Awesome! As a 40 something now who grew up and is still drug free I credit so much of my identity to my formative years growing up reading Earth Crisis lyrics on the bus to school i jr. high. My introduction to radical politics was from hardcore and punk music. Even though I think the Firestorm approach to drugs and drug use is rather childish and undeveloped, especially when EC's height was during the age of mass incarceration and the bullshit War on Drugs, I am so grateful for the positive sense of community and encouragement to live a drug free life that HC gave. I'm about at 22 years vegan but never claimed straight edge not bc I'm on drugs but more so I feel I don't need to claim anything and I'm not opposed to a lot of things such as natural psychedelics. I've seen them do more good than bad with people. I have a great appreciation for the people that stick with their claim. Here in NOLa, there's only about 4 people from our era of straight edge that stayed true.
Sugar, refined carbs, lots of calories, and alcohol, probably. But these guys are doing it for ethical reasons, not health reasons from what I know. Great to see. Veganism makes so much sense for hardcore/metal bands, as there's so much suffering involved in animal farming, that it would create a lot of passion to sing about.
