    I get that not every place had a wall or palisade, but why the hell would you build a redoubt or keep in the center and then leave it open? No gates. no barricade you can close, wide open and usually they give you a garrison that's too small to even cover the openings.

    I've been defending the total war people for a while, and have always wanted a viking game, but I feel like they're just being lazy as shit and releasing the same game with an overhauled setting.This should definitely be an expansion for Attila.
    I think they should make a new engine.
    Edit: I know there are a lot of things that are improved, but I can't help but feel like a modder could make this if they had more freedom.

    • @sb17899
      @sb17899 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      it is an expansion. pretty much. stand alone which is better for people who don't want to buy attila. and if you think a 40 dollar expansion is too much, just look at xcom.

    • @Jharug87
      @Jharug87 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      For that price they are not asking to much and at least for me i was never nor will i ever be interested in buying Attila. I can't point out any one thing i don't like about Attila but it just does not speak to me. This do however and i would probably never buy this if i had to buy Attila first.

    • @Dejawolfs
      @Dejawolfs 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      to be fair, most of the changes to TOB is in how the campaign map works. battles might be just attila clones, but the troop system gives the game a completely different feel.
      instead of just tossing soldiers at the enemy, you suddenly have to conserve your troops, at least in the early to mid-game.
      late game is mostly the same autoresolvefest tho.

    I have always thought it would be cool if the developers allowed you to create your own faction from scratch. You could create units and uniforms, pick religion and culture. Stuff like that. Then u could use your faction in online battles.

    looks ok, but i got burned so hard by Rome 2 when it came out i will wait at least 1 year for the price to drop, the bugs to be fixed and the first 100 DLC's to be included .
    I hoped for something that was qualitywise as good as the Britania expansion Medieval 2 but with all the things learned about gamemaking till 2018.
    Frankly this looks like a Britain centered mod down to a point where some of the new units are working weird, like that disappearing ram.

      @P.Sinnet It's a computer game and thus fiction. Nothing here is historically accurate, but it doesn't have to! It's supposed to be fun and cater for our need to picture the past in an interactive and visually compelling way. And that I feel it does amazingly! :)

    I never understood armor piercing crossbows in games like these. Crossbows only reached the power of a war bow in the 14th and 15th centuries.

    • @breaden4381
      @breaden4381 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s in literally every game that has crossbows. It makes sense for gameplay kind of, but I still don’t like it.

    • @muigetsu13
      @muigetsu13 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      the fact is the long bow has reached the power before the 14 it's just the weapons were only used in wales so it's a local weapon that why the english make so much time to control the walesr...
      we all know it in 14 and 15 cause of the utilisation of this weapon during the french war and withou that the rosbif will be easily dompted in battlefield ;) so yes the long bow was used before the 14th. and maybe if you read the description of units in the game u will see that we have founded some archer tombs from this time !!

    The Galoglass were Viking mercenaries in Ireland so it wouldn’t be unusual for them to use Dane axes considering grate swords were not being used commonly at this point.

  • @elektrotehnik94
    @elektrotehnik94 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The siege mechanisms are superb, it's the combat that worries me. It seems that units are just cosmetically different for the most part, 1 on 1 combat mechanics do not seem to even match Rome 2 sparring in this video... Those crossbows, with their cost and effectiveness, seem to be too strong?
    Would like to see some more sieges, this map def. needed more soldiers in the battles (y) great video none the less

    • @Comintern1919
      @Comintern1919 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, 1 on 1 combat isn't really how fighting was done in that era, though. A lot of 1 on 1 combat would look neat, but would be very unrealistic, and in my opinion, TW is already quite unrealistic, so I don't mind it.
      Doesn't mean though that the animation doesn't look bad, or that I think they def. should improve it.

    • @kebman
      @kebman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      No, they didn't, and they didn't look like that at all. Also only the vikings had actual longboats. They were sleek little things without the trireme decks shown in this clip. The rowers were the soldiers, and they sat right next to the shield wall. When they were done rowing, they'd raise up and strum their bows.

    • @Vorplassassin
      @Vorplassassin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you are right that the ships are too big, but you are forgetting about the Busse. If you didn't know the Busse was a large ship used to ferry large amounts of men and cargo, and was used to gain an upper hand in naval combat, due to its large crew size, but you are also right about the rowers being the fighting crew, even on a Busse this is still how the ships were run. but the size of the ships in game are on average too big. a Busse could only hold 70-90 men.

