Schwinn Axum 29x2.60 Mountain Bike from Walmart | 1x8 with Cassette

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 7 ก.พ. 2025
- The Axum is the latest mountain bike from Schwinn newly available at Walmart. It features a 1x drivetrain with an 8-speed cassette, BIG 29er 29x2.60 knobby tires, better geometry than previously seen on a big box mountain bike, and a gloriously gold metallic finish.
Priced at $399 this gets closer to local bike shop pricing. Is the Axum equipped to stand out or at that price is it too little for too much? Check out the video, then comment below with your thoughts on this newest Schwinn bike.

They are finally coming around to what everyone else has been doing, I love schwinn is doing this as well they can start climbing that brand ladder again and be respected like they once were
they screwed all of us that had original Schwinn when they voided all of the warranties ... I'll never own another one
@@jayj8664 That's because they sold the name to another company, can't really fault them for not honoring a warranty on a product they didn't make any profit off of. To each their own tho. The new frames have a lifetime warranty for what it's worth
Magg-A-Tron when you buy a company you buy it’s liabilities.
@@MichaelRei99 not true sir, many companies are bought out by others and warranties are no longer excepted
Magg-A-Tron they may try to do that but a savvy consumer has recourse.
In my estimation Schwinn is leading the pack in-spite of their cost cutting measured components this definitely is still a bike that I would like to ride at my local trails and add to my growing collection, I look forward in buying at my local Walmart, Thanks to Kev for keep us all riding smart and sharp...
This is the one I'd want to see made into a project bike. It looks like a pretty nice bike that's totally upgrade ready.
That's what I was saying. If he doesnt I'll have to myself 😂
@@Cube_Smith I ride a non-big box hardtail, but could have a lot of fun building something on this frame.
@@abadatha at the moment I ride a giant talon so I know what you're saying 😂
@@Cube_Smith I'm on a Diamondback Sync'r, and I feel like I could turn this into something very similar with a little effort to coldset the rear and a new fork (probably another Rockshox Recon RL). I wonder if I could fit 29x2.8s on it and make it into a 29+ version of my 27.5+ bike.
@@abadatha that definitely would be cool to see! I have new pedals, raceface 50mm stem and bars (aeffect) and I definitely want a new fork. Maybe a 120-130mm manitou?
I bought this bike and man. What a ride. Last bite I bought was my mongoose blackcomb(15 years old).
Have to say this hardtail is much smoother ride than the full suspension I had. Chain is staying on good and breaks are fine! Loving this thing! Bike shop I took it to took a picture to show trek. Thanks for the honest review!
"As the addiction takes hold"
You know, I tried to get help for this type of addiction and the lady at the desk told me that they specialize in 'serious' addictions and that excercise is good for me. Clearly she knew they were not prepared enough to help me.
I just purchased my first bike ( 27.5+) since I became a father to get back out there and now with my teenage son, I believe if I can get him hooked on riding more I would purchase this one in a heartbeat to replace his old Walmart bike to open us up to more rewarding trails. I like the upgradeability on this one. Thanks again Kev
Excellent review. Oversized seatpost, dropper ready, cassette, tapered headtube and real close +wheels! Biggist bang for the buck! Just a few upgrades and this is ready for just about anything. Well done.
Thanks for your reviews, Kev. I went ahead and ordered one. It arrived yesterday and I put it together. I took some weight measurements for folks in case anyone is interested.
Front wheelset (rim, tire, disk brake): 6.7 lbs/3.05kg.
Saddle + post: 1.5lbs/.65 kg.
Handlebar with stem, brakes and shifter: 2.4lbs/1.1kg.
Fork with brake caliper: 4.3lbs/1.95kg.
Pedals: .8lbs/.35kg.
Hope this info helps!
Thanks for all you do Kev! Just ordered my son an Axum as he had out grown his Trek 3500 small. It arrives this week. Cannot wait to get it out on the local trials. God bless.
