I'm on this same road right now. I also did my first drop in at 44. I tried a few times in my early twenties and fell every time. I gave up on it for 20+ years, but I was drawn back to it. Now I drop in frequently and am working my way up to vert. Hearing someone else describe the fear actually helps. Thank you, man.
Mate, fantastic job getting over your fears!! Absolutely awesome seeing you doing all the drops at those various spots, drop by drop you’re looking more lax and confident! Gotta get me some vert time as well! 👊🏻
Jon, you are indeed hardcore! As a 59 yr old skater - after 2 broken legs(mtn bike crashes) and 2 smashed wrists(skateboarding crashes), I have to concede this might be a leap too far me now(but never say never and anything's possible)so well done! Loved your collage of drop ins at the end. Well done and keep the stoke!! Lorenzo from Down Under.
For a skater, Vert...an either do it or regret it situation. Congrats on those accomplishments. Wicked impressed by your drive and vibe to keep pushing yourself. 100% Heart!! That Roskopp is sick by the way!!!
I was smiling with you imagining the celebratory run around the skatepark. I learned to skate recently and the feeling "I've done it, I'm still alive!" was present almost every day doing way way easier stuff. Such a great sport for the mind :)
Inspiring stuff Bish. I've always thought vert skating looked amazing and thought I'd left it too late to learn. Now you're smashing that myth out of the park! Nice one!
I love hearing your story. I started skating a couple years ago at 34, and I've hurt myself really badly doing drop ins on tiny bowls. I want to drop in on vert so bad, but I still chicken out dropping in on four foot bowls that I've done dozens of times before. It just feels like I take one step forward and two steps back over and over until it turns into an insurmountable mental block.
Nice job! I am terrified of it. I can't even stand up there, however I can get pretty high pumping. Sadly we used to have a vert ramp within walking distance to my house but it is no longer there, and the other one that was public access was removed as well. There is no way I am going to learn on a concrete bowl, maybe I need to drive up to Woodward to learn it one summer with my son. I am turning 40 this year so maybe my goal in the next decade is to learn this. haha we will see.
Liked subbed. Man I’m 50 and I skated since I was 15 and now I’ve picked it up after knee surgery 15 year hiatus so I feel you ,an. It’s hard getting back into it. I’m there with ya my bro ..
I really like your videos Jon, i am nowhere near to drop in on vert, yet i enjoy watching this video too. I think you have a uniqe feel to your videos and a great way to explain and teach. Thank you and keep ’em coming!
Your a bad ass my friend. I’ve skated since I was 15 and I’m still scared shitless. I’m 51 now and I’ve been trying to do it . I’m trying to battle this mind game for a while. I’ve done it little by little but I want to drop in so bad. Wish me luck my friend. Congratulations on doing it.
I think Jon's process of fakieing to the coping and doing a little tail tap is a good one. It's basically the same as a dropin, minus the psychological barrier.
I am working up. I rememeber in the 80's standing at the top of Bristol concrete vert ramp and still feel the fear. The highest I have managed is 5ft.since getting back into it a few months ago. I have never dropped in on vert, but there is a vert ramp near me at the same park I did the 5ft. First attempt on thr 5ft I bailed and pulled a muscle in my arse, that was three weeks ago and still sore. I have to keep dropping in on things as much as I can to get super used to it. I have a 10“ board set up coming so maybe that will help me feel secure. I do ride really loose trucks though so for vert will need to tighten them up, also need to ride fakie more. Will book a session and practice just rolling back and forth for an hour and see how that goes. Cheers for the inspiration.
Def consider tighten your trucks a wee bit. I tighten mine a good 1/2 turn before skating fast bowls, bigger drip ins. Lessens the chance of a speed wobble…
Jon, Congrats on dropping in on vert! I like how you show the fails. I'm still trying to do it on a 3ft mini ramp. So far I've only been successful on a 2ft ramp after a few beers.
Rad going Jon. Always fun watching your videos. I live in Newport these days. But I’m a Bristol born skater. I’m getting worse in my old but still hanging in there. Haven’t skated vert in ten years. Maybe it’s time to give it a go again. Ever fancy a trip up to Bath, Bristol, Newport or Cardiff let me know. I’ve a 2ft mini in the garden and crazy kids. Your channel represents what skateboarding is all about fun, learning and progressing for yourself. Keep up the awesome job
Nice work man, great vids and feel your pain for the years of waiting! I was too scared as a kid to even try but managed to drop in twice on the vert at Scarborough recently (only a few inches of vert but I think it counts) at the tender age of 48. Dropping in is, like you say, a binary thing. Do or die. I honestly think you have to actually find a kind of inner peace before you commit- loved the roar!. No excitement and certainly not for a crowd. It’s about accepting that you are going to experience something that feels very unique and embracing the whoosh! Just some thoughts for the conversation- dropping in is one of those unique kind of ‘tricks’ - almost 100% mental.