    • @kebman
      @kebman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Busse were rare and served mostly as flagships for royalty. Also they appeared only later in the viking age. “Ormen lange” is a great example. The Skeid were much more common, and they could hold up to 100 men of the _lething._ But most importantly, they didn't have a _deck,_ like depicted in the game. The rowers sat right next to the “ripr”, or gunwale of the ship. Putting a deck on the ship is just a very lazy omission of the game designers.

  • @araposkulo
    @araposkulo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Those islands could are a wasted opportunity as impassable terrain. You could make a Salamis/Thermopylae type of battle there. You block the attacking ships and while placing artillery or ranged units on the island. This way you force your opponent to use some of his ships to engage you land units and waste their manpower and/or ammunition.
    Also general dueling area would have been awesome

  • @doenjangguk

    Come to think of it (I don’t have Thrones btw), the city layout reminds me of Shogun 2 Total War’s castles..
    Also one of the many things that threw me out of immersion was in Rome II when I have costal naval battles - I have ships sink within swimming distance of shore and all the soldiers drown. Not to mention the water wouldn’t be deep enough to engulf the entire ship in water. It would also be nice to have a mechanic where a portion of soldiers that are near the shore can swim onto land to continue fighting with morale, fatigue, and ammunition penalties. I know some soldiers that are heavily armored might drown but units that lack armor such as levies should be able to swim..and while I’m writing this I suddenly remembered in Rome Total War Barbarian Invasion units could swim in rivers..ah good times..

    Irish Lad here, 'Dun Patraic' = Fort of Patrick. It's pronounced "Done Patrick." A dun is an ancient or medieval fort. ... The term comes from Irish dún or Scottish Gaelic dùn (meaning "fort"), and is cognate with Old Welsh din (whence Welsh dinas "city" comes).

      you should play more of some rome2, attila and warhammer(s) then. Being honest I really can't say for sure till I actually play this game, but I still suspect that they are testing out some new game mechanisms in Thrones of Britannia, which they will put in use in Three Kingdoms.

    • @MasterEsben18
      @MasterEsben18 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you havent played Attila or Rome II, your argument is invalid AF. Attila was a reskin of Rome II and this is a reskin of Attila.

      Also, regarding your list of "improvements", those are ALL things that we had in previous titles. Should we be grateful they implemented 360 battles? All previous historical titles had them, battle mechanics you say? That is simply a lie. There is ZERO, and I say, ZERO unit collision in this game, (as its essentially the same as Attila and RWII), ZERO unit weigths and mass. Rome 1 (from 2004!) had WAAAAY better unit collision and mass than this sh*t. The UI doesnt look bad, but it doesnt look "vikingy" at all, totally out of touch with the theme.
      Campaign improvements? Ive heard in multiple previews that the supposed "strong narrative" is in fact, weak and random.
      If they REALLY wanted to improve the campaign, they should allow the vikings to sail up the rivers, and have river battles, but that is way too much work for CA.
      Im only saying this because I LOVE Total War, I have been a fan since the first rome, but seeing the way this franchise is heading, they have to ALOT more work to impress me.
      This doesnt impress me AT ALL, neither did Rome II/Attila.

    The boats are way too large. And the tiger-jumps the warriors are making are ridiculous. While ramming would occur, it wasn't commonplace. Naval viking armies would tie their boats together to create a floating fortress, and then barrage enemies with arrows, rocks and whatever else they could throw until they came close enough to board them. Otherwise the game is accurate in that boarding plays a _huge_ part of viking/ancient European warfare.

    • @akshaykumarjha9136
      @akshaykumarjha9136 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      kebman really I wanted Rome to focus on the Ceaser time period more. There was the Gallic campaign and then 2nd triumvirate campaign. I wanted a sort of 'Caesar in Italy' campaign.
      Maybe give Phatsallus in historic battle.

    Kinda disappointed that a wrecked ram doesn't just block the chokepoint until the debris is cleared by hand. That would make the handling of siege engines much more interesting, for both sides.
    Still not sure what people were expecting, though, looking at a lot of the complaints about battle animations or "it's just Attila" comments. The only thing missing is random complaints about "SJWs" somehow ruining it.

    the ships look stupid being that size... just reduce the size of the ship and the number of men on them... historically the armies fielded at this time were usually not huge anyways.

    CA must really get their priorities in place now. It is clear that there is favorism over those who do not criticize the game. Legend is bringing constructive criticism to the game and issues that they are neglecting. In addition to that, it shows very bad judgment power of CA by blacklisting him when he requested guidelines and information in regards of the NDA case.
    The company is in a situation where they neglect critical and constructive criticism that the player's has given them over a long period of time. With this current speed here, they are going to tense their legs on themselves. I love the series, however this is going too far.

    Have a nice day.