I was so excited when this video popped up as I wanted to ask you about the Axum! I really wanted the Schwinn Moab 2, but after finding out it was a $2000 bike I sadly let that dream go and searched for another, that's when this one started popping up. I think after seeing this video it's a sign that I need to have one in my life, thank you!
I think the best part that nobody talks about is that you can get this and ride on it. As you grow, the ability to upgrade is there. This is the first bike in this price range that has a tapered headtube, 1 by, and a cassette. Not even local bike shop bikes in this range come with any of those. Some brands you even need to go up 2 - 3 models to get that.
I think i just found my new bike. I don’t go crazy off road but was looking for a comfortable multi terrain cruiser and this fits my needs. The ability to go 1x10 down the road works for me. Ty Kevcentral and schwinn!
Schwinn is gonna kill it now! tapered headset, 69 to 68 degree angled fork, 1x drive train! worth the money, time and investment now more than ever! great stuff Kev! keep up the good work!
That "light crash" looked gnarly AF!!!
I'm amazed at what is finally happening with the quality/spec of big box bikes. These manufacturers have to be paying attention to your channel.
I purchased online today, can't wait and I have a few upgrades for it. My first bike in 20 years. I am a runner but need a new mode of cardio and adventure.
Looks really good for the price and I love that 1 by setup really getting modern there, but the best part is the tapered headset
I just bought this bike at a Walmart in Kansas for 99 dollars. I had the employee check the price three times, and that was before I even researched the bike I knew it was either an error or a fantastic markdown. Very pleased with this bike and thank you for your excellent review.
Nice!
After some persistent searching, I found and purchased this bike at a local Walmart in the neighboring town nearby and so far, I am loving this bike. With some minor tinkering to the rear derailleur, the Axum rides and shifts smoothly. I ordered a pair of new, smaller tires that are 29x2.3 compared to the stock 29X2.6 tires to have a nimbler ride, but all in all this bike definitely is a great starter for mountain biking. Definitely will be adding new upgrades as I continue riding this bike
i have a 30 year old Schwinn High Sierra that i absolutely love, I'm a big guy and this bike has been good to me, so i am glad to see that they are stepping up their game on these trail bikes
Cool! This, this was worth the wait. Looks fun right out of the gate. Ask me again about a project bike.
I just bought this bike on Facebook market place for 50 bucks never assembled with all the tags 😊
Very impressed! I kinda want one lol love the gold and the paint, it would look great with some gum wall tires. It should defenitly be your next project!!
I'm jealous of bikes like these. I'm going to be paying more than $499 to get something similar in my region. Fantastic review. Looking forward to the next video. Keep up the good work.
Another great review,I was gonna axe you a question about the shifter and derailleur but you answered them thanks Kev awesome as always.
Another entertaining review Kev.... So 'colloquially professional'....That voice of yours has a hypnotic 'Pied Piperesque' vibe to it.... It would lure me all the way into a Wallmart Store for sure! (except we don't have any in England) KevCentral remains one of my favourite 'goto' channels. Shakkers 🇬🇧
Schwinn is kicking butt. So cool to see these changes.
I know this is a year old, but a Walmart near me just got these in. Apparently, shipping containers full of bikes must have hit the docks, because my local Walmart just got 12 Bounty’s, and 4 Taft’s in. They don’t have the Axum yet, but after finally seeing this bike in person, and sitting on it, this bike looks great!!! I like the 2.60 tires, and think they might be good in 6” or less of snow. I know it won’t be as good as a 3.50” fat tire bike, but should be adequate. The same store had 10 Bounty’s, 3 Taft’s, a blue Hyper Explorer hardtail, and a red Hyper Explorer duel suspension. I was set on getting the Bounty, but I think I like the Axum better. It’s $100 more than the Bounty ($448 for the Axum, and $348 for the Bounty) The blue Hyper Explorer for $348 looked sweet to though!!! Who knows, maybe I’ll mod this one up with at least bars, grips, and pedals, and maybe a couple of other goodies, and get the Hyper, or the Bounty to. But I’d have mod them up to with the same parts to!!! 😂😂😂
I think your bike reviews are moving up in the world, a Jaguar car commercial just played before the video. TH-cam algorithm can't be wrong :D
😂
I swapped out my handlebars, brakes, and pedals yesterday. It rained on and off all day yesterday so I didn't get a chance to test ride it. I went for a extended test ride today around Lake Perris. Most of it was on the paved trail, but I did take the shortcuts thru the gravel, weeds, and the scattered mud puddles. I didn't have any issues with climbing and there was no walk of shame going up and over the steepest hill on the pathway. The only real time I had to walk was when I tried to pedal back up to the path thru some wet, loose, and deep sand as all I could do was a burnout and bury the rear tire. Was fun and I'm eyeing some trails thru the hills around here. I just have to remember to shift into the lower/lowest gears when I'm coasting down a path to the shoreline to try my luck at catching a bass as it's too hard to try and shift and pedal uphill at the same time.
