* Kalalau Trail (with drone) Top 10 most dangerous hikes? KAUAI (wrj56)

  • (c) William Jans (please subscribe so I can create more!) Join Vancouver photographer / adventurer William Jans' wee jaunt on the amazing Kalalau Trail on the Na Pali Coast in Kauai.
    * Note that you should not lean into the mountain. Just stay vertical and move with caution. Also lens distortion on the looking down video footage makes it look more sheer and steep than it is. The straight on shot shows the real angle. Not as steep, but caution still required.
    The start date of Dec 8 was vexed with both a Flash Flood warning & Tsunami warning. Both must have abated since hikers were allowed to continue. Hiking in winter means MUDDY! But this is still a great adventure.
    If you choose to do this, please be respectful of these lands deemed sacred by the Hawaiian and of course be prepared (!) and heed warnings and pay for permits too of course! (*note this is (c) William Jans. Do not copy or repost any portion without my permission).
    Filmed, edited and created by William Jans with 1 drone, 4 video cameras and 1 pro DSLR camera for stills. All gear and no clothes = 1 stinky William.
    Credits at the end to thank the great new friends I met along the way. Some of these amazing folks were kind enough to participate and some were super kind in loaning me battery chargers when some of my many batteries went kaput. Hope you get to do this 37km trip too!.
    This looks kind of "Wow" on big screen if you have :-)
    Notes / Disclaimers:
    - This is not all that dangerous if you are careful. Some run (portions) of this trail out and back (I would like to do that too).
    - Hawaiians I encountered described the many "yahoos" going at this carelessly with no respect for the dangers, so requested I show the risks to mitigate everyone thinking this is merely "a walk in the park."
    - Flash floods and ocean surf have reputedly taken more lives than falls, so be wary in crossing or considering playing in the water.
    Thanks for watching and I hope you might check out my other videos or full shows too! They have been live shows in Canada only this far, but I am creating *Streaming versions for 2017! If 80,000 Canadians enjoyed them, I hope other citizens of of other countries might like them too.If you subscribe here, I will add clips to announce dates when set.

      Hi Nick, Actually I make a point of speaking with every person there to ensure they do not mind, and the flights are very short - like 7 minutes. I know most don't chat with everyone there, but I do and it is important to me. If someone felt it could bother them I would wait. The Crawlers ledge part was only heard by one person (the person in it) and the end point was 5 people as I recall all of whom were ok with it. I hope others will be polite and respectful to not marr the experience for others too. As a pro at this that is super important to me. Foolish or rude flyers can ruin it for everyone. It can happen everywhere and one bozo can ruin it big time. Even as a fully licensed pilot here in Vancouver, where I am permitted by air traffic control, and fully allowed in the airspace, I still chat with all those impacted. :-) . Cheers and thanks - Thanks for your comment too, and I hope you find others will be responsible too. :-)

      @@williamjans This is great to hear, I didn't give you near enough credit. And seeing that you can relate to having a drone ruin an experience gives me confidence that you are making all the right decisions. I've never had a flyer ask if it would bother me (although, to be honest, I think I would politely say it's fine even though I would much rather not have the noise pollution). I remember a drone forcing me to leave a beach in Aptos and Hanalei, and an instagramer who interrupted a cultural ceremony at Nu'uanu Pali lookout to climb the wall and take selfie after selfie. One little shove and I could have made this world a better place. I appreciate you writing back, and clearly you are at the opposite end of the spectrum from these self absorbed narcissists. Keep doing what you're doing!

      @williamjans  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@flentie Thanks amigo! I appreciate your kind words :-). I know it can be so annoying when people forget or ignore civilities. I would be put off too if my first encounter with a flying buzzing thing was by having that flying buzzing thing near me! ha ha. BTW I was flying over Burrard Street in Vancouver yesterday off of a 30 storey building! Fully permitted by Nav Can and Air traffic control, but so intense between buildings and in such a busy area. I will probably post some of that video here in a while. if you might feel like subscribing you will get alerted when that comes up. Thanks kindly if so. This hike would be my definition of Hell on Earth. I couldn't make it, I would sit near the start and attempt to signal helicopters or die trying. If I did make it down, I would hunt down and kill every person responsible for my being up there.
    My knees were buckling sitting at my desk just watching. You think I'm afraid of heights? I went through something like that before in Hawaii when I was 16. One of the worst days of my life and I'm 55 now. I'll stay clear of muddy, slippery 20" wide paths on 175 ft. sheer cliffs, thank you. A man's got to know his limitations.

