i picked up the guitar just yesterday and this is the first chord im learning because its the first one in the song i want to learn, little did i know it would he SO hard, i was struggling so bad until i found this, i was doing everything you said not to do LOL, this video felt like a revelation thank you soooo much 😭😭😭😭
I was a pro player from 1958 to 1992. The advise this man gave is GOLD. Forget playing licks, riffs, and pieces of solos from recorded songs until you can play a clean C chord. You are wasting your time and energy.
I’ve struggled for ages with the c chord. Getting my fingers on at the same time has plagued me for ages, only trying the reverse finger placing method I can already feel that helping. Hopefully in a couple weeks I’ll be able to put my fingers down at once 😅
thankyou so much!!!!!!!!! I thought because I'm small my fingers won't reach the strings properly but then I searched for finger placement video and I'm glad I got this video thank you soooo muchhhhhh.
thank you!! my goal is to mute the 6th string while playing C major (and other chords too), so hoping that with practice I will be able to stretch my thumb so it can touch the 6th string, I feel like my hands are too small lol but apparently everyone feels that way. either stretch thumb, or try to mute the 6th using the 3rd finger... both are too hard for me at this stage but hopefully will get better with more practice
The C is next to impossible! I literally have practiced this everyday for the last 40-50 days everyday. I have tried every tip possible over and over again. I have tried my elbow digging into my side even brought across to my belly button nothing works. I can play it clean with my 3rd and forth finger the second I try to move my index finger to the 2nd string first fret it all goes to hell.
I am 61 years old and I realize that after stretching on 5th to 8th (slow spider walking) 2 minutes every day frets C chord and G chord goes very well.
ok so i was really struggling with this chord while watching this video, and I couldn't figure out why, even though I was following all the tips. Then I realized that the one finger that was getting a clear sound was the one with the shortest nail. Trimmed all my nails down as short as they will go, and now the chord feels so easy to play and sounds much better. TRIM YOUR NAILS
Hey there! Thank you for the lesson - tips, tricks and avoiding pitfalls. I am brand new (less than a month,) learning for personal reasons (no ambition to be a performer,) to challenge, stretch and work on the health of my brain. I have been attempting the C cord for several days and it sounds nothing like the "true" sound. I have my tuner so as to learn when I get it right, but I've been attempting for just about a week. I keep practicing the fingering, ensuring I am avoiding those beginner mistakes and such, but I'm feeling defeated as I'm not sounding any closer to the "C" as I was on day one. Most often times, when I strum (thumb, not pick,) with the fingering, the tuner picks up a "D." I haven't yet mastered placing all three on at once, but I'm at a loss as to how to move forward if I am doing all that I can, but have not yet mastered the 'C' chord. Does anyone with any experience have any suggestions?
Im having a problem of muting the low E,G and the high e strings because of my small fingers. But this video really helps me but I still mastering it and the changing of chords
I was hoping for tips on the slightly more complicated C-shaped chord that can move down the neck. The moveable shape you showed in this video is the one I'm talking about. My fingers hate it.
Soooo, I’m an only child and my dad has worked for Fender for 26 years now, therefore I have a ridiculous amount of guitars for someone who doesn’t play. He plays quite a bit but was never taught “correctly” as he says, since he just learned from watching a friend play in his 20s. There’s been so many times he’s tried to teach me to play but every time I get to the C cord I struggle and I mean I struggle bad. I have tiny hands and fingers and it’s just so damn hard for me, I’ve given up every time because of it. I’ve been practicing again since being home for COVID using the Fender Play app but that C cord got me again and they don’t really go in-depth about it on the app. Well I finally pushed through the frustration and I can now play a C with confidence. Your video was the BIGGGGGEST help out of all the videos I watched so thank you! Gonna surprise my dad soon and show him I finally learned and now we can jam together! Just thought I’d let you know even though this video is 2 years old. Hopefully you see it or someone else with a similar issue comes across my comment and pushes through cause it really did help me! Thanks again!!
Ahhh it’s hard for people like me with short fingers. Need a skinnier neck so I can separate my fingers. And my electric guitar kinda have a hard action so fingers hurt like crazy.
My dream was to always play guitar like some others here. I'm 59, and I struggle with the C. I weren't blessed with my mums long slender fingers but I'm trying.
Elbow in!!! Don't play the low "E". And multiple short playing sessions daily rather than 1 long one (kind of difficult while working FT, but will try it...weekends definitely!) Thank you!

My phone changed ADVICE to ADVISE. After you get clean open chords, I suggest working on Bar chords. Best advice my teacher ever gave me 60 years ago.

This was the one that frustrated me the most lol

Listen to this man. I've been playing for 30+ years and what he's telling you is absolutely true.
Im having a problem of muting the low E,G and the high e strings because of my small fingers.

There is some tip for small fingers??
Nice sir ..sir please guide me I have difficulty to change chords quickly

Who’s here from Nothing Else Matters C-A-D LOL
Aaahh.. yes the 123,321 trick sounds good.
I needed to know this. Thank you.
for every beginner that can't do keys like this for long because of pain, try liquid callus
How do you avoid wrist strain and fingers touching adjacent strings?
Putting the thumb on the middle of the neck rather than side by the E makes your fingers arch higher so you won’t mute other strings
Any tips for short stubby fingers? I have a taylor academy a10e as my first guitar at 58
What is the best way to hold the pick?
i've been playing guitar for about a week and the c chord is the first thing i've properly struggled on so far, these tips really helped, thank you!
Ahhh it’s hard for people like me with short fingers. Need a skinnier neck so I can separate my fingers. And my electric guitar kinda have a hard action so fingers hurt like crazy.
I am having the same problem ughhh my ring finger just refuses to separate far enough 😩
My dream was to always play guitar like some others here. I'm 59, and I struggle with the C. I weren't blessed with my mums long slender fingers but I'm trying.
Practice practice practice

The thing that helped me is just doing it over and over I try to do it 1,800 times cause if you do anything 1,800 it becomes muscle memory