Every video I watch, I want to buy another bike. Thanks for sharing this!
I always have associated schwinn with the awesome hardtails they made in the late 90s and early 2000s...the homegrown line. I know they have since been sold off and big boxed but this bike is an upgradable entry level bike....this helps high end bike makers as it gives people a fun way into biking. Previous big box bikes are functional at best on the street and most have issues rigjt out of the box. This leaves the bike hanging in the garage and takes riders off the bike and out of the hobby. This will definitely bring riders to their next bike purchase(upgrade). Which is good for everyone! This also begs the question of scheinn re-entering the performance bike market. Their owner Pacific bikes, also owns Cannondale and GT so they have the production lines to move schwinn back into the big boy game...sorry for the long post 😆
Seems to be better equipped than a GT Aggressor Pro, a bike that I wouldn’t pay more than $299 for which has a “regular” price of $599. I’d definitely take this one.
Chad Kimmel the drivetrain is the main reason
Wes V I get it, but with the Aggresser Pro, once again at regular price you’re paying Trek Marlin 5 price for Marlin 4 components.
Yea. I just wish this bike came out earlier😩
And to think I used to pick these up on occasion before being retired. Always nice to see things I've hauled being used.
Nice bike. Two opinions. Good deal. Have him ride the boundary. At 150 less $ he might like more. As always. Thank you Kev. Got my new boundarys for my son and I finally. Took a short ride blinking it so far. Seat is hard.
I have the love for mountain biking my truck broke I didn't have a lot of money I stopped at Walmart just to see and look I got the Schwinn axe and it is great for a Walmart bike unbelievable I don't care about a lot on bikes as long as I can go fast and get air I happy 😁
I personally think you're getting an amazing deal at that price.
I put some riser bars and stem on mine, and it is much easier on my old back.
I really love riding it. I rode for about 2 hours earlier today and can't wait to go out on it again.
This thing is a beast. So much fun!
Very cool, like a monster truck. Schwinn should have a 27.5 version with the same 2.6" tires. Too bad though it doesn't have that nifty clutch like the Boundary and Taff. Thanks for the review Kev.
Or even better 26
@RS1 yeah he does.
I would say 26". A my 28.5" inseam does not like 29" and most 27.5" bikes.
Many 29x2.6 bikes have been turned to take 27.5x3.0 tires. This could be one of them.
Got mine yesterday with the dropper post. Got a set of shimano hydraulic Mt200s coming, and just tossed on a new seat, Rockbros pedals, and my preferred style grips. Def a tall riding bike, I love it!
I’m glad I waited, I was so close to buying the Boundary but this exceeded my expectations for my very first decently specked mtb for the money. It’s also a beauty! Thanks Kev 🙏🏼
I’m really hoping these Axe components withstand the test of time since I’ve never heard of them prior to this review. Hopefully Kev gives an update on how they’re handling soon
Honestly it's not decently specked at all. It's already 2020. Get the one with hydraulic brakes Shimano MT200 and at least Shimano basic level Alivio. At least!