    • @williamjans
      @williamjans  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh my! Well I am glad you got to watch this then rather than do this! I thought it was good fun, but you are certainly right that a fear of heights could make this challenging. Warning though it starts (sadly) with me breaking my ribs. otherwise good fun. Cheers and thanks kindly for subscribing if you did... Perhaps try and do the 2 mile hike to Hanakapiai Beach. That will give you lots of beauty and is very straightforward, especially if you skip the stream crossing. And you do not need a permit to hike there.

  • @AlyseParker
    @AlyseParker 7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    WOW This is insane. I'm about to hike this in 3 weeks and I'm equally terrified of the trail as I am stoked to experience the beauty.

    • @williamjans
      @williamjans  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You will have a great time! It is not really that dangerous. Just be careful and heed warnings and you will be pretty darn safe I am sure. As a note too, in the video - when you see the looking down at my feet perspective - distortion of the lens makes it seem much steeper than it is. Other images in the video show the real pitch accurately but those couple can be deceiving. You still must be really careful there since a fall would likely be fatal (steep enough to slide all the way down) but again, be cautious and you'll have a great time.

    Absolutely love this hike! We do it everytime we go to Kaui. We always go in and out in one day. If the ocean is calm and the sand isnt super washed out, we swim to Honopu beach. I've only done it twice because there are usually pretty scary long-shore currents that will make it impossible to get back if there is any sizable swell. Waves and currents on the Napali are no joke. We only do this in July or August so usually the trail is pretty dry and ocean isn't absolutely insane. The Kalalau trail and beach is literally my favorite place on earth. However, the squaters at Kalalau beach really piss me off. Im glad they are ticketing more. It is always fascinating how you start super lush and wet and it gets drier and vegetation changes the more westward you get.

    Did in/out in a day. My luck, it was a wind-less clear day and scortching, so was a brutal hike coming back. A kid passed me running the trail in/out - said he did it weekly. Met way too many people carrying ridiculously big packs and heavy hiking boots - don't make that mistake.
    Some cute, friendly, but very hungry kittens at the midway gate. Bring some cat food!
    Took 4 hours in to Kalalau, leaving at first light. 1 hr at the beach. 7 hrs back as it got so hot. At least it wasn't muddy...
    If you want to camp, need a permit. Spots fill up many months in advance, so get one early, especially during peak season.

    My fiance and I are visiting Kauia soon and I am starting to research what we want to do. I came across a few Pinterest posts showing off this beautiful trail and couldn't wait to hike it! Shortly after finding out about the trail I came across some information that it is closed for a few months and I was really bummed we were going to miss out on such an amazing hike. Your video was so helpful in making me feel so much better about not being able to hike it because in reality, we are not mentally/physically prepared for this type of hike. I was going to do this hike with my new husband in 1991. We were married on Kauai so I dragged my big wedding dress for that day and we brought all of our hiking gear. We were hiking novices but I heard the Kalalau trail was beautiful so we were ready for it.
    Honestly, thank goodness, monsoon rains came and we decided to bag the hike and fly to Kailua Kona on the Big Island.
    We most likely packed too heavily and those narrow muddy trails would be out of our difficulty range.

    I lived in Hanakopiai back in the 70s , built a bamboo house in the valley just before Hanakopiai. Could see the ocean from my bed . I could run most of the 2 miles in or out of Hanakopiai. Hiked into kalalau on a full moon once ? Hiked there many times . Would always hike out at red sky , when it was light enough to see the way up red hill an would be out in less than 4 hours . I build and fly drones now and think about filming the Na Pali . Awesome thanks for the flood of memories.

