Ever since I switched from 500 - 1000 word articles to 1500 - 3000 word articled, taking a week for each one, every single article I am now writung is at the #1 or a few at #2 spot. They all get between 2500 - 28, 000 monthly page views. They are making 2-3 more compared to my short articles. So for me, writing 1 weekly long article is working better than 4-5 500 word articles.

The same stuff applies; it's no different. And being in the same niche for a guest post can make links more relevant but it isn't always necessary.

I would find another "shoulder niche" or expand to another related subniche. You don't want to pigeonhole yourself.