@@JedTaneo What is the best MTB in 2023? I am a SCHWINN World Sport, VOYAGEUR 11.8 guy. but trying to uggrage
I have a Giant ATX 27.5 and I must say that these new Schwinn offerings are really nice. I would not mind having the Axum and may have to include it as a future purchase...
Great video, sir :)
QR axles. Definitely a step up. I would enjoy this.
It's Monday, November 13th. Just got mine last night after work. Was so excited. I wrote it a little but after I got home. Tires need air but I'm looking very forward to writing on some of the trails near my home.
Besides it's being a bang for your buck, the bike just looks badass.
@Greg Moore If only we could get the spokes mounted to replicate the snowflake style wheels ! Ha
i think you are the main reason for how these bikes are improving and thanks for that
This is an amazing deal. The only thing I would do is fit some budget shimano hydraulics and better pedals. Then I would have a ~$500 Bike. Comparing that fictional bike to something like a specialized rockhopper, this has better geometry, dropper post compatibility, a tapered head tube, a 1x drivetrain, and hydraulic Brakes.
ROLLBACK ALERT! I just ordered one online and it's on the way. $228 plus tax right now, delivered. I will professionally assemble it. A steal at that price!! I am proud to add it to my stable.
Can you do a "Battle of the $400 bikes"? I've been looking at the 2020 Motobecane 529HT 29er for a while now. It is same price but has all name brand parts which are decent but its a 3x8 and not a 1x8 (which I consider a downside personally) and its frame doesn't look quite as good. The 529HT also has budget hydraulic brakes. I'm very interested to see you compare the two since I feel like the $400 bracket is a very important space for a good entry level bike.
I feel like you would say the Motobecane would be better out of the box but the Axum would be better for upgrading but you have more experience than I do.
Would love to see Kev review motobecane vs big box bikes. They both have pros and cons, axum has better geometry but some generic parts and only 1 size. motobecane has some better parts and is available in different sizes, but geometry is dated.
@@jpsnowrider I feel like the Axum is probably better for upgrading and the Motobecane is better out of the box. They seem to have the same front fork but again that 1x on the Axum is very appealing. The Axum no name derailleur and other parts are basically the only thing pushing me to the Motobecane.
Managed to snag one a week ago when the brief window opened online. Picking it up tomorrow. Thanks for all your info!
When you get into that 400 dollar rrange your 75 away from a entry level Giant mtb. My first bike was a roadmaster. It survived me first trip to the trails and after that I sas hooked. A green giant atx 2 cought my eye at my local bike shop. And at a price of 475 it was super affordable/ in my price range
I have a Giant distributor in my town. I also though about that bike but it has a freewheel and I have a long history of bending and snapping freewheel axles.
For a beginner, or anyone with less than stellar skills, the larger 2.6" tires are great! Great trip and tolerant of errors. The lower Pressure you can run really helps turning and climbing on roots and rocks and makes the ride more comfortable. The slight loss in rolling efficiency is easily made up for by the higher speed you can carry out of a corner.
The lower pressure larger tires are really helpful on a hard-tail.
5:20 kevcentral... the bicycle equivalent of a crack dealer..
"I knew he was hooked"
He come back a week later scratching his arm asking if you got any more trails...
That’s how it works 😈
Daniel j Corica NAH.... What Could possibly ever make you think that eh? 😁🤣😂🤣😁👍
That is one underrated comment!
Sorry, that 6061 frame on a Roscoe is less tha 200 bucks. I can go further than ANY Roscoe with 7005 66 degree hardtail mid bike for slightly over 500 bucks any day of the week WITH A BETTER WHEELSET. These are not copies either. This bike game is ridiculous if you dont know they sell everything direct to consumer IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR LOOKING AT. Alibaba is killing it world wide with the actual manufacturers selling BETTER bikes for cheaper. If you have to have a LBS name then forget it. I ride the equivalent of a 11k trail bike full carbon that cost 1,560 bucks brand new. Its the championship XC bike for the last 5 years. You guys and this anti China campaign lost that battle years ago. Alibaba will not sell too many downhill bikes and frames, but the ones they do sell are top notch. Stop pretending only Trek makes bikes and you get absurd deals. Oh, yes we can buy a Roscoe equivalent here in Switzerland for 400 bucks no problem.
