An Informal Guide to Plants From a Master Aquatic Horticulturalist- My First Talk at a Fish Club

  • Unedited and simple, this is my informal talk about plants and how to do well with them for the North Sound Aquarium Society. This was my first ever full talk for a club and it took place in a restaurant's banquet room, so there is a touch of background noise.
    Does this talk get you all fired up for some plants? I started my planted tank addiction at Aquarium Co-Op... I may have even mentioned them a few times in the talk. If you're looking for plants that get converted ahead of time, there's no one else I'd recommend over them: bit.ly/2GXKHVG
    As I mention in the talk, I use Aquarium Co-Op's Easy green as my fertilizer of choice - you can pick that up here bit.ly/2HedDsc and it helps the channel!
    Thinking of doing CO2? Here's the diffusers I use in my tanks I mention in the talk: amzn.to/2Hifwo1
    Outside the US and can't get Easy Green? Another great fertilizer is Thrive: amzn.to/2Hifwo1
    Enjoying my content? Thank you so much for your time, if you'd like to support the channel more you can visit my Patreon: bit.ly/2IvPC1O

    I mention the one-two punch algae treatment toward the end of this talk, here's a link to that article: www.plantedtan...

    @48:00 So glad that you have addressed that. I am dealing with this shock right now. I bought 3 things off monte carlo, clearly grown emersed in a pot and likely in cold water. I live in florida and my room temperature is 77. 2 months and it is not dying but it is not thriving and not growing. All other plants I ever bought grow like mushrooms because of how they are grown. This came from some guy in minnesotta or something.

    Excellent talk!! I am forever indebted to Bentley, for teaching me that the Blue Spectrum of light grows algae. When I first got my Fluval 3.0, I was running all spectrums 100% and suddenly my tank was Split Pea Soup. By cutting back on the intensity and length of Blue I was using and eliminating the night time Blue light cycle, my Pea soup magically disappeared. Thank you again, Bentley!
    I wish Fluval included that info, in their directions ~

      Nothing to do with that, it's more that via comments it's hard to give detail (and receive enough info) to give the best information possible. Plus text losing things as each person reads them, where in person it's so much easier in conversation to get clarification and answer things. Cheers!

      Usually Master certificates come from local clubs and their horticulture awards program. It's super common within clubs in the US. Basically just grow a lot of different stuff, propagate it and flower what you can as well.

    The way you tell your story is very understandable and down to earth, I liked it very much. I try very hard to grow plants and have some succes but I keep failing on some species I like. Could you do a video about how you would handle a plant, for instance the species your working with now.?? I would like to see what you have to do to with a plant to " master" it.
    I m ok with all easy plants but when I try a more " demanding" plant I often loose it, yes I m working on my patience( most important I think) .
    Thanks so far and have a nice day.

      @@BentleyPascoe I did. I'm sure this will blow you away, but you take a leaf, make sure the stem part is still in the leaf and alive. Stick it in a good substrate and do not touch it. Leave it totally alone. You can do this with any stem plant, and I have successfully cut a stem off a sword plant and cloned it this way too. Nurii showing some success as well. Flamingo too early to tell. We need an aquatics horticulture FB page to chat and discuss these things.

    I've recently purchased bunches of Cyperus Helferi, sadly I didn't find many guides on it online maybe because it's not that common or popular in the hobby yet. It's like Valisneria nana but it doesn't spread throughout the tank which makes it very manageable. Are you experienced with this plant?

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've got it in the past and usually the way you would propagate it is by separating it at the root so you literally kind of pull it up. Almost like an eriocaulon, separate the child plants away and replant everything. In general. It's a relatively easy grass type plant and doesn't take anything too complicated to grow. It does appreciate more like medium light but that's about it.

      Cyanobacteria aka blue-green algae is usually best taken care of by dosing erythromycin into the tank. We call it algae, but it's actually a bacteria. Longer term prevention is all about water quality and high oxygen ratios in the water.

    A neat trick for getting a nice looking CO2 tank (when you start with a shiny new one) is be a woman, tell them it’s for your planted aquarium, and ask for a nice one.
    Realistically, I haven’t tried being a guy and just asking for a nice one...

  • @VyvienneEaux
    @VyvienneEaux 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As a scientist, the “dirted tanks are sub-par” bullshit is just sad. I’m sure you think that, but have you ever really bothered giving it a try? Did you do it correctly? Many experts recommend it, and I have had exceptional success with it. Aquatic plants don’t care about low oxygen levels in the soil, unlike terrestrial plants, and so they don’t mind the compacting. Aside from that, soil doesn’t compact underwater. It does the opposite. But go on, feel free to keep paying hundreds if dollars for soil that someone has ground, rolled with clay, and then compressed into pellets for your ease of use 🙄
    Also, you haven’t gone collecting, have you? If you did, go look at the substrate these plants grow in in nature.

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Given that the vast majority of aquatic plants grow emersed, not submerged, I think your near antagonist approach to comments is off base. Have I tried dirt? Yep. Dealt with a number of problems. You say experts recommend it, yet some of the absolute best plant people in aquaria, Karen Randall, Christel Kasselmann, Cara Wade all actively use and suggest aqua soil. These are professional botanists. People who are at the forefront of collecting in the wild.
