  • The 10 of March, the Portuguese will go to the polls. What will this mean for Portugal and the EU just a few months before the European elections?
With Prime Minister António Costa at the helm for eight years, Portugal has been a stable pillar of European politics. "Under Costa, Portugal has become a European success story," The Economist proclaimed last year of the Socialist Party government, which has ruled the country with an absolute majority since January 2022.
But on 7 November 2023, Costa suddenly resigned following corruption charges, and new winds are now blowing across Portuguese politics.
Ahead of new elections on 10 March 2024, the Socialist Party is facing a significant decline in the polls. Meanwhile, the far-right Chega ("Enough!") party is set to jump from 7 to 19 per cent of the vote, while Luís Montenegro, leader of the Socialist Party, refuses to enter into an alliance with Chega, whose leader he accuses of spreading "racist" and "demagogic" views.
Where is Portugal heading? And what does it mean for the EU and European politics just months before the European Parliament elections in June?
Miguel Morgado - Professor of Political Science at the Catolica Instituto de Estudos Politicos and former parliamentarian and advisor to the Prime Minister - outlines the election's perspectives in this webinar.