Excellent mate I was there with you on that drop haha. I'm 62 fairly fit surfed and skate boarded when I was younger. Now got back into surfing and noticed surfskates . So bought a Slide, man they are so much better than the boards we rode in the seventies. Dont know if I want to work myself up to those big drops though! Full respect you got my Sub.
Love this video, and really enjoyed hearing about your progression with this. I've wanted to learn transition/bowl skating since I was a kid (late 70's/early 80's) but only started a couple years ago around age 50! Going through a very similar journey with dropping in at this time.
Finally found the closes Vert Ramp near me, it's a 8 hours car drive. Man those things are going extinct. I think realistically I need to train a lot more on Quater Pipe before I think about going there. But Vert was the reason I started skating again :) Got to check that bucket list before I kick the bucket.
Great balls of fire! Good effort old chap, takes alot of guts to drop in on vert for 1st time! And hope you managed to move your ramp to your new digs. Look forward to watching more vid's :-)
Jon, congrats on conquering the vert drop in! It's been so amazing to see you progress so fast! You're a true, hardcore skater man. Good luck with the move!
Been watching your progress over on Instagram, brilliant stuff! I need to visit my local place soon and actually work up the nerve to drop in on the 7ft quarter there 😎

Dude! So love your videos and you have definitely helped me progress with learning to skate at 50! Finally found a nice wood mini ramp I’ve been learning on. Got my wheels over the coping on my pumps last night for the first times. I want to drop in so bad. I’ve scared myself too with these “spooning out” as you say. I can roll into the mini and have been told Thats actually more difficult but just now getting down pumping fakie and going to try those tail slaps you were doing!
Haha nice one, attempted droppinh in vert 1st time last month at Revs in Bournemouth and am in Blackpool this week at Ramp city trying to get the drop in on the big vert here. Learnt spine transfer, the same week as your vid come out , (safer poping the trucks over and rocking on the coping) was the nugget from the rock fakie video that helped me over the spine. in no doubt this one will have a little nugget to help over the edge of this monster vert. Yeah dude, I think Blackpool is a solid size! It may not be any help, but when I did Mount Hawke (13.5ft) I just used exactly the same technique as I used on Greg’s ramp?

Being an older skater too, starting at 45, your videos have inspired me to try and keep up with you. I'm lagging behind a little though.
@@JonBishopSkate i figured the best way to get better on the ramps was just to keep pumping until i get the confidence to go for it, spending a serious amount of time pumping recently rather then riding the bowl or skating around the park fast :D when i went to that vert ramp in Blackpool if you remember my comment, wish i had the chance to spend a hour pumping on it, but was fairly busy :(
@@JonBishopSkate Dude i managed my first 30 backside slashes today went with the mindset i would do one and they came surprisingly easily , thanks for your videos !!
loved it! some tips about dropping in in surfskate? easier with small wells like 60mm or regular 68 surfskate wells are ok for dropping in? thank you so much
Interesting...I've found that I get MORE pump out of an axle drop than a tail drop. The little pivot starts me coming in with more momentum than a taildrop does.
Awesome mate! I loved that tail tap encouraged by coach. I know a guy who could pump and slash grind vert but couldn’t drop in. He worked up to drop in by doing baby tail stalls from pumping fakie. Ps your drop in looks very smooth, do you stomp the nose down hard or more fall n lean fwd into the drop?
Hey Dude Many thanks for tuning in! I feels like I just do my standard drop in technique? It does seem to work better if I can get low and stay low, it’s all over so fast I’m not sure what happens 😂
Nice Job! Congrats! I have thought many times about giving a go to verts but always thought It was not worth the risk/reward. What do you think now that you have done it?
Yeah dude, I recon the rewards are high as I now feel I have access to skating any bowl/ramp out there? Also that pumping up from the bottom is tiring so having all the speed for free is an upgrade. I can totally see where you are coming from on the risk. but I found that element was mostly psychological, the reality is if you can drop in confidentiality on a 6ft ramp you’ll do it I recon? but it’s getting the mind to a point where you finally commit to it that is the struggle ?? I came off in the early stages, but it wasn’t too bad, admittedly I’ve got all the big vert pads on which I’d recommend having on for the first few tries at least 😂
Does anyone else keep their hand on the nose when doing bigger drop ins? I hold the nose and push the board out of my hand to ensure I don’t loop out. I haven’t dropped into a proper vert ramp, maybe a 9’ ramp with a foot of vert...