@@thiosemicarbizidebenzoylal2921 Roscoe does not have a 66 degree head tube nor is in sale as a ftame setup. Its x-caliber frame with 120mm travel for so the frame has EXACT headtube angle as regular x-caliber period.
BTW I just found a guy that sells 2019 used frame. He wants €300, Used.
Pedals will be your first upgrade. And worth it. Frame weight is just under 5lbs, fork is 6+. That will be your next upgrade. Brakes after that, but hydraulics are less than a franklin.
I have also done a taller adjustable neck and two inch raised bar.
Fork may cost you a bit depending on style you choose, but also worth it.
Saddle, drop post and a derailer are next for me.
Very happy with a rideable out of the box platform that is upgradeable!
Can you please make a Video about the dnm dropperpost? Love your Vids
Got mine on the 4th and finished putting it together yesterday. My box took a beating and had a huge whole in the bottom corner, but nothing fell out. There were a couple of small scratches on the upper tube that I can live with. The shifter cable wasn't adjusted correctly along with the rear derailleur. It looks like they just slapped them on and called it a day. After watching some videos on how to adjust them I managed to get them in sync with some trial and error. I still have to deflate the tires and get the beads seated correctly and double check spokes, etc, but otherwise it looks like it's ready to take it's maiden voyage today. I have a Shimano Hydraulic Disc Brake Set waiting to be installed. I'm not going to be doing anything crazy on the bike anyways, but figured upgrading the brakes would have it's advantages. Still got to see if the handlebars and pedals are livable for now. I'm kind of leaning towards I'll need to replace the handlebars and possibly the stem for some more lift.
Congrats on the new bike. How tall are you? Just wondering if this would be too big for me (5'9)?
@@jrockthecasbah 6ft and the upper bar is pretty close to the jewels. If your all legs then it might work. Rough measurement on the upper bar in the jewel area is between 30-31" depending on the seat position.
Thanks, I’ll be going w something smaller. Have fun.
Reminds me of the nishiki Colorado. The Colorado had the edge in the drivetrain Dept with the NX 11 speed, but this Schwin has the edge in IR dropper cutout, 30.9 common seat tube size, and that taper headset. My Colorado was only 299 when I got it but this Axe is much better for upgrades. Very exciting.
I used to own a schwinn moab .3 and it was a great entry level mtb and nice to upgrade. I am very happy for schwinn to come up the ladder and push others to do the same.
That was a light crash!?
I was thinking the same thing 😂😂😂
In Alabama someone has to lose a limb before it’s upgraded.
@@KevCentral dang, Alabama must be pretty hardcore. Up here in the Adirondacks, we usually just break our limbs, rather than tear them off entirely.
Yeah that was a whole tree smash. Good to know it's durable and came out fine.
I think the Kev Central factor is really coming into its own ! I really think this budget minded entry level Walmart bike is something I would have considered if It was around when I started. Great job Kev!!
There evolving! Great video though, keep it up 👍
Macbird 12 They’re* haha. They definitely are evolving.
I swear I feel it in my bones all these awesome upgrades from Wal-Mart bikes are cuz of u. All the specs you've talked about are all the things are being upgraded. So thank you man!!!!
I wish walmart imported these bikes to UK stores, they are just such a great deal!
Yup they would give Halfords a run for their money😁
@@Cheddar702 ofcourse these bikes have their limitations, eventually the frame will fail , but I think until then, these bikes are still incredible value for money, especially if bought for a beginner and upgraded
Cheddar702 Really?. Where can you go and buy those cheap bikes because what I see are sellers selling these Walmart bikes at almost the same price of the store.
Also there are some videos of Walmart bikes going on trails doing pretty good and very bad.
