    People hate on Korra because her connection to her past lives was severed, yet they give Aang a pass for being killed while in complete control of the Avatar State. If Katara hadn't revived him, the Avatar cycle (not just the ability to connect with past lives) would've ended.
    -PS: Before people respond by saying "sneak attack", he still put himself in a vulnerable position

    • @pinasupernova5229
      @pinasupernova5229 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      the thing is that if Korra still had her past lives and called Aang during the rest of the show they still would have shitted on Korra because she is using the easy way out, she's being handheld by Aang and the other avatars. Not having the other avatars make Korra unique, new, and fresh.
      Korra and Tenzin's journey this season is about shredding every connection with the old ATLA (mostly Aang). And then in the 3rd season, you have a plot very similar to the old ATLA style but with a new perspective, Korra's. Where the final battle with this superpowerful foe happens in the same place as Ozai's battle and the avatar's allies (Sokka's squad/Airbenders & company) play a huge role in the battle

    This episode really solidifies to me that all the pressure to achieve greatness put upon Bumi, Kya, and Tenzin comes directly from the world projecting Aang's legacy on them and NOT Aang himself. It's more obvious with Tenzin becuase he, throughout the course of the series so far, has always seen himself as an extension of Aang rather than his own person. Kya and Bumi's resentment toward Aang also never came from Aang's personal expectations but from the world's expectations based their association with Aang.
    Also getting rid of the Past Avatars was a GREAT decision because it proves the writers didn't want to rely on cheap and easy fanservice to get fans to positively associate their nostalgia with The Legend of Korra. An episode where Aang walks Korra through his journey would be nostalgia bait.

    • @juliantheapostate2263
      @juliantheapostate2263 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Very much agree with your first paragraph, very much disagree with the second paragraph. For me it only indicated that the writers had no idea how to handle the past lifes creatively and were way too scared of Aang overshadowing Korra. There were many things they could have done with Aang as a spirit guide that would have not have felt like nostalgia bait and wouldn't have detracted from Korra as a character and as a show. And I really like LoK as a show in general, but that part always seemed to me a poor decision made for the wrong reasons.

      For me, the big downside was (not spoiling it but don't read ahead if you don't want hints at spoilers) the deus ex machina ending.
      She lost the avatar spirit and ends out winning against a dark avatar who was much more in touch spiritually than her through things... not exactly explained... or at least well.
      Also one thing that I really didn't like was the lack of balance as a theme. When I first saw it, the 'mistake' that Wan made which I thought was the whole point of the season was locking Vaatu away and ONLY having order/light as an influence on the world with chaos/darkness being just as needed. A yin yang deal. I thought the season would end with Korra realising that unalaak was not entirely wrong and Wan did unbalance the world and merge BOTH vaatu and raava into herself. Let the avatar LITERALLY be the person who holds the world in balance by containing both the light and dark spirits. Instead of just "vaatu, one of the two original spirits just shouldn't exist at all".

    • @jonathanjohnson6727

      what made Unavaatu so overwhelming is that Unalaqs individual spirituality was so great *and* it aligned perfectly with Vaatu. Which is why Korra had to grow and attain a greater sense of self that is separate from Raava(it felt rushed since it was the conclusion episode. Though it was similar to _The_ _Guru_ just condensed.) If you factor in that this period in time is literally the most spiritual of any point in the Avatar verse; think Sozins Comet for firebenders/full moon for waterbenders. You can see it clearer. And Korra does see the point made by Unalaq and mistake by Wan. Which is why she leaves the portals open and works toward bringing spirituality back into society(what you suggest could happen later on in Korra's cycle of Avatar or in the next cycle entirely)

      @@jonathanjohnson6727 DEFINITE SPOILERS: (thanks I like this header incase the Letts duo look into the comments)
      I completely agree that the reason Unavaatu was so seemingly overpowered compared to regular avatar was the unique mix of Unalaqs deep spiritual connect and the harmonic convergence being a massive spiritual power boost, my complaint is closer to the fact that Korra... who while having her moments has never been overly spiritual herself... was able to overcome Unavaatu with just her empowered spirit. Yes she had growth and I liked that she was forced to take some time without Raava to look at her own spirit but it is very much a toddler taking their first steps, too soon to overcome everything she did.
      Overall, don't hate the ending to the season, just like you said it was rushed due to ALOT happening in the final episode and felt very 'here is what happened, there is no way you could have foreseen this happening" which to me is the sign of a bad ending. No-one can tell me they predicted Korra spirit bending herself into a Kaiju haha
      Second point... I have to disagree especially after the 'let it go, you won' theme of season four with Korra.
      I got the impression that (and you are completely right in that it technically could happen with a future avatar) but with her accepting that Wan was wrong and Unalaq had a point about the world being out of balance... but then her turning around and destroying one half of the two ancient spirits as opposed to accepting he needs to exist just felt very much like she had one foot on the step but never TOOK the step. So I found it disappointing, but open to other peoples interpretations.

