  • Since i got the new GH-PRO II geared head from Sunwayfoto, i wanted to make a small overview of my geared heads i use.
    The new design seems great, for a first impression it's pretty sturdy and well thought. It's quite bigger than the previous model but also more stiff which is good for heavier gear.
    I'm owning the GH-PRO since a little more than one year and i'm still fully satisfied, but i wanted to get another geared head for my travel tripod.
    I've also bought the Benro GD3WH on the cheap from a chinese ebay seller. But it fits not very good other arca compatible plates than the orginal Benro ones... and it's quite big for travel. But it works pretty fine and is a less expensive option.

    Have been using the GH-PRO II for a while now. I used to shoot with a BH55 ballhead (RRS). The geared head is fantastic in the way you can adjust horizontal and vertical movements. I have only one issue with it: stability. I feel like the GH-PRO II is not sturdy enough to hold a D850 with a 24-70 f2.8 or 70-200 f4 lens. As soon there is a bit of breeze, I need to up my ISO. I'm kind of disappointed by that. As a result I'm look for another solution.

      @@whateutube Yes, I'm using the VH-30R head from Leofoto. This is not a geared head but the horizontal and vertical adjustments are still independent from each other. Highly recommend this head, works great! I have coupled it with a Leofoto tripod with a build in leveling base LS-324CEX. Highly recommend as well. It lets you level the head in a breeze. Great for panoramas too.

    I’m really intrigued by the “gross” adjustments on the GH-Pro II since they don’t disengage the gear drive like the other heads mechanisms do.
    I started with a Manfrotto 405 but had to get it serviced and picks up a Benro to tide me over. The Benro became my go-to with a panning clamp added to the top.
    I’m now eyeing the Leofoto G4 or Rogeti geared heads as my next move but this one might be added to my lineup as well.

      Hi Paul, that's the now discontinued Sunwayfoto GH-PRO 2019 version. If you wish to aquire this kind of Arca Swiss D4 inspired head, you can look up for a Leofoto G4 (which i didn't had the chance to test, but i'm owning a Leofoto G2 that is pretty good)

    I read that when you're composing your shot (real estate photography), that when you adjust the lever at the base to tighten it does not stay where you put it, it moves very slightly. Is this true?

    • @m4tik
      @m4tik  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, my version do not move when locked down. This head is pretty stiff. Maybe they have manufacturing variations in their samples, i can't tell, i am happy so far. But still the locking mechanism is not very firm, so it can get loose when you touch it slightly.

    Thanks for the comparison. I've been using a manfrotto 405 for year but it's massive and very top heavy. I've had the GH-Pro II on order for a few months now but with corona shipping is taking a while (it's making progress but slowly). I'm excited to compare the two once mine arrives.

      i would definitly go for the PRO II. It's much more sturdy.
      Do you need the precision ? With such a lens i would rather opt for a Gimbal Head :)

      the Benro is sturdy and works fine, i wouldn't recomand the GH Pro I over the Benro. But the GH Pro II would be a fine replacement if you workload isn't over 3kg imo

      @@QingyuLin the GH Pro had a little play in the gears after 2 years of using, it might be the wear. It's not dramatic but the GH Pro II seems more solid after the same timespan of use.. if ever you search for this kind of form factor like the GH Pro I, Leofoto G4 might be a better option.

    Hello. Je projète d'acheter la GH-PRO 1, car je shoote (en plus de mon matos pro classique) à la chambre (4x5) dont le poids est de 4,5Kg. J'ai hésité avec la GH-PRO 2 mais j'ai vu qu'elle n'accepte que 4Kg. J'ai actuellement une Manfrotto 405 junior, mais beaucoup trop lourde et dont le plateau est peu pratique. T'en es pleinement satisfait ? Après 2 ans ? La 2 est-elle mieux ? Et comparé avec la Benro ? Merci d'avance (sorry pour le roman)

    • @m4tik
      @m4tik  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bonjour Pierre,
      je suis satisfait de la GH Pro II, bien plus que la I, qui au final possède un mécanisme un peu trop souple et globalement n'est pas aussi rigide. La GH-Pro II ne bouge pas et demeure un peu plus précise du coup et c'est celle ci que j'utilise le plus. Perso je ne mettrais pas une chambre de 4.5kg sur la I...
      Il y a aussi une nouvelle révision de la GH Pro II qui est sortie en 2020, en deux versions, une avec un étau panoramique classique et une avec ce étau réglable. Le tout un peu plus léger.
      Si tu cherches sur TH-cam, le photographe Ian Worth a fait une mini review de cette révision de rotule et il semble utiliser une chambre en 4x5, je tenterais peut être de lui poser la question sur youtube.
      J'ai vu par contre d'autres marques qui font des têtes comme la GH Pro I si ce design te plait, celle que j'ai considéré est la Leofoto G4. Au final je ne l'ai pas testé car j'ai acheté leur tête Leofoto G2, avec un base de nivèlement, qui pourrait peut être plus t’intéresser pour ta chambre d'ailleurs.
      Si tu souhaites laisse moi un contact en pv je peux t'envoyer quelques photos. Après pour la Benro, rien a dire c'est du costaud mais un peu moins élégant :D En gros j'utilise avec mes TSE sur mon grand trépied archi la GH Pro II et sur mon pied compact de voyage la Leofoto G2 avec une base de nivèlement LB60, achetés sur ebay chez un revendeur US.

    • @m4tik

      The second version seems sturdier but a little less compact, but in real use it may be not significant. Also the construction is even better, the feel is great, the knobs and overall use is still quite stiff, which is good for heavier lenses. For the price it seems, after my first use, to be an excellent deal !
