYI Linda Hamilton had a twin sister. She did some of the scenes where there was two Sarah Connors in this movie (it wasn't CGI or camera tricks).
She passed away in 2020 at age 63.... RIP Leslie Hamilton Gearren.
Robert Patrick ad the t1000 was epic. Taught himself to fire his weapon without blinking and run full speed without breathing. Because that's how a terminator would do it. Just such massive levels awesome badassery.
29:10 we all agree. No need to keep watching. The series ended here.
22:03..It really touches me when you salute Miles when he dies, you do have a soft heart for these occasions when good people die and you close your eyes so you can"t see it.
