I think if you take not just number of championships but number of different teams and how far apart he won it, and then how different the league was, especially when you look at how different salaries and the number of nationalities, how much he had to adapt… yeah… more than Belichick.

He broke Toe Blake's record for Stanley cups - it was before my time - so that would be the only one who could even be considered . Because of my age I always think of him as Canadiens coach first - but I have heard him say on Canadian TV/radio say that he considers himself Red Wings coach every bit as much as Montreal . I think that is because of the regard he had for Mr Illitch and the core players he had on Detroit - he really loved that team
Mickey - You are an absolute stud as an reporter. Bringing Scotty.B's own story to life in his own words is not easy as there is so much to talk about. We see that Mickey's note book is well used, probably with his shopping list or pointless scribbling. The best interviews ever made are from people like Mickey, who starts the conversation and then falls back into complete silence. Only once during these 21/min does Mickey go back and ask a follow-up question. Mickey always has strong eye contact, confirms when he needs to, which makes this interview a self-played piano from start to finish, what a beauty. As a listener and fan, you are taken on a journey through decades, where you yourself find your own crossroads where your own meeting first occurs on the timeline, what a master piece this really is. Scotty and Micky I loved it the stories were fantastic class acts all the way. I never missed a single wings game for over 25 years, much respect and admiration.
I still remember seeing a picture of Scotty, Craig Patrick and "Badger" Bob Johnson posing when they were signed to the Penguins and I knew it was only a matter of time before the Pens won the Cup, and it was that year that they did it and then the next one too!
Amazing interview. I don't think we could put our finger on one move that made the Wings as GREAT as they were. But for damn sure Scotty Bowman was one of the most important pieces to that puzzle. A new era of greatness is upon us with all the help we have in the front office pushing with that incredible will to win behind them. LGRW.
The single most important move was to hire Jim Devanello as GM. He in turn found and raised up talent, he found the scouts who could find great players, he found other guys who could run an organization, and the coaches who could run his team. That included landing Bowman.
Wow. What great stories and memories. Would love to sit in a dusty old bar like the Lindell AC and just listen to these guys swap stories. I just finished Ken Dryden's book on Scotty, focused on those fantastic World Championship games of the 70s. More than anything, bringing European players into the league has changed the game for the better. More speed, more creativity, more skill......but may less honor, loyalty, toughness and GRIT. Either way, hockey is the greatest sport on earth.

I mean the guy is almost 90 and he sounds like he could step right back in and still coach.

I recommend you check out the book Scotty by Ken Dryden, such a great book about Scotty Bowman and about the history of the NHL.
