  • I was very fortunate to be asked to give a talk to my local fish club, the Greater Seattle Aquarium Society about how I went from relative nobody to "HAP Assassin." In my 4 years of participation within GSAS's Horticulture Awards Program, I have completed the Master Aquatic Horticulturalist title 10 times - this talk goes over what I learned and how I did it.

    Awesome presentation! I need to watch this again and take notes. When I setup this tank, I put a small bag of aquasoil on the bottom and capped it with pool filter sand. Then I bought a fluval Aquasky 2 weeks ago. I'm using your shallow summer day setting. I've never had crypts root and grow this quickly. My jungle Val is doing amazing. Java Fern....meh. No algae on the anubias. Even my frogbit has been getting healthy growth.

    What is this brown slime algae in my reineckii red plants ? How can I get rid of it ? Using Seachem dosing chart. Use Fluval 3.0 lights. On 8 hours per day with one hour ramp up and one hour ramp down. Light settings: Red-87% Blue-5% whites-100%. I feed my discus 2 times per day. Can’t seem to keep it away. Ph is 6.2 to 6.8. Water change 50% once per week. Gh/Kh 4 to 6. Nitrates Nitrites Ammonia all 0. Heavily planted tank with co2 injection.

  • @louiegroenewald
    @louiegroenewald ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you mean by spreading out fertilizer I put the same amount as I do once on weekly basis over a few days. Ex. I add 20ml to a tank once a week upon weekly maintenance and water change. Instead I must add like 5 mil every few days adding up to the 20 ml weekly. I do not have algae problems, but start to notice that plants do not perform and grow as in beginning. All my tanks is more than 6 months old some even 1 year and couple of months. Myself not even 2 year in hobby and sit with 14 tanks. Loving it like crazy. Regards fertilize questions. My tanks are fairly over stocked with fish. I use a All in one liquid from local fish shop that works out most cost effective currently regards to dosing all tanks. According to some research it looks like I need more Potassium and a bit of Iron.
    Also I need to know about increasing fertilizer dosing. In beginning there was slightly less plants. As weeks and months progress I kept on adding more plants. All easy light kind of plants as I run very low-tech. I started to reduce my lights strength as I noticed one tank where plants grow well the light is not as strong. But I do not see difference yet. Therefore thinking of adding more potassium and iron separately. Do I need to increase dosing of all in one fertilizer. My product mentions how many ml to add to liter volume of tank. It does not say because there is more plants I need to double dosage. Example. Is stead of adding 20ml weekly like mentioned above. Do I need to start to add 40ml weekly?

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Let me try to answer this in a couple parts. So your first question about spreading out the fertilizer. The way that you described is exactly correct. If you need a 20 ml a week and you spread it over 5 ml doses for times a week that's more in line with what I'm describing.
      Now as far as your increase dosing question, you don't necessarily double but what you might do as your plants are growing out is say increase by a percentage. So let's say again, you're using that 20 ml a week and your plants have about doubled in size. Then what I would start doing is looking at instead of dosing 20 milliliters dosing either 25 or 30 ml per week. What we're looking to do is make sure that we're not putting so much into the water system that the plants are no longer consuming it and that algae can then take over, but we need to boost it a little bit to make sure that we don't run into some kind of deficiency.
      Just keep in mind when you trim your plants back. If you're not replanting the trims you'll need to bring that dosage down a little bit because you don't have quite as much plant matter anymore. If you are replanting the trims then stay at that slightly higher amount. One way to make this really easy is just use a simple test strip and monitor your nitrates. If your nitrates start climbing a lot, you're dosing too much. But if they stay relatively stable, say somewhere between 10 and 40 parts per million that's perfectly okay for water quality.
      I hope that helps!

    Bentley, I was watching a Co-op video a couple of weeks ago. Cory said he uses food or "Over Feeding," to help feed his plants. Do you have thoughts on that? I love this presentation. Was thinking of a 100lb bottle of CO2 on two very large tanks, would last for awhile. Thanks Bentley!

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think what Cory is saying is wrong, but there is a risk of having excessive phosphates using that method and that can lead to things like diatomal algae or several other types of algae. Also if you aren't supplementing at least with micronutrients then you run the risk of a lot of other potential deficiencies down the line.

    • @kerrypitt9789
      @kerrypitt9789 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BentleyPascoe understood. You would still need a regular fertilizer then. I think that was Cory's intention.

A few things i would of liked more information on was what aspects of plant growth does the other spectrums of light affect (pure white, warm white and cool white) And also the easiest way to supplement calcium & magnesium. Would cuttle bone in the substrate be an option for calcium?

    how to go by for lighting when you have epiphytic and stem plants in a aquarium

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  ปีที่แล้ว

      So in general, most of the epiphytic plants prefer low or medium light. Stemplants tend to prefer high and medium light. So it depends on the stems and specific epiphytes you using. You likely can get away with just having about medium light levels. And that should be sufficient for all of your plants. But if you have super high demand stems and then a bunch of the newbies, what you need to do is make the stems shade the anubius so that you can run highlight on the stems and that shading will bring it down to like medium or lower levels of light over the anubius as an example

  • @user-mv2oo4hc3j
    @user-mv2oo4hc3j 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    So basically when you buy plants you should acclimate them to your tank before planting them

    • @BentleyPascoe

      If plants need carbon ( I was thinking of burnt wood) but those diy tabs release to much ammonia why not combine the two and end up with a chunk of charcoal (actual chared wood not activated charcoal) in the substrate with ammonia in it that the plants can digest?
