    As a beekeeper since 1985 I would like to comment on the purity of wax. My concern would be that for many years now, since the introduction of varroa mites into North America beekeepers have been using Coumaphos as an in hive miticide. It is allowed because it is not water soluble and therefor does not contaminate the honey. It is however fat (wax) soluble. My suggestion is that before using beeswax in any food grade situation, know your beekeeper and be sure that they are not using this chemical. Buy wax locally. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coumaphos

  • @googlesbitch
    @googlesbitch 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    The raw bees wax is considered slumgum grade wax that has all the old comb and bee waste film left on them. They are considered by bee keepers as lower grade wax because of the larger amounts of bee waste in it. Honey comb capping is where the higher grade bee's wax comes from since it's all new and clean and never crossed with old brood comb.

      Jacob I have just been introduced to French Polishing. Is there a particular page or resource I can look up to gain more understanding of the process'. Since this is your expertise I would love to know more. Someone briefly told me to look up Linseed Oil and Beeswax on youtube but it seems to be soo many variations. Even a book for reference would be awesome. I am in Australia and just finding my love of timber and traditional practices of restoring, creating and finishing wood projects. So new to it I am still making shop furniture for my tools so still have time to learn and grow.

    More rinsing, less water = more "pure" solvent layer. Going 2 or 3 rinses will yield a final product with less water-soluble contaminants... If that's what the overall plan is. See Zubrick chapter on Washing and extraction.

    I don't understand why people use baking pans to cool the wax product. It seems like it would be more efficient to use something that's a bit taller that tapers down to a cone at the bottom of possible. That way if there's impurities left in the wax it will concentrate in one place and be much easier to remove in one single slice.

    Can some one help me? I got some honeycombs, and after extracting the basic honey, started to try and separate the wax from half of it. the problem is i'm new at this, so a didn't knew i had do "wash" the honey before melt to filter, so the liquid honey kinda blended into the wax. the result is a brown wax with some sour smell of fermented honey in it, no matter how much i filter it. I already did the trick with boiling water 5 times, than moved to run the melted wax through some thick fabric... but nothing separates it.
    the other half i did wash, put it in some cheese cloth and let in the tap for some time. the result is a beautiful yellow wax.
    how can i save the brown half?
    (my english is not perfect yet, I apologise for any grammar and misspelling)

    • @grahamburford6450
      @grahamburford6450 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tio Clotildo The honey (which is basically sugars and water) should dissolve in the water and not in the wax. Heating wax above 75 C will discolour the wax and darken it. I have seen dark brown wax from overheating. Also the water should be rain water and not hard water as the calcium salts will affect the wax. Finally never use copper utensils only stainless steel. The copper will discolor wax. Actually many people like the wax to have a honey smell - but sour honey? Has the honey fermented?

    • @shamrock4500
      @shamrock4500 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      just follow this video, throw your filters and all in the pot of boiling water once you have it melted, remove the filters and let it set until hard, then do this all again, but this time use a filter scrape off the brown stuff when hard.

      First, make sure your wax is hot enough. If it's only just above the melt point, it will cool enough in the filter to clog it. Second, try "shortening filters" from either a restaurant supply or Amazon.

He has developed, managed, and presented educational programming on an array of subjects in the fields of conservation, woodworking, and wood finishing, and has published and presented scholarly research on subjects like ancient coating materials and craft techniques, and created pioneering uses for traditional and modern materials, including some of his own invention.
      In his spare time he passionately pursues varied interests, including economics, metal casting, collecting obscure books and tools, Japanese gardening, and faith, all of which usually occur against a backdrop of either jazz or podcast lectures on various arcane topics. He and his wife have two brilliant and charming daughters who lovingly accept that their eccentric Dad has dozens of different kinds of shellac in the basement, which will soon have a place of honor in his restored vintage timber framed barn alongside their cabin retreat in the mountains of rural Virginia. »
