I always liked this version of Lamont better. His constant sarcasm, and back in forth with Fred was always hilarious to me. I heard a rumor they softened his character up in the later years, because some of the fans of the show were complaining his character was too disrespectful to his father on the show, and they thought it was a bad portrayal of a father son relationship.
Well, the show became boring after his character became nicer. The essence of the show was the conflict between the two of them but the both of them still needing each other.
For those calling Lamont a player hater..he didn't hate Donna thinking she'd take his mother's place and all that...she kicked him out of the apartment he was renting from her after he had brought a woman to the apartment, breaking her "no visitors after 11pm" rule
Jeffrey j no they were not, Lawanda ( aunt Esther) had a younger sister called Lynn Hamilton which is the same name as Donna, so people often confused Donna who’s real name is also Lynn Hamilton as Lawanda’s sister.
I have the collection and we watch an episode or two every night with my 90 y/o Grandfather. He lol's through the whole thing almost every time. Redd Foxx was the man for sure!

@@Juliaflo Yes! They always had excellent guest appearances on the show. The AITF episode "The Swingers" had the gal from Golden Girls. Makes sense I guess because the character "Maude" was on GG too.

This was something I never understood .Lamont was so mean to Donna and she was a nice lady .I could understand if she treated Fred like garbage but there was no excuse .He cost his dad some happiness .He was suppose to be mature enough to handle a parent getting involved with someone else
Lamont knew Donna was playing Fred but Fred wouldn’t take it. For instance, once she brought a younger man to dinner at Fred’s place and a jealous fight erupted between the two men. Now, what woman would do that if she was clean breasted about things?!?
Lamont couldn't stand Donna from the beginning by seasons later he eventually began to warm up to her gladly enough they got along real well on the show
I didn’t particularly care for Lamont in the earlier shows. Back in the day, fans wrote in and complained about the way Lamont treated Fred. He would call him names, push him, yell at him, he was greedy, selfish etc. As years went on, they softened Lamont’s character. Which made the father/son relationship more believable. He wasn’t very likable in the earlier episodes.
That was the original premise of the show was the two of them constantly at odds with each other but the both of them needing each other. The show became dull and boring after they changed his character.
@@rickyv7757 True, that was the original premise. It was a remake of the British sitcom “Steptoe and Son”. In the earlier shows, they pretty much took the scripts from the original show and put them on “Sanford”. However, it would’ve never sustained with Redd and Demond’s characters bickering for 5 seasons. The characters had to evolve in order for the viewers to continue to want to watch them. It made the characters more vulnerable and believable when they became closer. It made the show universal too.
@@ghanasoul you do need character progression however the best comedic scenes and episodes are when the two were at odds with each other. The show became dull later on in the final couple of seasons when lamont became mellow and passive. As for Lamont being mean towards fred, that seems like a very one-sided way of looking at things and shows people may just have favored Redd Foxx more. While Lamont was rude and disrespectful, fred degraded lamont and sabatoged him multiple times. But the idea was to highlight their dysfunctional relationship but still show that had a strong loving bond despite it all. So you had to have the bickering and the fighting at some point, although to your point, both characters needed to grow over time.
No no no no Fred take that thing off your head your own hair is just fine, here let me come over there and gently comb your hair out if you're tender headed.

Super boring.. once Lamont trimmed down his afro and mustache the show became very generic.
Same here. It was a much better show. They soften Lamont and harden Fred, just wasn't the same show.
Never thought of it.
The arguments were a lot funner.

Lamont needs to let his mother go. SO, he could move on, and she'll be a peace.
Donna was such an elegant and delightful lady, Every one would love her.

What a great episode. It's well put together.
Donna had gorgeous hair!
Lamont Sanford and Sgt Carter are the two best supporting characters ever IMO. Both were chosen by producer Aaron Ruben.
Demond Wilson played a criminal that robbed the Bunkers on All In The Family. Hilarious!