    Actually i think the idea of unalaq and vatuu going so big is the same concept as the spirts going inside people in Wan's episodes. We can see that "unavatu" looks more like Vatuu than a typical human. The only difference why Korra and previous avatars wasn't looking like this is because Ravaa didn't want to make them like this while Vatuu took over and he didn't care about Unalaq at all so he made him a giant monster, which makes perfect sense for me. I also think that the reason why he is so big is the idea that when Ravaa was going smaller he was going bigger, so while he destroyed her he could gain his maximum power and size. On the other hand I think it's better to be super powerful while staying in the typical human shape and that's why Ravaa never took over. For me it's just the concept of balance with the light spirit who doesn't want to deformate the human body and be on the equal rights in this combination.

      @@Pleoxz I totally agree with Kennys defense - as a person he's been great, it's mostly relationships he sucks at und the current disaster is really not your everyday honesty in a relationship trouble. While he did warm up to dating Asami again, she kinda pushed herself on him in a moment of vulnerability. And Korra, in the midst of a global crisis, lost her memory just assuming they were still together. Also their break up isn't far in the past and they didn't break up because they don't have feelings for each other anymore, but because they realized their relationship doesn't work with all the situations clashing all the time. Looking at how messy most real life relationships can get sometimes, I'd think that's a reasonable point to at least be tempted to rebound.
      SPOILER:
      Also we see them sorting it out at the end again, and in S3&S4 Mako taking a break from relationships in general to focus on himself (which is probably a good thing for him). She and Mako work even worse than him and Korra because she keeps ending up in the middle between the two without Mako fully committing 🤷‍♂️ My empathy goes out to Asami but overall the situation is very human, and I think it's just peoples tendency to want to have ONE to blame for the mess up. As time passed on she continued to get smaller and vatu continued to get bigger. As darkness grows and spread vatus size is the same and rava shrinks. Once he destroyed rava he grew to an enormous size as there is no more light and just pure darkness. It makes sense

    This episode has about 74 reasons why season 2 is the best season. The whole scene where Unalaq kills Raava and then grows because it gets bigger when the light gets smaller (and I guess they already saw the finale so this won't be a spoiler, but if you didn't then don't read any further)
    and at that point where Raava got killed, it instantly started re-growing inside Vaatu but as a microscopic light, so Vaatu could get that immense. That whole scene and the music and the twins seeing his father become the giant monster, and the music ugh it's sad how underappreciated season 2 is, right as TLOK altogether was underappreciated for all these years. And also season 1, season 1 is underrated too when it's probably the strongest season out of any show for how well everything ties together, and the Tarrlok and Noatak deaths. My hope is that just as TLOK finally got appreciation after many years, in some time season 2 will get the praise it deserves as the fucking best fucking season.

All season, Tenzin has been touting this special position he had as the last airbender after Aang, that he inherited the responsibility of restarting a whole culture and is a spiritual failure. His perception was that he should be like Aang. In the interaction, Aang tells him that he should not be him. Tenzin basically reaches a state of enlightenment and that’s how he’s able to see through and exit the fog.
    It’s really beautiful to me.

    In the Last Airbender comics, we saw when aang was in the process of forming republic city - that avatar roku was extremely against building a place where all nations could bond + form a melting pot. This showed me that connections to past avatars, at least for Korra being a post-modern avatar, was very limited on how much insight past avatars could provide her. Even though the writers did this because they thought this would be the last season - I know a lot of people disagree but i think it was important for korra’s story and for the franchise in general.

    I feel like that moment with tenzin was a message for tenzin but also the fans who are hyper focused on the past thinking legend of korra is ONLY an extension of avatar . A lot of people looked at tenzin as aang 2.0 and that korra should be exatly like aang hyper focusing on her not being SPIRITUAL enough when it’s like she’s not the first avatar to not be the most spiritual like yes that’s important but she’s not an air nomad that way of living is gone forver . This is legend of korra these characters are a new generation and they have to find their own path which is also why I love that they kinda got rid of Korras connection to the past avatars because it’s a message of letting go of the past . For korra and for the fans

    I think the reason Una-Vaatu got huge and spooky was because at that point Raava was dead and Vaatu became the predominant spiritual force in the world. Remember that when Wan travelled with Raava, she did get gradually smaller as Vaatu grew stronger.

    About the comparison between Eska and Desna vs Mako and Bolin:
    To add to Kenny's take on this, I would also think that one thing that helps give Eska and Desna a potential edge over Mako and Bolin is that not only do they have potentially increased coordination from both wielding the same element, but that their doubled-up element happens to be water. Water is probably the best element for having coordinated attacks anyway because of its flowy nature, so the fact that their shared element happens to be water, Eska and Desna could have even more of that sibling synergy with the coordination of their bending.

