    • @whj830
      @whj830 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's true that we're ruled by spineless politicians who can send people off to die en masse to solve conflicts which can have really petty origins, and I used to think similarly, until it was explained to me that war would be entirely useless if fought like that, and that literally random people have to die for it to mean anything. Since wars are most often fought over real disputes like, "you have x and we need x so we will take x from you" or conversely, "we have x and we aren't willing to provide you with that much x so if you want more you have to take it from our dead hands," among many other situations. So if we were like, war sucks lets have the guys at the top fight an MMA match, we would have to agree that that would be the end of the dispute. But since no one really paid any price (no one was invaded, no one died, no one sacrificed) the dispute is unsettled. Both parties are in their starting positions and can still say, "oh yeah well how about this" and then make it a real war. Severe, devastating loss usually has to occur to get one side to capitulate to the other, unfortunately. If you could agree to settle your problems with a game, you aren't really at risk in the first place.

      US congress critters used to fight in session, with walking sticks and canes. Quit happening sometime around the end of Reconstruction. Congressmen used to carry bowie knives and pistols to work. Back in the late 1790's, a rather violent fight broke out over a congressman spitting tobacco juice into another's eye.
      I'm glad to see the tradition returning. Way better to have politicians fight each other, than beating the taxpayers every waking moment like usual.

    As mentioned before washington state and texas are the only two states that have mutual combat laws. If you agree to mutual combat in that state you can legally fight each other with some restrictions of course and I think maybe a witness. Ever since my dad learned about it, he has challenged people to mutual combat, no one has yet to accept his offer. We live in washington.

    • @johnnoreau3570

      NYS has mutual combat as well. When I got choked out by a black man the cops told me it was mutual combat because I approached him
      The dude was my boss and asked me to come over to where he was. So it’s my fault according to the police.
      When I went to see what he wanted he shoved me in a cooler with no camera. Slammed three times then squeezed my neck so hard his hand print was on my throat
      After reviewing the cameras. Cops said I willingly engaged and because I was in the cooler longer than him
      I was choking myself to frame him because women break their bones to frame men in domestic disputes. The worst police encounter I’ve ever had. Got assaulted at work and told it’s my fault we’re not doing anything.

That way it’s not a spectacle or halting the flow of the meeting; and it doesn’t turn the meeting hall into a place of violence, but of decision-making. I’d also like to see the challenger’s face when everyone lets them actually fight, because he issued the challenge in one of the only places that was guaranteed to keep it from happening.

    The one and only time congressional members have reportedly had physical altercation in a government building was in 1856. It’d have been interesting to see one live!
    Context (from wiki): The caning of Charles Sumner, or the Brooks-Sumner Affair, occurred on May 22, 1856, in the United States Senate chamber, when Representative Preston Brooks, a pro-slavery Democrat from South Carolina, used a walking cane to attack Senator Charles Sumner, an abolitionist Republican from Massachusetts. The attack was in retaliation for an invective-laden speech given by Sumner two days earlier in which he fiercely criticized slaveholders, including pro-slavery South Carolina Senator Andrew Butler, a relative of Brooks. The beating nearly killed Sumner and contributed significantly to the country's polarization over the issue of slavery.
