Thank you Dangerous Spore. This symphony is worth hearing once because it is a fine piece of music written by a talented composer who has fallen into obscurity. The reason that is so is because the symphony does a lot of cool stuff but never says anything worth remembering, a problem faced by many good composers who never rise to the level of true greatness.
Sorry for this late answer and for my bad english. I just read your comment. Wow, I disagree profoundly with every aspect of your appreciation. The problem is that you express your own esthetic experience, and your esthetic experience is not true or universal in itself: "never says anything.... for you; "a problem... for you'; "who never rise... for you. Last but not least, "level of true greatness": for Christ, what are u talking about, dude? I don't see any argument anywhere. Nevermind, it was a pleasure, Ja Blindsky.
I think it's the wrong one; the CD is by Osmo Vänskä and Lahti Orchestra. This LP is with Finnish RSO and Okko Kamu. - Unless there is some CD version that I am not aware of ..... ?
The 4th Symphony is Kokkonen's finest work as far as I'm concerned - a concise, monolithic, memorable and moving masterpiece
A recent discovery. I'm very fond of Scandinavian/Baltic symphonists but this composer is really new to me. Awesome composition.
