The world lost an irreplaceable artist. Someone who had magic in his hands and heart, transferring it onto every canvas he painted on. I can’t believe I discovered Mr. Gonsalves’ work after his untimely passing. Would love to have had a conversation with him about him and his work. He seemed like a gentle, caring, intelligent soul. He will be dearly missed. Thank you for all that you’ve done, sir.

I met Rob and his partner Lise a number of years ago now. The first time it was at a party where l was rarely at f’d the dance floor nor were Rob and Lise! He had a great sense of humour. We had a couple of get together which l enjoyed. I bought some of his books as gifts. One time he and Lise came to my Christmas show. I had recently discovered a band l really loved. I knew Rob and Lise were music lovers. Out of the blue l said” Have you ever heard of a band called Dead Can Dance?” Rob kind that of looked at me in surprise and said “ They’re my favourite band!” It was just one of those unexpected moments….
I was shocked when l got news of his passing. His partner Lise told me that he’d been suffering from severe depression. She said “ You wouldn’t have known him Wendy- he changed so much”. I state this with the utmost respect. Lise was open about his depression. Such a huge loss. Rob, l hope that you are someplace special dancing, imagining Lise joining you in the dance………

Thank you so much for sharing this. It helps a lot of us find a vague sense of closure if that makes sense at all.
If you happen to know how he decided to spend his last moments more details would be appreciated.
I have loved his work since I was very young and just found out about his passing an hour ago.
      It hurts a lot.

@@JEBEmpires I didn’t see Rob and Lise socially very often but clearly remember our get togethers. One thing for sure, when we ended up at the same parties, it was all about the dancing with Rob and Lise and me. Of course there were others dancing too, but not for every dance! lol. I only know from Lise that Rob was very depressed when l went to pay my respects at their home. Again, Lise said “You wouldn’t have known him Wendy”. I did not ask Lise any questions, nor would l have. It was a sacred time. He had mental health issues. He took his life. He left behind a partner whom he loved dearly and pets he loved dearly. I can speculate but even that is sacred. It is also not for me to say. I ran into Lise recently. She lives not far from me and l told her I’d visit. Rob was brilliant and fun. Lise is an amazing artist herself. I have a Christmas card that they sent years ago, with them wearing goofy Xmas hats, grinning from ear to ear. The card goes up every Christmas! I haven’t watched the documentary and l don’t know why because I’d like to and will try to but l am not tech savvy. Something l forgot to mention that you probably already know is that Rob’s paintings went into two beautiful books. A woman did the writing for the book. Rob received the Governor General’s Award for his art in the second book. Also, one day in Chapters, l picked up a large art book that l think had Escher on part of the cover. I can’t think of the term for that trick of the eye that Escher and other artists are famous for but lo and behold, as l went through the book, Rob Gonsalves was featured in it and l felt proud of him and further realized the depth of his talent. I don’t know how you admired Rob’s work from your childhood, but l am guessing you are really young and perhaps lived in Toronto when Rob lived there. I wish you well. Sincerely, Wendy.

These paintings are seem to mirror the effects of the first wave of a trip, reality actually morphs in tbe same way, I've only had two trips when I was younger, one thing looks slightly like something else, then it becomes that thing, then that thing draws other connections, and bamm... you have no direct connection to reality.
