I agree with your Idea but nope, not wearing barrel pants. I’m in too good of shape at 64 to wear “billowy”. Not wearing skinny jeans either though. Body skimming is much more flattering. IMO.

I look in my closets to see what I have and can put together. Usually works, my style is classic. Do check your own closet to see what you can put together. J. Crew pre owned is an idea if you do not have what you want. Sometimes they carry my small petite size, and is a good resource for good clothing for people on a fixed income.

The blazer is gorgeous but oh dear NOT the barrel pants. Too much fabric adds weight on the legs and not flattering at all. Why would you wear them in the name of modern. In my view leave them to the teens!

  • @sherrynorte9574
    @sherrynorte9574 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +24

Thanks for the tips. No barrel pants for me. May be modern? but not very classic. I think they make everyone look like a barrel. There are other modern pants out there, like cargo etc that are more flattering, so this is what I am going to wear. I think that if someone wears a certain style it is rude to make comments to their face. We should be more kind to people.

Will be looking at the jeans silhouettes. However, to me nothing says “trying too hard” no matter the age than that tucking one quadrant of a blouse into pants look. Thankfully, I see it mostly on TH-cam and not on the street so looks like average women aren’t embracing it.

I totally agree that ladies of a certain age should keep up-to-date with trends and incorporate some of them into their styles. But I cannot get past the price point of the clothing shown in today’s video. Exactly how many women can afford to pay those prices? Barrel jeans are not graceful, and therefore, not attractive. They create a silhouette reminiscent of the cowboy who walks with legs wide apart in the shape of the horse. Or of bulging knees. Wide legs or flares are also modern (again) and much more of a natural way for fabric to flow.

I was a teen in the 60s and remember the grace of Jackie Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn and Marlo Thomas in That Girl. Years later I gravitated to the style of Julia Sugarbaker on Designing Women. Now in my 70s I still care about fashion but I find myself drawn to those two decades, I simply update them with a more current twist. One thing I just can't resist is a beautiful silk flower corsage on the lapel of a well tailored jacket. :)

Wider legs come and go, but if it’s “your personal style” … you “own it” and wear them anyway … maybe in a new way! I hate skinny/slim leg jeans/pants! I don’t wear them … I have thick legs and they just don’t look good on me or fit well! I also wear a Prosthetic Leg and Prosthetic Walking Boot! I need wider leg styles to fit over them! I was a teenager in the 70’s and still love the 70’s styles!
My daily uniform is a Maxi Dress … so easy and comfortable! I have all style boho caftans and caftan dresses, basic tank dresses, dressier styles! I LOVE Maxi Dresses! Got my first one in 1970 when I was 13!
If I wear pants I like wide leg styles! The tabacco barrel pants were cute. I’d pair them with a boho print tunic or cream peasant top! Or an unstructured jacket of some sort!
I like classics and wore them in my career …usually with my own twist on them! But in my current life, I don’t favor them and find them too boring! I’m a Boho Girl at heart! I always say I have a Hippie gene! 😍

I really enjoy your presentations, Kay. But maybe I am now simply too old, and too set in my design profession - I just cannot get my head around cropped wide pants! Baggy pants - ugh! I prefer I neat tailored straight-leg jeans or pants. I wear only dark colours like navy, black and dark grey, and the denims are always dark wash. This works for me in the creative field I still work in on a freelance basis...... But it is always a delight to find your posts on TH-cam, you are very refreshing!

Happy Saturday, Kay. I really like the barrel pants on you. I am 67 and I purchased a pair of white barrel jeans (mine are an ankle length) from the GAP two years ago and they are flattering on my petite figure. It is nice that you are presenting a variety of brands from "accessible prices" to more budget friendly options. I always like to look at the more expensive brands like Ralph Lauren and I try to find similar items from Talbot's or other more reasonably priced retailers who often have amazing sales. However, I do try to stick with sustainable fabrics such as cotton, linen, and wool with maybe the slightest amount of polyester or rayon. Thanks for your styling inspiration. You be you!

I don’t understand all the comments about the affordability factor. Quality clothing will cost more than Walmart, Old Navy, Loft, etc. I love those stores too but clothing from those stores offers “looks for less,” not quality. As Kay often says, wear (and buy) what you want. We don’t have to be critical about her videos. Get creative and take away nuggets from her videos. Not everything in these videos will apply to everyone. Just thank her for the great video and move on.

Kindness is always in style, but Kay does invite comments and the affordability comments I've read here are honest and valid. In fairness, if affordability comments are not appreciated, then why are any comments appreciated? So many of us feel like she is a friend with whom we could have coffee, so this is a style conversation, which is a two-way dialogue, and style includes cost. At the end of the day, Kay is a business person and is sponsored, so commentary is to be expected. I don't come here to be simply the recipient of advertising but to learn from her viewers as much as from Kay herself.

I have been thrilled that cargo / painter style pants are “on trend” again. The way they are cut is more flattering to my body, even tho it is post-menopausal this time around. Thank you so much, Kay, for all your thoughts encouraging us to stop trying to look younger. I agree heartily. I see so many 'older' women today trying far too hard to look like young. Sadly most of them end up looking a little foolish.
Your blouse in the video from EM&ME is absolutely beautiful and so feminine!!! Even though the cost of that one item is probably close to the cost of my clothing budget for a whole year, that's okay. My biggest goal is to be feminine and modest and I'm very much at peace and content with where I am. I can still use that design to help me find something similar in my own budget.
I think it's important to remember that all of us are a different places financially. While I might be a mom of 10 married to a mailman, someone else might be an empty nester married to a triple figure executive. In either case, I hope we can all love and be respectful to each other.