      I just finished my first gps build . 7” quad . Matek F7 , Matek gps module, crossfire , runcam eagle plus a GoPro session . I’m only getting 9 minute flights just cruising but want to build a li ion 2p 4s , maybe get up to 15 minutes . Man when I think back , some of the end trail just before kalalau are scary . As you leave Hanakopiai you get to the huge rock on the right that you could walk behind and sit on the edge and look straight down into a tiny bay . That bay has a trail the Hawaiians made from Hanakopiai beach along the cliff just big enough for your bare feet . You wouldn’t know it’s there unless you walked it . Imagine it’s 1976 you just got out of the navy and your hitchhiking Kauai and this guy picks you up says there’s a nude beach 2 miles from the end of the road . I’m on that trail first time June of 76 . I get to the part where you can see Hanakopiai beach . Yep all naked with full body tans . I found paradise. Memories 30 years on Kauai .

Swamp was crater back in the day and one of the highest points, mosquitoes don't go up there so you're able to see unique birds & prehistoric plants endemic to the area, a time capsule with a trail going through! I have walked in and out, 3 times and hang glided off the Kalalau Lookout once. Story published in September 1978 HANG GLIDING Magazine colour centrefild. It's sad to see, so many signs along the Kalalau Beach. While in the Kalalau, for 17 days and nights, I met "Michael of the Wind" and he was headed to Jonestown, that summer. I do not know if he ever made it there. I HOPE NOT!! If you see a copy of the September 1978 HANG GLIDING magazine, that's Michael, standing at the base of the double rainbow.

    I was going to cuss you for disturbing the natural peace with a drone flight, but then you reminded me about those damned helicopter tours. That's why I was fortunate to hike Kalalau when they had been grounded because of too many safety violations so it was pure heaven.
    Don't downplay the dangers. I was returning to Ke'e after camping for a few days and found a scared, whimpering woman around MM4 who had no idea how rough it would be and honestly thought it would be a walk in the park. I gave her my last Clif bar and some drinks of water since I was almost back anyway. I hope she made it out safely.
    Proper preparation prevents poor performance.

    • @williamjans
      @williamjans  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you were able to help that lady out. And lucky you were able to see the area with that the helicopters. I didn't mind them so much it just is what it is. As it turns of my drone is actually quite small and quiet and with the crawlers ledge there, it was only myself and the guy who is in the footage there to see or hear it. However it was windy enough he couldn't hear anything almost.
      Happy travels to you and thanks

    • @williamjans
      @williamjans  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I try to be incredibly respectful with my drone. I spoke with everyone there to ensure they were ok with it. I don't fly long, and don't buzz anyone or anything like that :-). There are a couple other drone vids on my channel you might like perhaps and those are also done with discretion and politeness... I think as a Canadian I am legally bound to be over polite and apologetic. ha ha , Cheers Fallo

      @williamjans  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rebeccacharles9380 HI, thanks for the note, This video was made quite a few years ago and I dont recall there being restrictions then. The concept of drones were pretty much in their infancy at that point. I have not had the good fortune of being back on that lovely trail, but it does indeed sound like it is not appropriate now. Interestingly I just spent an hour 1/2 yesterday with the head of air traffic control in Vancouver and he showed me stats showing the amount of drones in the last week exceeding 400 feet, and one at 1623 feet. Interestingly most of them as I saw in the official police data are the mini ones. Still just as dangerous if it hits a plane window at speed. Thanks for the kind note, and enjoy your travels too. Yes it is only one way in and the same way out, but it is not too hard to let people by. The one contentious area there is such that you can see if someone else would be crossing and most would likely wait to let them pass. Much safer. I like being alive and will refrain from this hike and Angels Landing and a number of other hikes that I have viewed online and decided I do not need to attempt until it is time to die. Lol. Not today! I am from the flat coastal plain of southern Georgia and am uncomfortable with death defying cliff faces and narrow paths and creeks and rocks far far below with no guard rails to attach myself to with a steel cable or vast netting to fall into when I inevitably do just that! Lol.

