This man is like a Jiu Jitsu pastor. The way this dude can just break down the science of the sport is insane honestly. Every position to this man is like a working wheel that can fall into place for his world of chaos
I remember when I was being held down in a judo match in the open weight division and being resolute that I had lost, and all of a sudden I heard my coach scream “move!” I was immediately embarrassed and bridged with all my mite and pulled my arm out to escape. As I stood I gasped for breath in intense pain from the exertion. My much larger opponent ominously approaches me, and I grasped his outstretched arm to complete a tomoe nage for a full point winning throw. After this moment in my life, I always knew that I could push with everything I had in a bad situation. I had done it before with success, and I knew that it was only pain that held me back and that it would stop.
I literally clicked on this video under the assumption of exactly what Danaher says @ 1:10 as it pertains to my own progress. Gotta say, good feeling knowing you're thinking in the right direction seeing it backed up by the world's best.
My name is John Danaher.. Pay strict attention to what I say because I choose my words carefully and I never repeat myself. I've told you my name: that's the Who. The Where could most readily be described as a prison cell. But there's a vast difference between being stuck in a tiny cell and being in prison. The What is easy: recently I planned and set in motion events to execute the perfect bank robbery. That's also the When. As for the Why: beyond the obvious financial motivation, it's exceedingly simple... because I can. Which leaves us only with the How; and therein, as the Bard would tell us, lies the rub.
Exactly... look how many extremely rich people have been broke numerous times. They still had it to take the risk on the next big idea because they knew if they lost it all they could dig themselves back out.
Personally I'd love to just practice escapes for like a year, especially under the teaching of a john donnaher type, but I am a mixed martial artist through and through and see literally no downside to have super strong escapes
No disrespect to jujitsu and their matches it can’t be compared to a boxing match or a mma match or a street fight there is a lot less fear involved in a jujitsu match because you know the worse can happen is you getting pinned and submitted but in a real fight you make a mistake it’s a vicious knockout that’s possibly life threatening that element changed everything in the sense of confidence In jujitsu period
Right, in real life it's better if you never put yourself in a bad position. You can learn this the hard way. Maybe it's not the end of the world and that's good to learn, but sometimes it is.
It applies to all fighting. It's pretty much an emphasis on defense. You have good defense, then your offense will shine. Boxing and MMA are just as forgiving as BJJ, because one mistake here can cost you everything. But this even proves his point of emphasizing on defense even more
Every time i listen to john danaher speak I feel like we're planning a bank heist
🤣💯
And you know he will never get caught!
Great comment.
Haha for real
Can never unhear this now

This is some next level Sun Tzu shit
Great approach on Murphy’s law, everything can go wrong will go wrong and escaping those “wrong” situations is huge. Genius

I love this story, and it’s really true though, our mind is our main limitation in most scenarios
This is one of the most fascinating interviews on the interwebs.

First? Love your courage to ask "silly" questions of some of the most brilliant minds in the world, much respect 👌
What was the silly question?

this isn't about just Jitz, this is about life
It's about being gay

Appreciate the perspective
Similar thought process to judo: learn to breakfall so you're confident to try going for your own throws - remove the fear of failure.

John Danaher~Yoda
Gordon Ryan ~Luke
I remember starting out, getting top position and not having a clue what to do with it haha
am i the only one that plays John Danaher talking about jujitsu to enter a meditative state?
"almost all of them are strong in escape skills"... should have asked him which students he thinks don't have good escape skills
He basically is saying why Jon jones is so great why gsp took that headkick and Conor won the two belts
Lex is the man
Makes perfect sense - defense first ❤
This is how I conquered my fear of homsexual relations from a bottom position
Profound knowledge both on the mat and in life 🙏🏻🥋
Is Lex Fridman secretly DJ K-Billy
Love it
2 people lack confidence

No you can’t compare them your correct jiu jitsu is like chess and boxing is 2 men throwing punches

Boxing is less threatening than bjj because theres no such thing as a lucky submission
@@ongobongo8333 right, how many times you seen. Street fight end in a submission? Exactly

But this even proves his point of emphasizing on defense even more

I put a like for Danaher not for Lex.