This popped up on my TH-cam feed today, and while I agree, I have to say that I've never tried to look younger. Neither did my mother, who always looked beautiful, stylish, and vital, no matter what her age. I'm glad I was raised by a confident woman who never even suggested that it was important to look "young." I'm sorry that, per the reason for your post, too many women are still uncomfortable with being who they are and whatever age they are. If you're comfortable with who and what you are, you'll carry that with you no matter what you're wearing. Know your shape and your basic style and then vary it according to what's fresh to your eye. For me, I know better than to wear big trousers, which make me look like a cereal box with shoes. To each her own.

I also shop religiously at thrift stores, and I have even found Talbots items. But finding those likely has to more do with the fact that I actually live where Talbots was founded in New England and it is a popular store that fits our cultural vibe. However, your point is well taken-I love Kay's videos more than any other influencer because she first talks STYLE, and then provides examples that we can search out in our own price ranges using her guidelines. It works!

I appreciate your comments, but who are you trying to fool with the ME+EM website. Yes, they handle duty and taxes but the price point of every single item is out of reach for most of us - $125 for a bucket hat; $500 for a dress; $400 for a pair of sandals. Really?? Plus every single model was an anorexic 20-year old. I refuse to accept the anti-ageing mantra of big business and have chosen to age gracefully according to my fashion sense.

Tk you for showing yourself in a loose dress. Other channels are saying to ditch the loose clothes. I am 5 feet 9 inch. I love the looose dress for travel and shopping. Easy on easy off. Loose tunics with a thin belt are comfortable. Comfort makes you feel good and therefore energetic.

I think we should look feminine and confident.
I like modern if it is flattering on my body, but otherwise I look for what is feminine and flattering and fits well on my body even if it is a classic style.
I do sometimes have to buy more from youthful styles simply because of my size.
I am very slender and hard to fit.

Finally! I think the biggest mistake women make is trying to look younger. Most women think they have to look younger in order to attract a man. If a man is attracted to younger women, you are not going to be able to have a good relationship with him. You might be surprised, but there are actually some men that want a woman closer to their own age. If you look too young, the men that actually want a woman that they can relate to are going to bypass you because they think you are too immature for them. The trick is to look confident. Wear clothes that are flattering on you. Keep your hair healthy. Have good manners. Be polite to others.

I truly appreciate these ‘training’ videos. I recognize that I can’t necessary wear what you can wear, but it reminds me to try something different. If you don’t try, you don’t know. As a side note, the items from Me + Em are way out of the price range for most of us. Maybe consider including links to similar, but more affordable items.

I did a major clean out of my closet a month or so ago. I was ruthless with what I gave away, but now I'm left with the pieces that I will actually wear. I am having a lot of fun mixing and matching different outfits and playing with 'looks'. I'm rediscovering clothes I forgot I had. Some are old pieces that are now in style again!
We also have to remember our lifestyles when we dress. I'm retired now, but I also have a business on the side. It's in the field of personal care for seniors, so it's not appropriate to dress to the 9's when I'm working now. I do enjoy dressing up for church or for the occasional lunch out with a friend, but otherwise, I'm pretty low-key.
P.S. I'm not a big fan of the barrel pant look, but to each her own. 😊

The barrel pants are hilarious!! And sneakers, if not being worn for working out, look anything but cute and modern…stodgy, yes. There are cute shoes to choose instead. They can make you look like a clown if worn with baggy pants…not a modern look at all !

I am 74, slim and Petite. My style is classic with a modern twist. Since I am so tiny, I hunt for clothing in my small size. Since sling backs are in style again, I have bought some 1940s era mid heel size 4b shoes which fit me perfectly. I love Blazers and straight leg pants or a slight flare or taper which fit me. T shirt, scarf and ready to go. I also like small fine jewelry, just a small touch of scent and a bit of lipstick. For handbags I have vintage Luxury. Not trying to look younger, just well groomed, attractive while aging gracefully. My mother was my example. She lived into her 90s, still beautiful with lovely skin. Skin care has also served me well, so has sun protection. I have that same Blazer with the gold buttons. I adore pearls, always have. Thank you, enjoyed this, especially finding finding my clothing is stylish.

Me & Em what? $245 for one of your items $295 for the other. I just saw green vest and that jacket/blouse. Barrel pants are not for short people. This video is not for the short, chunky (sz14), retiree. So what else you got
Ladies know when you’re a petite pant, wearing cuffed pants make you look shorter and chunkier even if not chunky. Here I was excited after watching your first video on how not to look frumpy. Then this one is completely meant for working ladies or bigger wallets

European brands are typically ill fitting for my body type, and way over priced. I am no longer working and don't have the need for a "uniform". I stick with clothing that fits my body well and play with accessories. Straight leg slacks look horrible on me, but full leg or wide leg trousers fit and feel beautifully.

Modern is ok if it fits your body well and is flattering and feminine but, I choose lots of classic pieces as well.
I am very hard to fit because I’m extremely slender.
I sometimes do have to lean more towards more youthful looking wardrobe pieces because of fit and sometimes because of price.
Barrel pants and baggy shirts in public would not be for me but, some ladies could probably make themselves look like a million dollars in them.
