On and off over the years, I've tried to decide between these two. In the most simplistic terms, I find Johnnie Walker has more character, but a little more harsh. Chivas is a little sweeter, easy-going, a little smoother, less harsh..... I prefer Chivas!

Chivas is definitely smoother and a bit sweet. When I want to relax and enjoy a drink I go for the chivas

I believe the JWBL was designed to be drunk with some ice and it really shows. The Chivas Regal is an all rounder. Drunk straight, I tend to agree that the Regal has a fruitier taste. In comparrison, the Black label gives a slightly bitter burn corn grain spirit note, not particularly pleasent? Adding water however changes things dramatically. The Black Label shows far more complexity and range of tastes. The Chivas simply falls apart when water is added. The Black Label with ice really brings out the best of this. Sweet charred Smoke, fruity and as you say, salted toffee,. If I was at a party and walking around I'd have the Chivas. If I was sitting at a party and ice was available it would be the Black Label.

Hi Reb! I'll have to try JWBL with ice against Chivas with ice! I'll do some experiments at home!:D

BTW, have you heard the advert for the JW Double Black? (I hear it on the Whisky Cask podcast).
It is something like "Double Black...new...pushing the bounderies just like our master blenders have done for hundreds of years...."
Isn't that just brilliant marketing? I am so impressed.
In one statement you get the message "this is something new and exciting" and at the same time "This comes with history and Scottish tradition....". Absolutely brilliant!

Facts bro I tried the black label for the first time without ice. And isn't like it then added a lil ice and loved it.

@@joeyjuandiaz6195 I recently had the same experience with Jameson's Irish. I was sitting at an outdoor Shabbos Shul kuddush after davenin, under some olive trees here in Jerusalem, and the gabei brought out a bottle of Jameson's Irish straight from the freezer!!! It was delicious. Sweeet, cereals, creamy vanity cakes, apples...I was embarrassed by how much I enjoyed this cheap blend. The next Shabbos, they had left it out of the fridge and I drank it at near room temperature (I added some cold water). It was bitter vanilla, spirit harsh with a saccharin aftertaste. Yuck.

  • @reptilianskin

I always keep both these bottles stocked in my cabinet. Both are very enjoyable for me. My palate is not as sophisticated where I can pick up distinct fruit in whisky. I do pick up tastes like caramel, vanilla, chocolate, toffee, sugar, peat, smoky, spice, etc. For that reason, I tend to enjoy Black Label a bit more because the smoke is distinctive on my palate. However, there are times when I just want the lighter easy going Chivas.

I have both bottles at home and you can't go wrong with either choice. The Johnnie Walker Black is good if you want a smoother darker bitter taste, while the Chivas is definitely more subtle, is lighter, and has a fruit taste. No one complains, so, it's whatever you are in the mood for. What bothers me is that Johnnie Walker Red's flavor profile has changed in the last three or four decades and it's much harsher, while the Chivas Regal older aged offerings are much more expensive. What can you do, things change over time.

Hi Joe, I've been a single malt fan since a trip to Edinburgh in the early 1980's. My first taste was at The Ensign Ewart, a pub on The Royal Mile next to the castle. When I asked for a recommendation for a good whisky, I received about 5 simultaneous replies, all different. Two whiskies, each extremely different in its own way stood out-Isle of Jura 10 year old, and Laphroig. Although extreme opposites, I enjoy each for its unique flavor experience to this day. In your comparison of JWB & Chivas, I see that you expressed a preference for the light, floral notes of the
Chivas, and I tend to feel the same way about Scotch Whisky in general.

Hi johnny guitar thank you very much for watching and leaving a comment! That's the beauty of whisky, everyone will have different preferences and recommend different styles! Also that's another great thing about whisky! You'll never get bored of it because there are just so many different styles! Yeah, I'm on a big Speyside hype at the moment and am enjoying the more summery styles of whisky! :)

***** Hi mate! Thanks again for commenting! I love the interaction I get on these videos! It's what I enjoy most! Yeah, I completely agree with you that Bourbon and Canadian whisky have a much narrower flavour profile. It's because they all have to use brand new American oak so you're always going to get a limited flavour profile. If you've never had Laphroaig I'd highly recommend trying some!!! :) Ardmore is a great shout too!

    Hello mate!
For an unbiased thorough tasting test you need to eat a slice of apple followed by a slice of gouda and then a glass of water to "reset" the tasting buds.
Nevertheless, i trust your reviews and i went with Chivas too.
Even diluted, Johnnie is too "raw" for me.
    Cheers!

Johnny Walker is great but it tends to mess me up more in the hangover than Chivas. Don't know why?
Chivas takes a little getting used to. At first I didn't like it much I preferred Johnny Walker. Now that I appreciate whiskeys more somehow I've changed perspectives. At a friend's bar once he ran out of Johnny Walker Black Label so I asked him for Chivas 12 on ice and wow I couldn't believe it.
I think the twelve is ment to be their starter whiskey for cocktails or casual drinking. Compared to Johnny Walker Red Label it's far better and does compete with Black Label even though it's cheaper somehow?

I know I seldom if ever DRINK the damn stuff, I just like to smell, that is the most important thing. I'm glad your actions and your nose agree. At parties, no one ever gets drunk anymore, we just sit around and smell the stuff. I wonder if your nose will one day develop a bad case of Scotch cancer. Your nose will be in my prayers, not your taste buds, they seem to hardly come into contact with the stuff.