      @williamjans  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      HI there from Vancouver. I first read your note quickly and thought you said you WOULD prefer to do Angels Landing instead of this... which really piqued my interest since I want to do that too! I am from BC instead of flat coastal Georgia, so we have lots of bumps and humps despite being so close to the ocean. I think we all get used to steeper stuff out here I guess. Ha. Keep yourself safe and enjoy whatever adventures you get into! IF you might like, I posted the Sunshine Coast Trail Hike in 7 installments that you might find fun, and shows you what BC is really like in the bush! woo hoo! Cheers William Jans

    I'm thinking crampons would work well in this situation

    • @williamjans
      @williamjans  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wonder! If you try please let me know. I think that there is rock under the surface of much of it might make it a bit less stable, unless you mean those little crampon bump ones for walking on ice? maybe those help? I wonder! Do let me know. Greetings from India right now! I will have some wild stuff to post in a bit from this crazy adventure too! Best regards, William Jans

    In all fairness, the sign you show at the end noting 83 deaths refers to Hanakapiai Beach, not to the Trail. Kalalau is tough for sure but there's no purpose served by misleading people about the number of deaths there.

    I've done some Colorado mountain hiking. I don't mind a bit of exposure but that trail is ridiculous, especially in the mud. How stupid would it be to slip and fall to your death.

    • @williamjans
      @williamjans  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed. I should clarify that the angle you see looking downwards does make it look more daunting. you can see on the shots from the end of the trail that it is no "so outrageous" but indeed is a place to be cautious. I have been surefooted all my life, but clearly had that millisecond of misstep that got my heart rate up.
      Cheers and happy hiking in Colorado. You might find the Sunshine Coast trail in BC (120 km north of Vancouver) to be a good adventure. I have videos on that if you might like to have a gander. Oddly you will really see a bit of bad luck re misstep there... (I swear my proprioception is normal pretty darn good!)

    Great video! I consider myself pretty adventurous, but that hike is way outta my league. Anything you recommend for the south side of Kauai that is along the lines of a 3 or 4 mile hike that isn’t so life threatening? 😀

    BTW. what was your time of travel for the 11 Mile hike. just wondering because I have permit for an August trek. I am 47 yo and some what fit. I regularly mountain bike 10.5 m in 3.5 hours. been training harder to get better.

    • @williamjans
      @williamjans  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mike, you should be fine. You could do the whole thing out in a day if desired, but I opted to do 2 days to get out and 2 days to get back to make it more leisurely and since I had quite a bit of weight. The midpoint is not as amazing for camping but was just fine and I really enjoyed myself doing ti that way. best of lukc. I fly to Morocco tomorrow so am sorting things away quickly. cheers

      Hi Keegan from William in Varkala India today. I hope you do get the chance, if you feel comfy with it, and it really is not as bad as it seems the one shot with the wide angle compresses it so much it looks steeper than it is, right after the same shot deeper in the film you see the pitch from the side. You still REALLY have to be careful, but it might not be as bad as you think. Thanks for subscribing too as I am going to have some really crazy stuff from India to come! Hope you like the BALANCE IN HOPE Video too. If you think the Kalalau one seemed sphincter clenching, wait till you see that one! Looking forward to hearing what you think. cheers William

    Can you atleast do the 1st part of it with kids 10 years old and up or is it dangerous from the beginning near Ke'e beach?

      @williamjans  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      HI Mario from Vancouver. Just back home from Norway and Iceland 48 hours ago :-) I think you would be fine with the kids personally, but if they are not sure footed the mud could cause for some clumsiness In my opinion. perhaps bigger than That is that they will have to want to do it. if they protest a lot may make it less fun perhaps. Best of luck and enjoy the vistas. William

    Having done this hike I recommend taking a big long bamboo walking stick, 8 feet at least, to help brace yourself on the narrow and steep parts. It's a beautiful part of the world, but the constant tour helicopters ruin the peace.

      Hi Andrew! Thanks for the note and you may wish to consider it if you have the energy to walk that far. it is a long hike to be sure, but if it is deemed a safe time by authorities it is not all that bad. Be cautious and thorough of course. If you are near West Coast Canada, I can highly recommend the Sunshine Coast Trail! I have videos you can check out if you wish on my site here too!