    I think the reason vatu/unalaq were able to become a giant, titan-esque avatar probably boils down to the complete defeat of Rava. Without the balance of the opposite spirit, Vatu’s power is completely unfettered. (Same as how he was growing throughout Wan’s episode)

    so I think the reason unalaq/vaatu were able to grow so large is because darkness grows when light fades, and raava was destroyed. the spiritual energy is also elevated during harmonic convergence, so I think it was a bit of both

    *What I Like About the Zhao Cameo in Legend of Korra* -
    One thing I personally like about the Zhao callback in the Fog of Lost Souls is how it weaves further continuity of the Avatar lore by creating another connection between The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. Specifically, it ties together Aang's pacifist nature with an act of poetic justice at the hand of the Ocean Spirit.
    In The Last Airbender, it seemed like Aang with the Ocean Spirit apparently drowned Zhao for harming the moon spirit fish. But by having Zhao instead be trapped in a part of the Spirit World, it is the life-sparing punishment that is a fate worse than death all over again, (like when Aang took Ozai's bending away at Sozin's Comet). Aang preserves his pacifist principle by not actually having killed Zhao while fighting to protect the Northern Water Tribe, Water Tribe culture, and the moon spirits. As for the Ocean Spirit, Zhao is spared, but lives out a continuous existence of being tormented by unresolved and impossible-to-ever-fulfill, 'dog-eternally-chasing-its-own-tail' ambitions of capturing Avatar Aang. This parallels to Aang sparing Ozai's life, but taking his bending away to make him live a spared life of powerlessness which is torture to a power-hungry bully, control-freak, and conquest-driven warmonger.
    Additionally, looking backwards chronologically, it's like a sort of "reverse foreshadow" to how Aang would apply a similar tactic to stop a bad guy who is doing great harm, and seeking to do even greater harm if he succeeds, but without having to actually kill him to foil the villain and his plan.
    - - -
    (Anyway, so why does Legend of Korra suck so bad again haters?)

    One thing I'd like to add to the discussion whether Mako and Bolin or Esna and Desna are a better team: They always faced off in places with an abundance of water so far. So either in snowy/icy regions or on the ocean. I think if they were to fight outside of such a region, Mako and Bolin would have the clear advanatge since they wouldn't be dependant on sources of the element as much since earth is often all around them (unless they were to be on an airship, for example) and fire doesn't need a source (There is also another thing later that definitely makes them stronger, but I won't specify in any way what it is or how it affects their abilities).
    And a thing towards the "Becoming a giant being thing": Maybe Unalaq was able to do that because Vaatu took over and therefore transformed their body, something Raava would only do in the most dire circumstances. The respective Avatars and Raava always worked together, that's why they didn't turn into this form while Vaatu doesn't care about Unalaq.
    It might also be that Raava doesn't do it because it might damage the human, we know that holding multiple elements harms the human and that if spirits possess humans they also get harmed, so Raava who holds 3 elements possessing someone and also changing their body, might destroy the human or make them unable to turn back (Like maybe that is their way of deforming the human hosts like with the tree-guy).

    Bolin is carefree and kind because Mako took on the role of a parent to raise Bolin. I think the hate he gets is a bit unfair considering this is probably the first time where he had someone care about him.

    Another exciting episode of S2 this is! The directions this one took was pretty wild, from Korra’s face-off against the merged Unalaq/Vaatu to Tenzin’s shining moment. Even the callback with Zhao surprised me and cleared up what had become of him in the OG Avatar series. Awesome episode and reaction overall!
    P.S: Loved Appa’s small screen time in this video. And that yawn...too cute!

    The only reason that the avatar has all the elements is because wan went and got the elements from the lion turtles. So the power was wan's and not Raava's. So the dark avatar wouldn't be the same because he doesn't have all the elements

    • @TheCheese1988
      @TheCheese1988 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rava did keep a hold of the elements for Wan though, so he could only use one at a time. It was only after convergence where they got fused that he could use all four at once, I think I remember.

    • @TheSaxAppeal
      @TheSaxAppeal 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheCheese1988 no, he could still use them all separately before they fused. The fusion just gave him the power to use all 4 at once

    I think Vaatu and Unalaq were able to grow so big because Raava was destroyed, so there was no more balance between light and dark, so Vaatu was able to reach the height of his power (,like the concept of "darkness grows as light fades"). Maybe Raava could do the same thing if Vaatu would be destroyed.

    Personally, I think the heroes made a bad call splitting up like that to fight the baddies and find Jinora at the same time. Things would have gone so much smoother if they’d teamed up, bodied Unalaq and Vaatu, and then gone in search of Jinora once the spirit world was safe to do so in.

    if you go back to atla when they introduce the avatar statues in the southern temple, you will notice that there is only one empty spot left which is aang. The writers might made for the avatar cycle to end with aang and for Korra to start a new cycle. it sucks that because of this, people hate on Korra. I do wish they would done a better way for the viewers to say goodbye to the past avatars and not just traumatize us with each of our favorite avatar disappearing.