I don’t ride Walmart bikes but know like 7 people that goes to trails with them.
It just depends on how hard and risky you ride.
In my experience most of the people represent Kevin’s opinion except when you go to the trails and see people riding $2,000 bikes and up like they have a Walmart bike.
I just purchased one tonight. Bikes are hard to get this year again! I hope it comes complete with no problems,I've been waiting since last year 2020 to get one. It's a very nice bike and just my size. 8 speeds is all I need in my area. It's just for exercising. Tired of walking, lol! But I can upgrade everything as time goes on. Peddles will go for sure. New seat I already have. Thank you for great review. I was hooked when I seen your review last year. Should have it by April 2nd. Thank you again!!
@Buster Brown make sure you grease bearing races on fork top and bottom. There's hardly any there. Good luck to you and Happy Easter!
@Buster Brown Did you get your bike? I doubt it. My stuff says out for delivery too,I didn't get nothing. Fedex don't deliver on Holidays. Tomorrow I'll get it.
@Buster Brown really wow,my driver just drops it off. You must have it set up to be there.? Or it depends where you live.
@Buster Brown wow I don't get anything before 11 am. I think they were pulling your leg, lol. Monday is Easter Monday and it's holiday for most people. You'll get it Tuesday. Don't worry. I'm just glad you were able to get one. Because it might be hard this year to get one to
@Buster Brown same here. You have to be quick for sure! People are buying them up and reselling them for profit. A guy told me I could sell mine for $600 and get it. I bought to ride and lose weight. I was lucky to get this one complete and not missing any bearings, lol. Hopefully you have same luck.
Another awesome choice ....but not for someone who is 5'7". This in a 17" frame 27.5 would be awesome for me!
@@ka3097 I got the Aluminum Comp because of the small drop in the top tube. The new AL Comp has a straight top tube but haven't seen one in the store yet to see if it fits. It's almost worth it to buy a cheaper bike store brand bike for the frame sizes.

The Axum is on sale right now for $228. Just ordered mine this morning.
The bike looks like a great foundation for budget upgrades like a Shimano shifter/derailleur, a better fork, and hydraulic brakes. I'd rather pay more for a model with these upgrades instead of a dropper post. I wonder how good of a dropper post they will spec it with.
Even the best dropper posts are hit and miss still so I would avoid a cheap one like the plague.

Just caught this video this morning. GLAD I did! Was gonna use this very rare day off from work to go search local walmarts for that updated boundry. I think I like this one better. Add on a Bolany air fork or DFS and some Rock bros. pedals and go rock this sucker!
Funny how a brand commonly associated with department stores can get a budget mtb done right, but a bike shop brand like trek has the crappiest mtb at the same price. I might want to pick this thing up and throw my trek in the trash. Or pawn it off to buy a new helmet.
I don't know which Trek you have, but I would say that the Marlin 5 is still the superior bike. Don't forget that Trek comes with a LBS relationship and somebody to fix things that are broken & beyond your scope. Along with that is different size frames. There is no way that this bike would fit my 11 year old son, but I can find a Trek Marlin that does - and it will have hydraulic brakes. Seriously, just because a big box bike is catching up fast, Trek and others are still leading the way.
Mike Cleveland i never said trek was bad. Just disappointed that they made a bike at the same $400 price (the 820) as the new schwinn that was utter garbage. They’re still leading the way (although their budget mountain bikes are pretty overpriced for what they are, you can find way better for cheaper from other brands and still have the same bike shop service).
Not really that surprising because most well known mtb brands are focusing on engineering and manufacturing their high-end bikes, and not lower-range bikes. By buying a budget bike from Trek, Gt, Scott etc. you get a good quality frame with decent warranty, but most of the times with outdated geometry and lower-grade parts. Schwinn focuses more on their budget line up, so when buying their bike you get probably a lower quality frame, but the geometry and parts are more thought out and up to date. Plus, sometimes brands ally with each other so one manufacturer could make only low-end bikes and the other mid to high-end bikes
fpsgenerator so would it be wiser to buy a budget bike from a well know brand?
I'd like to note here that the 2020 Trek Marlin 5 has a straight head tube (not tapered) and a 2x drive train.
I like seeing big box stores stepping their game up to challenge entry level bike shop bikes. It opens the door to people who are just getting into the sport without breaking the bank, but they get a bike that they can upgrade with better components if they want. Anything to get people out of their house and onto the trail is cool with me.👍
these are on clearance for $200 wow
interesting the talk about the new rider. Indeed I bet this is a great bike for a new rider, easy to ride with the big fat tires and the 1x keeps it simple.
If I didn't already have two nice hardtails, I'd be all over this!
This is a very interesting bike that really shakes up the budget lineup. When you compare this to other local bike shop bikes in its price range this still seems like the better decision. I think its arguably better than the Trek 820, GT Aggressor Pro, and Giant ATX. For people who don't have $1000 to spend on a bike, this will get them on the trails AND be able to grow with the rider. You can't get a tapered fork on any of those other bikes I listed. You don't get a one-by on any of those I listed, and you don't get internal routing for a dropper in any of those. I kind of wish they put on a clutch like they did the other bikes in the lineup, but this bike is very impressive and an easy bike to recommend to friends who want to get into the sport.
TAKE MY MONEY SCHWINN! I thought my Schwinn Santis had big tires!
Great video.Very informative. You've rekindled my love for riding. Daimond Back was stolen a while back. Think I'm gonna reinvest. Thanks brother.
5:00 „light crash“ 😂
xD
This is amazing value for money. Totallly worth buying. Change out that derailleur/shifter for a Shimano xt and you’d be in business. Maybe that fork too.
If this was a Specialized, Giant, or DB it would be $700 or more.
derek840378 not diamondback the line is 700 bucks and much better specced than this bike, still a great bike though
And if this was one of those brands, it would come with hydraulic brakes, and quality brand name components. While I am impressed with this Schwinn, I would never expect it to hold up against a real bike.
Specialized, Giant etc would spec Shimano not Axe. So I wouldn't say the Axe is a screaming deal, but it is fairly priced and decent enough of a ride to not put off a newby.
derek840378 because it would have brand name components that are proven to be reliable
I can buy a decent $700 Giant MTB, with shimano alivio components 2x9 with hydraulic brakes and a rockshox XC 30 coil fork tho
Daoumn! Walmart Bikes are getting serious, now! This looks like a real mountainbike and has a nicer paintjob than most! Doesn't even need a huge amount of upgrades to be fun on the trail it seems. I'm intrigued!
When i was a kid i always thought Schwinn was a higher end bike along with Fuji......
They use to be ..the schwinn homegrown...they got bought out 20 years ago or so.
ThistleDewOutdoors hey I have a Fuji Nevada 1.1. I’d consider it a higher end bike
Been wondering if you need any info from the viewers on the interest in this machine.
"Nah... He already has this in his stack, simply waiting to show it"
I was right. It's a first true XC geometry bike from Schwinn. You can spot these differences right away. Nice.
The AXE equipment (derailleur) seems somehow familiar. An older alivio/deore constructions?
I like the idea of "newbie comment" on the builds. Should add little smth, smth to already great content. Keep it up!
Also, I do like how grown-up the Axum looks. Geometry, MTB sized tires, and specs just smacks you into the face with its appeal. Minor changes and it would be no shame mountains ready/
Wait till it goes on rollback, really get a great deal!
Hey Kev thanks for making this vid just in time. I tried to buy the new Boundary but Walmart kept on sending the new AL Comp by accident twice! But after watching this now I want the Axum instead. I'd say it's the most proper MTB hardtail Walmart's ever sold 🚵♂️
This is right in line with the entry level Rockhopper from Specialized. There are a few differences between the two but at $200 less than the Rockhopper I would love to try the Schwinn to see if the price for hydraulic brakes is worth that price increase. Great video and looks like Schwinn could making a hugh come back with this bike.
You can get a decent set of hydraulic brakes for less than $200 from a reputable brand.
Schwinn is on the move it seems. I am liking the direction they are headed. I’m pretty sure your channel has been influential in all this new development. This could be a good bike for upgrades like my Nishiki Colorado 27.5 plus was. I would start with Rock Bro’s. pedals for $20 . Great review by the way.
Wow that bike looks amazing
29ers aren’t my thing but this bike offers a lot for the price. Schwinn is definitely listening and that is great for entry level riders. Thanks for another great review.
Complete newbie comment here. I had to lookup what a dropper post was lol
That said I never thought I would even consider spending $400 on a bicycle but then you show this bike....
At $400 this is a very good price. It has disk breaks, a one by drive train, quick release wheels, tapered headtube and it's a 29! If you are thinking of getting a what I think is a great entry bike this would be it. Plenty of options for upgrades in the future with this Schwinn. Buy it hit the trains and you will never look back!
@@rlangley34 that's what I was looking at the discs, quick release, cassette out back and 29's. I'm a hot rodder, nothing I own remains stock and I don't see bicycles being any different. This looks like a great place to start.
Cheddar702 Marin Bobcat for $400?, where?. Even in Govvelo with the discounts you can’t get a Bobcat at that price maybe with a demo knowing the guys over there. I have two Marins.
Sweet! I just don't see a downside to buying this bike if you're into 29ers, and it looks awesome. Thanks for showing it, Kev.
This looks legit from a distance, probably not that bad for a beginner wanting some XC
Just bought this one. Saw it in stock and jumped on it. Figured tomorrow isnt promised.
Btw. I really hate these handlebars
Not a fan of them either
Walmart Schwinn has my attention.🤔
Awesome perspective from the new guy as well. Nice!
Maybe the next improvements should be : a 1 x 10 sram / shimano groupset , hydraulic brakes and maybe a cheap air fork... may be more expensive but will certainly improve the bike.
You can get a better group set from box. Their Prime Nine nine speed set is about $200 for the group set. It is a 1x9, but with an 11-50 or 11-46 options.
Michael Pitts oh yea forgot about box , they are very underrated in my opinion.
Also Microshift (Taiwan) makes a nice 1x9 groupset.
Have them on my Road & MTB bikes both...
Wish I had seen this when deciding on my first bike. It's hard spending money if you're unsure what you need and have a limited budget. My first bike had manual brakes and I thought I could stop just fine. Bikes have so much profit in them because we "need" that extra feature or weight savings. I can go back to my original mongoose 43lb steel frame mtb and still enjoy it.
I have been looking for a “good project” to start with and this has now made my list grow by one. Hyper hydro, carbon x, XR Pro, now this one... you’re not making this any easier Kev..
I recently saw a Carbon X in person, and was very underwhelmed, if I were you, I might cut that one off the list. As for this Axum, I would move it to the top of your list as it seems very rideable out of the box, plus it has more modularity, not to mention a warranty on the frame. Plus the geometry of this bike is superior to any of the other bikes.
I saw a guy selling a hyper hydro for 700 dollars on my local facebook marketplace 😂😂😂the kev central effect is real 😀
Dylan DualSport I saw one on eBay for $850 or $900😂😂😂. Kev is killing us
Man schwinn is really upping their game. This one might be my favorite if I added riser bars. Good stuff Kev!!
Its a pretty good offer but I feel they should have included hydraulic brakes.
I actually don't mind mechanical disc brakes because of how much easier they are to maintain and replace, I bought a $400 Raleigh and first was disappointed that it only had mechanical disc brakes, But after having to do a full bleed on my mountain bike for hydraulic brakes, I was happy that my other bike would be a clean cable swap, keep in mind for big box stores The target demographic is like college kids and their parents, not necessarily bike mechanics 😫😂
Be realistic... You don't get hydraulic for 400 bucks.. Dream on.
That was a great idea to bring in a new rider to get a better ideas and different perspectives...keep that up kev
